  • A superhydrophobic mesh is a unique structure that blocks water, while allowing gases, sound waves, and energy to pass through the holes in the mesh. This mesh is used in various devices, such as gas- and energy-permeable waterproof membranes for underwater sensors and electronic devices. However, it is difficult to fabricate micro- and nano-structures on three-dimensional surfaces, such as the cylindrical surface of a wire mesh. In this research, we successfully produced a superhydrophobic water-repellent mesh with a high contact angle (> $150^{\circ}$) for nanofibrous structures. Conducting polymer (CP) composite nanofibers were evenly coated on a stainless steel mesh surface, to create a superhydrophobic mesh with a pore size of $100{\mu}m$. The nanofiber structure could be controlled by the deposition time. As the deposition time increased, a high-density, hierarchical nanofiber structure was deposited on the mesh. The mesh surface was then coated with Teflon, to reduce the surface energy. The fabricated mesh had a static water contact angle of $163^{\circ}$, and a water-pressure resistance of 1.92 kPa.

  • The present study proposes a new structure for a flat plate heat pipe which could embody a thin thickness, any shapes and high heat density a unit area. It is on the structure for the formation of vapor passages and the support of the case of the flat plate heat pipe. A screen mesh is used as the one. To verify the validity of the one, the flat plate heat pipe of 1.08mm thickness was made with a layer of the screen mesh with 14 and 100 mesh number respectively and tested. Here the screen mesh with 14 mesh number plays a role of the vapor passage and the support of the case and the screen mesh with 100 mesh number functions as the wick structure. T he results show that the screen mesh excellently carries out the function of the vapor passage and the support of the case.

  • We apply a partitioned-solution (iterative-staggered) coupling method based on a fixed Eulerian mesh with the level set function to a large-deformation fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problem where a large-deformable thin structure moves in a high-speed flow field, as an airbag does during deployment. This method combines advanced fluid and structure solvers-specifically, the constrained interpolation profile finite element method (CIP-FEM) for fluid Eulerian mesh and large-deformable structural elements for Lagrangian structural mesh. We express the large-deformable interface as a zero isosurface by the level set function, and introduce virtual nodes with level sets and structural normal velocities to generate the level set function according to the large-deformable interfacial geometry and enforce the kinematic condition at the interface. The virtual nodes are located in the direction normal to the structural mesh. It is confirmed that application of the method to unfolded airbag deployment simulation shows the adequacy of the method.

  • The 'ITO/Ag/ITO' multilayers as a highly conductive and transparent electrode, even with the optimum thickness conditions, the transmittances were much lower than those of a single ITO layer on some ranges of the visible wavelength. In order to improve the transmittance, Ag layer was formed with mesh structure. Where, the thickness of the Ag layer was about 10 nm and the space between the Ag lines was varied from 2.9 ㎛ to 19.6 ㎛ with the fixed Ag width of about 1.2 ㎛ in order to vary an open ratio of the Ag mesh structure. The transmittance and sheet resistance in the ITO/Mesh-Ag/ITO multilayer structure were analyzed depending on the open ratio. As a result, a trade off in the open ratio was necessary in order to obtain the transmittance as high as possible and the sheet resistance as possible low. By the open ratio of about 86%, in the ITO/Mesh-Ag/ITO multilayer structure, the transmittance was nearly same as the single ITO layer and the sheet resistance was about 62.3 Ω/.

  • The research on peer-to-peer streaming schemes has largely focused on tree-push and mesh-pull structures. However, the tree-push structure has a defect that the tree restructuring time is long, and the mesh-pull structure has long startup delay and lag time from source servers. In this paper, we propose a new peer-to-peer live streaming scheme based on a push-mesh structure that takes advantages of tree-push and mesh-pull structure simultaneously. This structure basically provides the mesh-pull mechanism for data transmission and utilizes peers with high network upload capacity. It also supports the push mechanism along with paths from a source server, super peers, and selected general peers. By NS-2 simulation experiments, we finally show that our proposed scheme can achieve shorter startup delay than the mesh-pull structure, similar lag time to tree-push structure and best playback continuity among the three schemes.

  • Triangular mesh models are widely used in reverse engineering, computer graphics, rapid prototyping and NC(numerical controller) tool-path generation. Triangular mesh models are generated from point clouds, surface models and solid models. A halfedge-based triangular mesh data structure is proposed and the development considerations are presented. In the presented data structure, halfedge is the key data structure. Halfedge stores its triangle index and the order in the triangle. Triangles do not store the halfedge lists explicitly. Halfedge is referred by value and defined when it is required. Proposed data structure supports four design requirements: efficient rendering, compact memory, supporting efficient algorithms and easy programming.

  • In this paper, a realtime approach to the simulation of virtual paper with an adaptive mesh structure is proposed. The proposed method can be applied to arbitrary triangular mesh structures and efficiently produces wrinkles and creases on the paper surface with stable numerical integration and deformation-based mesh refinement. In order to plausibly represent the crumples on the paper object, we employed an adaptive mesh structure with breakable springs. Because the adaptive structure continuously inserts or removes vertices and edges to or from the mesh structure, the conservation of the mass and the momentum should be carefully taken into account for the plausible simulation of the virtual paper. The proposed method produced plausible animation of paper-like thin shell in realtime environments.

  • An engineering goal in vibration and noise professionals is to develope quiet machines at the preliminary design stage, and various numerical techniques such as FEM, SEA or BEM are one of the schemes toward the goal. In this paper, the research has been focused on the sensitivity effect of mesh sizes for FEM application so that the optimum size of the mesh that leads to engineering solution within acceptable computing time could be generated. In order to evaluate the mesh size effect, three important parameters have been examined : natural frequencies, number of modes and driving point mobility. First, several lower modes including the fundamental frequency of a 2-D plate structure have been calculated as mesh size changes. Since theoretical values of natural frequencies for a simple structure are known, the deviation between the numerical and theoretical values is obtained as a function of mesh size. The result shows that the error is no longer decreased if the mesh size becomes a quarter wavelength or smaller than that. Second, the mesh size effect is also investigated for the number of modes. For the frequency band up to 1.4 kHz, the structure should have 38 modes in total. As the mesh size reaches to the quarter wavelength, the total count in modes approaches to the same values. Third, a mobility function at the driving point is compared between SEA and FEM result. In SEA application, the mobility function is determined by the modal density and the mass of the structure. It is independent of excitation frequencies. When the mobility function is calculated from a wavelength to one-tenth of it, the mobility becomes constant if the mesh becomes a quarter wavelength or smaller. We can conclude that dynamic parameters, such as eigenvalues, mode count, and mobility function, can be correctly estimated, while saving the computing burden, if a quarter wavelength (.lambda./4) mesh is used. Therefore, (.lambda./4) mesh is recommended in structural vibration analysis.

  • Meshes are the most appropriate data structures for representing 3D geometries. Surface meshes have been frequently used for representing 3D geometries, which only samples data on the surfaces of the given 3D geometries. Thanks to the improvements of computing powers, it is required to develop more complicated contents which utilize the volumetric information of 3D geometries. In this paper, we introduce a novel volumetric mesh libraries based on the half-face data structure, called OpenVolMesh, and describe its designs and implementations. The OpenVolMesh extends the OpenMesh, which is one of the most famous mesh libraries, by supporting volumetric meshes. The OpenVolMesh provides the generic programming, dynamic allocations of primitive properties, efficient array-based data structures, and source-level compatibility with OpenMesh. We show the usefulness of the OpenVolMesh in the developments of 3D volumetric contents with prototypic implementations such as volumetric mesh smoothing and CW-cell decompositions.

  • Mesh model generated from 3D reconstruction usually comes with lots of noise, which challenges the performance and robustness of mesh simplification approaches. To overcome this problem, we present a novel method for mesh simplification which could preserve structure and improve the accuracy. Our algorithm considers both the planar structures and linear features. In the preprocessing step, it automatically detects a set of planar structures through an iterative diffusion approach based on Region Seed Growing algorithm; then robust linear features of the mesh model are extracted by exploiting image information and planar structures jointly; finally we simplify the mesh model with plane constraint QEM and linear feature preserving strategies. The proposed method can overcome the known problem that current simplification methods usually degrade the structural characteristics, especially when the decimation is extreme. Our experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method, compared to other simplification algorithms, can effectively improve the quality of mesh and yield an increased robustness on noisy input mesh.
