  • Today, museums are designed with specific purposes with themes to raise issues based on themes, history, culture or other special focuses. Among many of these thematic museums, Jewish museums are built around the world in order to let the future generations know the history and dark past memory of the Jewish people. Accordingly, the aim and significance of this study are to analyze the characteristics of design expressions of the museum architecture of Jewish museums done by various architects to help visitors empathize the dark period of the Jews during the holocaust. This particular study will be focused on analyzing 7 museums under the theme of holocaust and Jewish people's life affected because of the tragic event. Spatial organization, exhibition space composition, exhibition techniques such as the exhibition storytelling or scenario and natural light distribution will be analyzed to find expressional characters of Jewish museum's design and how the design form strengthen the museum's purpose. To achieve the aim of the study, targets for the theoretical discussion and case analysis regarding the design approach are discussed in chapter 2, characteristics of the cases are analyzed and synthesized in chapter 3, and finally the conclusion in chapter 4. The study found, that distinctive characters of spatial expression have direct impact on visitor's understanding of the museum purpose and it helps viewers to empathize and to be educated about the situation. Well designed architectural form, spatial organization, choice of materials and colors as well as story telling techniques of the museum will solidify the meaning of the exhibitions inside. Results found in the study will be the guidance for future study on thematic museum planning.

  • The needs for visualizing interactive multimedia contents on portable devices with realistic three dimensional shapes are increasing as new ubiquitous services are coming into reality. Especially in digital fashion applications with virtual reality technologies for clothes of various forms on different avatars, it is required to provide very high quality visual models over mobile networks. Due to limited network bandwidths and memory spaces of portable devices, it is very difficult to transmit visual data effectively and render realistic appearance of three dimensional images. In this thesis, we propose a compression method to reduce three dimensional data for digital fashion applications. The three dimensional model includes animation of avatar which require very large amounts of data over time. Our proposed method utilizes temporal and spatial coherence of animation data, to reduce the amount. By grouping vertices from three dimensional models, the entire animation is represented by a movement path of a few representative vertices. The existing three dimensional model compression approaches can get benefits from the proposed method by reducing the compression sources through grouping. We expect that the proposed method to be applied not only to three dimensional garment animations but also to generic deformable objects.

  • Methods based on integer programming have been shown to be very effective in solving various crew pairing optimization problems. However, their applicability is limited to problems with linear constraints and objective functions. Also, those methods often require an unacceptable amount of time and/or memory resources given problems of larger scale. Heuristic methods such as neighborhood search, on the other hand, can handle large-scaled problems without too much difficulty and can be applied to problems having any form of objective functions and constraints. However, neighborhood search often gets stuck at local optima when faced with complex search spaces. This paper presents ,i hybrid algorithm of neighborhood search and integer programming, which nicely combines the advantages of both methods. The hybrid algorithm has been successfully tested on a large-scaled crew pairing optimization problem for a real subway line.

  • Recently, with the development of mobile devices and near field communication, mobile P2P networks have been actively studied to improve the limits of the existing centralized processing system. A peer has limited components such as batteries, memory and storage spaces in mobile P2P networks. The trust of a peer should be discriminated in order to share reliable contents in mobile P2P networks. In this paper, we propose a trust discrimination scheme considering limited resources in mobile P2P environments. The proposed scheme discriminates the trust of a peer by direct rating values using the rating information of the peer and indirect rating values by the other peers. The recent update time is included in the rating information. The proposed scheme reduces the redundant rating information by comparing the recent update times of the rating information. It is shown through performance evaluation that the proposed scheme reduces the number of messages and improves the accuracy of trust over the existing scheme.

  • Assuming that different spatial types involves the change of observation time to acquire the spatial information, this study intended to analyze the observation time by interior space types and derive the proper time for spatial evaluation. Coming to the study method, in order to analyze the characteristics of observation time in the image evaluation of interior space by types, it looked into the observation time chosen by the testees during evaluation. The findings of this study are as follows: First, the observation time differed by genders and spatial types: men's average time was longest for modern (93.3 sec.) and natural (89.4 sec.) spaces; women's average time was longest for classic space (110.7 sec.), which was the shortest for men. Second, the intensity of observation time zone differed by spatial types: this finding can imply that different design types require different establishment of observation time for evaluation even if the spatial elements are the same. Third, analyzing the distribution of time zones chosen by most testees showed that men's observation time zones were more intensely distributed than those of women. Fourthly, the observation lime for general space could be derived from the gender-based comparison that excluded the difference by types, but considering that different design types lead to different observation time, it could be seen as proper for evaluation of interior space to establish the difference of observation time by spatial types. Finally, Analysis showed the highest preference to the time '(3)'. However, obtaining information presented is the most highly effective time is '(6). Thus, the preferred time zone is different and effective, according to the results of the analysis.

  • The Therme Vals is a hotel and spa which combines a complete sensory experience designed by Peter Zumthor. This study aims to find emotional design approaches of the Therme Vals through references, observation from site visit, interview and discussion related to this topic. This space was designed for visitors to luxuriate and rediscover the ancient benefits of bathing. The combinations of light and shade, open and enclosed spaces and linear elements make for a highly sensuous and restorative experience. The study observed the emotional design characteristics of the Therme Vals through space approach, aesthetic and experiential sides. For space approach side, emotional experience in gradual process to approach the space was mentioned, for aesthetic side, mystical combination of light, stone and water was observed, for experiential side, 5 senses experience and space programing for adjusting the density of the space were observed. This study found that the spa has the quality of spiritual, soul-touching delight like religious experience. The fascination for the mystic qualities of a world of stone within the mountain, for darkness and light, for light reflections on the water or in the steam saturated air, pleasure in the unique acoustics of the bubbling water in a world of stone, the ritual of bathing-all these notions were explained in Peter Zumthor's construction details. In the result of the interview and discussion, people love the space and praised it highly for the emotional design regardless of space experience, age, sex or ethnicity. Emotional design approaches based on human nature, materiality, and memory of the places is more powerful than other emotional design ideas with technical devices, special themes, digital effects, vivid colors and shapes.

  • By estimating conditional quantile functions of the response, quantile regression (QR) can provide comprehensive information of the relationship between the response and the predictors. In addition, kernel quantile regression (KQR) estimates a nonlinear conditional quantile function in reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces generated by a positive definite kernel function. However, it is infeasible to use the KQR in analysing a massive data due to the limitations of computer primary memory. We propose a divide and conquer based KQR (DC-KQR) method to overcome such a limitation. The proposed DC-KQR divides the entire data into a few subsets, then applies the KQR onto each subsets and derives a final estimator by aggregating all results from subsets. Simulation studies are presented to demonstrate the satisfactory performance of the proposed method.

  • In this paper, we propose the two dimensional variable-length vector storage format which can be used for efficient storage of sparse matrix in the FEM (finite element method). The proposed storage format is the method storing only actual needed non-zero values of each row on upper triangular matrix with the total rows N, by using two dimensional variable-length vector instead of $N{\times}N$ large sparse matrix of entire equation of finite elements. This method only needs storage spaces of the number of minimum 1 to maximum 5 in 2D grid structure and the number of minimum 1 to maximum 14 in 3D grid structure of analysis target. The number doesn't excess two times although involving index number. From the experimental result, we can find out that the proposed storage format can reduce the memory space more effectively, as the total number of nodes increases, than the existing skyline storage format storing maximum column height.

  • Genetic algorithm, which uses principles of natural selection and population genetics, is an efficient method to find out an optimal solution. In conventional genetic algorithms, however, the size of gene pool needs to be increased to insure a convergency. Therefore, many memory spaces and much computation time were needed. Also, since child chromosomes were generated by chromosome crossover and gene mutation, the algorithms have a complex structure. Thus, in this paper, a compact stereo matching algorithm using a population-based incremental learning based on probability vector is proposed to reduce these problems. The PBIL method is modified for matching environment. Since th proposed algorithm uses a probability vector and eliminates gene pool, chromosome crossover, and gene mutation, the matching algorithm is simple and the computation load is considerably reduced. Even though the characteristics of images are changed, stable outputs are obtained without the modification of the matching algorithm.

  • Even though there are many analysis methods of circular tanks on elastic foundation, the finite element method is widely used for that purpose. But the finite element method requires a number of memory spaces, computation time to solve large stiffness equations. In this study many the simplified methods(Analogy of Beam on Elastic Foundation, Foundation Stiffness Matrix, Finite Element Method and Transfer Matrix Method) are applied to analyze a circular tank on elastic foundation. By the given analysis methods, BEF analogy and foundation matrix method, the circular tank was transformed into the skeletonized frame structure. The frame structure was divided into several finite elements. The stiffness matrix of a finite element is related with the transfer matrix of the element. Thus, the transfer matrix of each finite element utilized the transfer matrix method to simplify the analysis of the tank. There were no significant difference in the results of two methods, the finite element method and the transfer matrix method. The transfer method applied to a circular tank on elastic foundation resulted in four simultaneous equations to solve completely.
