  • In order to develope an efficient drug delivery system, experimental researches on the supercritical impregnation of ibuprofen onto mesoporous silica, MCM-41,and its drug release characteristics were performed. Supercritical carbon dioxide was adapted as an alternative solvent as it is harmless and able to avoid defects of organic solvents in drug manufacturing processes. The procedure was composed of three steps, that is, as hydrothermal synthesis of MCM-41, supercritical impregnation of ibuprofen onto MCM-41 and release of impregnated ibuprofen. Supercritical impregnation reached equilibrium within 2 h for all cases of this research and the amount of equilibrium impregnation increased with solubility of ibuprofen in supercritical carbon dioxide. Release profiles of impregnated ibuprofen showed a similar behavior for all MCM-41 with different impregnated ibuprofen.

  • There have been a lot of works in order to develop an excellent adsorbent for separation of olefin and paraffin. In the present work, the adsorption characteristics of mesoporous MCM-41 containing silver ion for 1-butene and n-butane were studied. The adsorption ability for the 1-butene depending on thermal treatment were also investigated.MCM-41 exhibits much higher adsorption amounts for 1-butene as well as n-butane, compared to those of Ag/13X zeolite. In case of MCM-41 containing silver ion, the adsorption amount of 1-butene dramatically increased due to the ${\pi}$-complexation, whereas the adsorption amount of n-butane decrease. The Ag/MCM-41 after the thermal treatment at 373 K under evacuation exhibit the highest 1-butene/n-butane adsorption ratio, expecially at low pressure (100 Torr).

  • Ordered mesoporous silica (MCM-41) materials with different textural properties were prepared using alkyl (dodecyl, cetyl, eicosane) trimethyl ammonium bromide (DTAB, CTAB, ETAB, respectively) as structure directing surfactants, functionalized with amine groups and used as adsorbent for the toxic metal ions, Cr (VI), As (V), Pb (II) and Hg (II). Amino functionalization of mesoporous MCM-41 was achieved by cocondensation of N-[3-(trimethoxysilyl)-propyl] aniline with tetraethyl orthosilicate. Adsorption isotherm and adsorption capacity of the amine functionalized materials for Cr (VI), As (V), Pb (II) and Hg (II) ions were followed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Results demonstrate that amine functionalized MCM-41 prepared with ETAB showed higher adsorption capacity for Cr (VI), As (V), Pb (II) and Hg (II) ions in comparison to MCM-41 prepared with CTAB and DTAB. The higher adsorption capacity for MCM-41(ETAB) was correlated with amine content in the material (determined by CHN analysis) and relative decrease in pore volume and pore diameter. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, nitrogen adsorptiondesorption measurements and Fourier Transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR) were used to follow the changes in the textural parameters and surface properties of the mesoporous materials as a result of amine functionalization to correlate with the adsorption characteristics. The adsorption process was found to depend on the pH of the medium.

  • The Indium modified mesoporous zeolite AlMCM-41 were synthesized by hydrothermal method and characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) techniques. The Knoevenagel condensation of aldehyde with malononitrile or ethyl cyanoacetate was carried out at reflux condition in ethanol by using heterogeneous In/AlMCM-41 catalyst. This method is fast, efficient, easy work-up and eco-friendly to afford the corresponding Knoevenagel adducts. The catalyst was recovered and reused for several cycles with consistent activity.

  • CTAB or CTAB-Nafion catalyst were successfully supported on siliceous hollow tubular MCM-41 which synthesized by hydrothermal method using CTAB as a single template or CTAB and Nafion-Na as mixed templates. The properties of two kinds of catalysts were characterized with XRD, SEM and adsorption and desorption isotherms of nitrogen and pore diameter distribution, respectively. Then they were applied to catalyze brominating reaction of 1,7-heptanediol, moreover the rate of brominating reaction with different catalysts was compared. The results showed that catalytic activities of CTAB/MCM-41 and CTAB-Nafion/MCM-41 are better than CTAB, and that of CTAB-Nafion/MCM-41 is the best because of its phase-transfer and strong acidity function. The two kinds of catalysts can be separated from the reactive products and recycled.

  • Highly ordered pure-silica MCM-41 materials possessing well-defined morphology have been successfully prepared with surfactant used as a template. The fabrication of mesoporous silica has received considerable attention due to the need to develop more efficient materials' for catalysis, separations, and chemical sensing. The surface modified MCM-41 was used as anadsorbent for biomolecules. Silica-supported organic groups and DNA adsorption on surface modified MCM-41 were investigated by FT-IR and UV-Vis spectrometer, respectively. The use of MCM-41 as the modification of electrode surfaces were investigated electrochemical properties of metal mediators with biomolecules. The modified ITO electrodes increased peak currents for a redox process of $[Ru(bpy)_3]^{2+}$ relative to the bare electrode. The electrochemical detection of DNA by cyclic voltammetry when the current is saturated in the presence of the mediator appeared more sensitive due to a higher catalytic current on the MCM-41 supported electrodes modified by carboxylic acid functional groups. The carboxyl or amine groups on the surface of MCM-41 interact and react with the $-NH_2$ groups of guanine and backbone, respectively. Highly ordered mesoporous materials with organic groups could find applications as DNA sensors.

  • Mesoporous silicate materials have been used as adsorbents for the removal of heavy metals from water by introducing functional groups such as thiol and amine. In this research, it was investigated whether surfactants used as templating agents in synthetic processes can act as adsorption sites for heavy metals. Three mesoporous silicates-SBA-15, MCM-41, and HMS were synthesized using, respectively, block copolymer, hexadecyltrimethylammoniumbromide (HDTMA), and dodecyamine as surfactants. X-ray diffraction and $N_2$ gas adsorption analysis confirmed that the mesoporous silicates were well prepared and FT-IR spectra resulted in the existence of the surfactants in as-synthesized mesoporous silicates and the removal of surfactants after calcination. The interactions between $Pb^{2+}$ ions and the mesoporous silicate materials with/without surfactants were observed. In adsorption kinetic experiments, it revealed that the calcined mesoporous silicates and the surfactant-loaded SBA-15 almost had no adsorption capacity for $Pb^{2+}$ ions. In contrast, the surfactant-loaded MCM-41 and HMS showed, respectively, the adsorption capacities of 26.60 and 115.16 mg/g which were acquired through the fits of adsorption kinetic data to the pseudo second order kinetic model. The adsorption capacities were comparable to those of other mesoporous adsorbents for heavy metals.

  • A Fe-containing mesoporous silica (Fe-MCM-41) in which part of Si in the framework was replaced by Fe(Si-O-Fe) has been successfully prepared using $Fe^{3+}$ salt by a direct synthesis route. Physical properties of the material were characterized by XRD, $N_2$ adsorption, SEM/TEM, UV-vis and FT-IR spectroscopies. Fe-MCM-41 exhibited high catalytic activity in phenol hydroxylation using $H_2O_2$ as oxidant, giving phenol conversion of ca. 60% at $50^{\circ}C$ [phenol : $H_2O_2$ = 1:1, water solvent]. Fe-MCM-41 was also applied to the growth of CNTs, utilizing a thermal-CVD reactor using acetylene gas, which demonstrated that multi-wall CNTs could be prepared efficiently using the Fe-MCM-41 catalyst.
