An unfavorable tipping movement can occur during the retraction of anterior teeth because orthodontic force is loaded by brackets positioned far from the center of resistance. To avoid this unfavorable movement, a compensating curved wire or lingual root torque wire is used. The purpose of this study is to investigate, using photoelastic material, the distribution of initial stress associated with the retraction of the incisors according to the degree of the compensating curve, to model changes associated with tooth ud alveolar bone structure. The following results were obtained by analysis of the polarizing plate of the effects of initial stress resulting from retraction of the anterior teeth: 1. When the incisors were retracted using combination archwire or sliding mechanics, the maximal polarizing pattern of the apical area decreased as the degree of the compensating owe increased from 0 to 15 to 30. 2. When the incisors were retracted by the combination archwire or sliding mechanics, the maximal polarizing pattern of the canine and premolar area increased as the degree of the compensating curve increased from 0to 15to 30. 3. A lower degree of polarizing patterns were associated with the combination archwire technique than the sliding mechanics technique at a given force. The above results indicate that there is no significant difference between the combination loop archwire technique and sliding mechanics, for the retraction of maxillary anterior teeth with decreased lingual tipping tendency by a compensating curve on the arch wire. However, the use of sliding mechanics is more effective for the prevention of lingual inclination of the anterior teeth, because the hook used in sliding mechanics is closer to the center of resistance of the maxillary anterior teeth.

With the development of the technology of underwater moving bodies, the need for developing the knowledge of surface effect interaction of free surface and underwater moving bodies is increased. Hence, the two-phase flow is a subject which is interesting for many researchers all around the world. In this paper, the non-linear free surface deformations which occur during the water-exit of a circular cylinder due to its buoyancy are solved using finite volume discretization based code, and using Volume of Fluid (VOF) scheme for solving two phase flow. Dynamic mesh model is used to simulate dynamic motion of the cylinder. In addition, the effect of cylinder mass in presence of an external force is studied. Moreover, the oblique exit and entry of a circular cylinder with two exit angles is simulated. At last, water-exit of a circular cylinder in six degrees of freedom is simulated in 3D using parallel processing. The simulation errors of present work (using VOF method) for maximum velocity and height of a circular cylinder are less than the corresponding errors of level set method reported by previous researchers. Oblique exit shows interesting results; formation of waves caused by exit of the cylinder, wave motion in horizontal direction and the air trapped between the waves are observable. In 3D simulation the visualization of water motion on the top surface of the cylinder and the free surface breaking on the front and back faces of the 3D cylinder at the exit phase are observed which cannot be seen in 2D simulation. Comparing the results, 3D simulation shows better agreement with experimental data, specially in the maximum height position of the cylinder.
In this study, pullout tests were carried out to evaluate pullout characteristics of waste fishing net (WFN), which added into bottom ash for recycling both bottom ash and WFN. Three different mesh size of WFN (WFN20:$20mm{\times}20mm$, WFN30:$30mm{\times}30mm$, WFN40:$40mm{\times}40mm$) and geogrid were added as a reinforcement. Pullout characteristics of waste fishing net were compared with those of the geogrid. Pullout test results showed that pullout strength and stiffness of WFN20 are a little less than those of geogrid. However, the pullout friction angle of WFN20 is similar to that of geogrid due to bearing resistance induced from transverse rib because thickness of WFN20 is greater than geogrid. Pullout test results also indicated that distribution of residual strain along reinforcement after test depends on overburden stress. Residual strain at the tip of reinforcement increased with an increase in overburden stress due to concentration of pullout force on the tip of reinforcement.
This paper proposes a non-self-intersecting multiresolution deformable model to extract and reconstruct three-dimensional boundaries of objects from volumetric data. Deformable models offer an attractive method for extracting and reconstructing the boundary surfaces. However, convensional deformable models have three limitations- sensitivity to model initialization, difficulties in dealing with severe object concavities, and model self-intersections. We address the initialization problem by multiresolution model representation, which progressively refines the deformable model based on multiresolution volumetric data in order to extract the boundaries of the objects in a coarse-to-fine fashion. The concavity problem is addressed by mesh size regularization, which matches its size to the unit voxel of the volumetric data. We solve the model self-intersection problem by including a non-self-intersecting force among the customary internal and external forces in the physics-based formulation. This paper presents results of applying our new deformable model to extracting a sphere surface with concavities from a computer-generated volume data and a brain cortical surface from a MR volume data.

In this paper, the wave forces on a cylindrical aquaculture fish cage, which consists of the porous mesh with the uniform porosity, are analyzed using matched eigenfunction expansion method. The boundary condition on the porous net is derived based on the Darcy's law, which implies that the velocity of the fluid passing through the net is linearly proportional to the pressure difference between two sides of the net. The wave forces and wave responses are investigated by changing the porous parameter of porous net as well as the submerged position (floating type, bottom-mounted type) of an aquaculture fish cage. It is found that the wave forces on a bottom-mounted type are largely decreased compared with that on a floating type. Also, the porosity of the netting structure plays an important role in reducing the wave forces and the wave elevation in the vicinity of an aquaculture fish cage.

In this paper, a connection details for precast arch structures was proposed. Experiments were performed to evaluate structural performance of the loop connection details satisfying current design requirements and of alternative details for improvement of constructability. Precast arch specimens considering the current design requirements showed higher structural capacity than a cast-in-place arch specimen. Crack width at the connection of arch crown showed smaller value than 0.2 mm due to increased compression force by the applied vertical load. Strengthening by wire-mesh at notch area of the connection improved initial crack control capability. Connection detail with couplers and headed bars showed similar capacity to the reference specimen. The alternative details to improve constructability of reinforcements can be used without decreasing structural performance. Specimens with smaller internal diameter of mandrel and shorter loop splicing than the current design codes showed worse behavior in terms of crack width control.
This study presents the formulation of beam transition elements and transition zone elements for the effective finite element analysis of the transition regions of coupled wall structures. Beam transition element can be described as the quasi beam element which is replaced by an equivalent plane stress element, keeping equally, the basic behavior of beam element, based on the kinematic and force constraints between beam and wall element. These beam transition elements solve the incompatibility related to different degrees of freedom between beam and wall element in transition regions. Also, the stiffness matrices of transition zone elements which are directly connected with beam transition elements in transition regions can be derived from the equivalent constraint conditions. These elements provide the reasonable mesh grading schemes for transition regions and can be usefully applied to the transition regions of all structures that the interactions of wall and beam element are considered.

Recent work in the mechanics of fracture points out the desirability of a knowledge of the elastic energy release rate, the crack extension force, and the character of the stress field surrounding a crack tip in analyzing the strength of cracked bodies. The objective of this work is to provide a discussion of the energy rates, stress fields and the like of various cases for anisotropic elastic bodies which might be of interest. Reinforced concrete, wood, laminates, and some special types of elastic bodies with controlled grain orientation are often orthotropic. In this paper, determination of the stress intensity factors(SIFs) of orthotropic plane elastic body using crack tip singular element and fine mesh in near the crack tip is performed. A numerical method in this paper was used by displacement correlation method. A numerical example problem of an orthotropic cantilevered single edge cracked elastic body subjected to shear loading was analyzed, and the results of this paper are in good agreement with those of the others.

The flowfield behind two cylinders and flow-induced noise generated from the cylinders in various arrangement are numerically investigated based on the finite difference lattice Boltzmann model with 21 velocity bits. which is introduced a flexible specific heat ${\gamma}$ to simulate diatomic gases like air. In an isolated cylinder with two type of mesh. some flow parameters such as Strouhal number $S_t$ and acoustic pressure ${\Delta}p$ simulated from the solution are given and quantitatively compared with those provided the previous works. The effects of the center-to-center pitch ratio $L_{cc}/d=2.0$ in staggered circular cylinders as shown in Fig. 1 and angles of incidence ${\alpha}=30^{\circ}(T_{cc}/d=0.5)$, $45^{\circ}(T_{cc}/d =0.707)$ and $60^{\circ}\;(T_{cc}/d=0.866)$, respectively, are studied. Our analysis focuses on the small-scale instabilities of vortex shedding, which occurs in staggered arrangement. With the results of drag $C_d$ and lift $C_l$ coefficients and vorticity contours. the mechanisms of the interference phenomenon and its interaction with the two-dimensional vortical structures are present in the flowfields under $Re\;{\le}\;200$. The results show that we successively capture very small pressure fluctuations, with the same frequency of vortex shedding, much smaller than the whole pressure fluctuation around pairs of circular cylinders. The upstream cylinder behaves like an isolated single cylinder, while the downstream one experiences wake-induced flutter. It is expected that, therefore, the relative position of the downstream cylinder has significant effects on the flow-induce noise, hydrodynamic force and vortex shedding characteristics of the cylinders.
For thin panel welded structure, the various welding distortions were found due to the low resistance against welding deformation. Especially, buckling distortion induced in the thin panel welded structure produce severe problems related to cost in production stage and safety in service life. So, many researches including mechanical and thermal tensioning method for preventing the occurrence of buckling distortion in the production stage have been performed. The purpose of this study is to identify the behavior of longitudinal residual stress at the SA butt weldment with thin plate of 6mm thickness under tension load by 3 dimensional FEA. For it, mesh design for 3D FEA was constructed with 20 nodes brick element for butt weldment and 8 nodes shell element for base metal. According to FEA results, the longitudinal compressive strain inducing tensile residual stress at the butt weldment decreased. It was because the compressive thermal strain in way of weldment was reduced by tension load. The control effect of residual stress increased with an increase in tension load. So, if the amount of tension load applied to the weldment exceeds 1.5 times of longitudinal shrinkage force, the amount of longitudinal residual stress decreased below the critical value inducing the buckling distortion at the SA butt weldment. Its validity was verified by experiment.
