Even though the fire performance-based design concept has been introduced for various structures and buildings, which have their own specific fire performance level, the uncertainties of input parameters always exist and, then, could reduce significantly the reliability of the fire modeling. Sensitivity analysis was performed with three limited input parameters, HRRPUA, type of combustible materials, and mesh size, which are significantly important for fire modeling. The output variables are limited to the maximum HRR, the time reaching the reference temperature($60^{\circ}C$), and that to reach limited visible distance(5 m). In addition, correlation coefficient analysis was attempted to analyze qualitatively and quantitatively the degree of relation between input and output variables above. Finally, the relationship among the three variables is also analyzed by the principal component analysis (PCA) to systematically analyze the input data bias. Sensitivity analysis showed that the type of combustible materials is more sensitive to maximum HRR than the ignition source and mesh size. However, the heat release parameter of the ignition source(HRR) is shown to be much more sensitive than the combustible material types and mesh size to both time to reach the reference temperature and that to reach the critical visible distance. Since the derived results can not exclude the possibility that there is a dependency on the fire model applied in this study, it is necessary to generalize and standardize the results of this study for the fire models such as various buildings and structures.
Finite element method (FEM) provides several advantages over other numerical methods such as boundary element method, since it allows truly volumetric analysis and incorporation of realistic electrical conductivity values. Finite element mesh generation is the first requirement in such in FEM to represent the volumetric domain of interest with numerous finite elements accurately. However, conventional mesh generators and approaches offered by commercial packages do not generate meshes that are content-adaptive to the contents of given images. In this paper, we present software that has been implemented to generate content-adaptive finite element meshes (cMESHes) based on the contents of MR images. The software offers various computational tools for cMESH generation from multi-slice MR images. The software named as the Content-adaptive FE Mesh Generation Toolbox runs under the commercially available technical computation software called Matlab. The major routines in the toolbox include anisotropic filtering of MR images, feature map generation, content-adaptive node generation, Delaunay tessellation, and MRI segmentation for the head conductivity modeling. The presented tools should be useful to researchers who wish to generate efficient mesh models from a set of MR images. The toolbox is available upon request made to the Functional and Metabolic Imaging Center or Bio-imaging Laboratory at Kyung Hee University in Korea.
The finite element method is wide used in simulation in the biomechanical structures, but a lack of studies concerning finite element mesh quality in biomechanics is a reality. The present study intends to analyze the importance of the mesh quality in the finite element model results from humeral structure. A sensitivity analysis of finite element models (FEM) is presented for the humeral bone and cartilage structures. The geometry of bone and cartilage was acquired from CT scan and geometry reconstructed. The study includes 54 models from same bone geometry, with different mesh densities, constructed with tetrahedral linear elements. A finite element simulation representing the glenohumeral-joint reaction force applied on the humerus during $90^{\circ}$ abduction, with external load as the critical condition. Results from the finite element models suggest a mesh with 1.5 mm, 0.8 mm and 0.6 mm as suitable mesh sizes for cortical bone, trabecular bone and humeral cartilage, respectively. Relatively to the higher minimum principal strains are located at the proximal humerus diaphysis, and its highest value is found at the trabecular bone neck. The present study indicates the minimum mesh size in the finite element analyses in humeral structure. The cortical and trabecular bone, as well as cartilage, may not be correctly represented by meshes of the same size. The strain results presented the critical regions during the $90^{\circ}$ abduction.

The present work focuses on experimental and numerical performance of the ferrocement RC walls reinforced with welded steel mesh, expanded steel mesh, fiber glass mesh and tensar mesh individually. The experimental program comprised twelve RC walls having the dimensions of 450 mm×100 mm×1000 mm under concentric compression loadings. The studied variables are the type of reinforcing materials, the number of mesh layers and volume fraction of reinforcement. The main aim is to assess the influence of engaging the new inventive materials in reinforcing the composite RC walls. Non-linear finite element analysis; (NLFEA) was carried out to simulate the behavior of the composite walls employing ANSYS-10.0 Software. Parametric study is also demonstrated to check out the variables that can mainly influence the mechanical behavior of the model such as the change of wall dimensions. The obtained numerical results indicated the acceptable accuracy of FE simulations in the estimation of experimental values. In addition, the strength gained of specimens reinforced with welded steel mesh was higher by amount 40% compared with those reinforced with expanded steel mesh. Ferrocement specimens tested under axial compression loadings exhibit superior ultimate loads and energy absorbing capacity compared to the conventional reinforced concrete one.

As the finite element method has become a considerable and effective design tool in ship structural analysis, modeling of three dimensional finite element mesh is more necessary than before. However, the unique style and complexity of a ship usually make the modeling be hard and costly. Although most pre-processor of FEM software and geometric modeler provides modeling function, the capability is quite limited for complicated structure. In order to perform FEM modeling quickly, it is necessary to extract, rearrange, and formalize data from ship design database for partially automatic mesh generation. In this paper, the process of designing relational data tables from design data is shown as a part of analysis automation with the application of engineering database concept.

Being contacted directly with. ground, the tire tread part is in shape of complex patterns of variable ASDs(anti-skid depth) to satisfy various tire performances. However, owing to the painstaking mesh generation job and the extremely long CPU-time, conventional 3-D tire analyses have been performed by either neglecting tread pattern or modeling circumferential grooves only. As a result, such simplified analysis models lead to considerably poor numerical expectations. This paper addresses the development of a 3-D tire mesh generation considering the detailed tread pattern and shows that the contact pressure and frictional energy distribution of tires considering the detailed pattern become better than those by the simplified tire model.

This paper describes an automatic finite element (FE) mesh generation for three-dimensional structures consisting of tree-form surfaces. This mesh generation process consists of three subprocesses: (a) definition of geometric model, (b) generation of nodes, and (c) generation of elements. One of commercial solid modelers is employed for three-dimensional solid structures. Node is generated if its distance from existing node points is similar to the node spacing function at the point. The node spacing function is well controlled by the fuzzy knowledge processing. The Voronoi diagram method is introduced as a basic tool for element generation. Automatic generation of FE meshes for three-dimensional solid structures holds great benefits for analyses. Practical performances of the present system are demonstrated through several mesh generations for three-dimensional complex geometry.

VRML data, which is mainly structural element, is frequently used for modeling and visualizing 3D objects. Although there can be variations, it is a usual practice to represent 3D shapes in VRML format. Ever since the advent of Internet, there have been strong needs to transfer shape data through Internet. Because of this need, it is necessary to transform a data file in VRML or similar format into a more convenient form to transfer through the network. In a VRML file, a model is sometimes divided into a set of triangle meshes due to several practical reasons. However, this causes various demerits for the fast transmission. Therefore, it is more efficient to merge the mesh sets into one mesh set for the transmission. In this paper, we present the problems in the merge process and the techniques to handle the situation.
