Ant algorithm is new meta heuristic for hard combinatorial optimization problem. It is a population based approach that uses exploitation of positive feedback as well as greedy search. It was first proposed for tackling the well known Traveling Salesman Problem. In this paper, we propose the improved $AS_{rank}$ algorithms. The original $AS_{rank}$ algorithm accomplishes a pheromone updating about only the paths which will be composed of the optimal path is higher, but, the paths which will be composed the optimal path is lower does not considered. In this paper, The proposed method evaporate the pheromone of the paths which will be composed of the optimal path is lowest(worst tour path), it is reducing the probability of the edges selection during next search cycle. Simulation results of proposed method show lower average search time and average iteration than original ACS.

The redundancy allocation problem (RAP) is a famous NP.complete problem that has beenstudied in the system reliability area of ships and airplanes. Recently meta-heuristic techniques have been applied in this topic, for example, genetic algorithms, simulated annealing and tabu search. In particular, tabu search (TS) has emerged as an efficient algorithmic approach for the series-parallel RAP. However, the quality of solutions found by TS depends on the initial solution. As a robust and efficient methodology for the series-parallel RAP, the hybrid metaheuristic (TSA) that is a interactive procedure between the TS and SA (simulated annealing) is developed in this paper. In the proposed algorithm, SA is used to find the diversified promising solutions so that TS can re-intensify search for the solutions obtained by the SA. We test the proposed TSA by the existing problems and compare it with the SA and TS algorithm. Computational results show that the TSA algorithm finds the global optimal solutions for all cases and outperforms the existing TS and SA in cases of 42 and 56 subsystems.
In this study, teaching-learning based optimization (TLBO) is improved by incorporating model of multiple teachers, adaptive teaching factor, self-motivated learning, and learning through tutorial. Modified TLBO (MTLBO) is applied for simultaneous topology, shape, and size optimization of space and planar trusses to study its effectiveness. All the benchmark problems are subjected to stress, displacement, and kinematic stability constraints while design variables are discrete and continuous. Analyses of unacceptable and singular topologies are prohibited by seeing element connectivity through Grubler's criterion and the positive definiteness. Performance of MTLBO is compared to TLBO and state-of-the-art algorithms available in literature, such as a genetic algorithm (GA), improved GA, force method and GA, ant colony optimization, adaptive multi-population differential evolution, a firefly algorithm, group search optimization (GSO), improved GSO, and intelligent garbage can decision-making model evolution algorithm. It is observed that MTLBO has performed better or found nearly the same optimum solutions.

Pitched roof frames are widely used in construction of the industrial buildings, gyms, schools and colleges, fire stations, storages, hangars and many other low rise structures. The weight and shape of the gable frames with tapered members, as a familiar group of the pitched roof frames, are highly dependent on the properties of the member cross-sectional. In this work Enhanced Colliding Bodies Optimization (ECBO) is utilized for optimal design of three gable frames with tapered members. In order to optimize the frames, the design is performed using the AISC specifications for stress, displacement and stability constraints. The design constraints and weight of the gable frames are computed from the cross-section of members. These optimum weights are obtained using aforementioned optimization algorithms considering the cross-sections of the members and design constraints as optimization variables and constraints, respectively. A comparative study of the PSO and CBO with ECBO is also performed to illustrate the importance of the enhancement of the utilized optimization algorithm.

This paper aimed at modeling a fine triangular grid for network dome by using Harmony Search (HS) algorithm. For this purpose, an optimization process to find a fine regular triangular mesh on the curved surface was proposed and the analysis program was developed. An objective function was consist of areas and edge's length of each triangular and its standard deviations, and design variables were subject to the upper and lower boundary which was calculated on the nodal connectivity. Triangular network dome model, which was initially consist of randomly irregular triangular mesh, was selected for the target example and the numerical result was analyzed in accordance with the HS parameters. From the analysis results of adopted model, the fitness function has been converged and the optimized triangular grid could be obtained from the initially distorted network dome example.
This study presents a strategy so-called Subspace Search Mechanism (SSM) for reducing the computational time for convergence of population based metaheusristic algorithms. The selected metaheuristic for this study is the Cuckoo Search algorithm (CS) dealing with size optimization of trusses. The complexity of structural optimization problems can be partially due to the presence of high-dimensional design variables. SSM approach aims to reduce dimension of the problem. Design variables are categorized to predefined groups (subspaces). SSM focuses on the multiple use of the metaheuristic at hand for each subspace. Optimizer updates the design variables for each subspace independently. Updating rules require candidate designs evaluation. Each candidate design is the assemblage of responsible set of design variables that define the subspace of interest. SSM is incorporated to the Cuckoo Search algorithm for size optimizing of three small, moderate and large space trusses. Optimization results indicate that SSM enables the CS to work with less number of population (42%), as a result reducing the time of convergence, in exchange for some accuracy (1.5%). It is shown that the loss of accuracy can be lessened with increasing the order of complexity. This suggests its applicability to other algorithms and other complex finite element-based engineering design problems.
The main purpose of this study is to investigate the performance of the proposed hybrid teaching-learning based optimization algorithm on the optimum design of reinforced concrete (RC) cantilever retaining walls. For this purpose, three different design examples are optimized with 100 independent runs considering continuous and discrete variables. In order to determine the algorithm performance, the optimization results were compared with the outcomes of the nine powerful meta-heuristic algorithms applied to this problem, previously: the big bang-big crunch (BB-BC), the biogeography based optimization (BBO), the flower pollination (FPA), the grey wolf optimization (GWO), the harmony search (HS), the particle swarm optimization (PSO), the teaching-learning based optimization (TLBO), the jaya (JA), and Rao-3 algorithms. Moreover, Rao-1 and Rao-2 algorithms are applied to this design problem for the first time. The objective function is defined as minimizing the total material and labor costs including concrete, steel, and formwork per unit length of the cantilever retaining walls subjected to the requirements of the American Concrete Institute (ACI 318-05). Furthermore, the effects of peak ground acceleration value on minimum total cost is investigated using various stem height, surcharge loads, and backfill slope angle. Finally, the most robust results were obtained by HTLBO with 50 populations. Consequently the optimization results show that, depending on the increase in PGA value, the optimum cost of RC cantilever retaining walls increases smoothly with the stem height but increases rapidly with the surcharge loads and backfill slope angle.

In the past, meta-heuristic optimization algorithms were developed to solve the problems caused by complex nonlinearities occurring in natural phenomena, and various studies have been conducted to examine the applicability of the developed algorithms. The self-adaptive vision correction algorithm (SAVCA) showed excellent performance in mathematics problems, but it did not apply to complex engineering problems. Therefore, it is necessary to review the application process of the SAVCA. The SAVCA, which was recently developed and showed excellent performance, was applied to the advanced Muskingum flood routing model (ANLMM-L) to examine the application and application process. First, initial solutions were generated by the SAVCA, and the fitness was then calculated by ANLMM-L. The new value selected by a local and global search was put into the SAVCA. A new solution was generated, and ANLMM-L was applied again to calculate the fitness. The final calculation was conducted by comparing and improving the results of the new solution and existing solutions. The sum of squares (SSQ) was used to calculate the error between the observed and calculated runoff, and the applied results were compared with the current models. SAVCA, which showed excellent performance in the Muskingum flood routing model, is expected to show excellent performance in a range of engineering problems.
Natural frequencies of the structural systems should be far away from the excitation frequency in order to avoid or reduce the destructive effects of dynamic loads on structures. To accomplish this goal, a structural optimization on size and shape has been performed considering frequency constraints. Such an optimization problem has highly nonlinear property. Thus, the quality of the solution is not independent of the optimization technique to be applied. This study presents the performance evaluation of the recently proposed meta-heuristic algorithm called Teaching Learning Based Optimization (TLBO) as an optimization engine in the weight optimization of the truss structures under frequency constraints. Some examples regarding the optimization of trusses on shape and size with frequency constraints are solved. Also, the results obtained are tabulated for comparison. The results demonstrated that the performance of the TLBO is satisfactory. Additionally, TLBO is better than other methods in some cases.

This paper presents job scheduling for non-identical parallel machines using Simulated Annealing (SA). The scheduling problem accounts for allotting work parts of L lots into M parallel machines, where each lot is composed of N homogeneous jobs. Some lots may have different jobs while every job within each lot has common due date. Each machine has its own performance and set up time according to the features of the machine, and also by job types. A meta-heuristic, SA, is applied in this study to determine the job sequences of the scheduling problem so as to minimize total tardiness of due. The SA method is compared with a conventional steepest descent(SD) algorithm that is a typical tool for finding local optimum. The comparison shows the SA is much better than the SD in terms tardiness while SA takes longer , but acceptable time.
