  • Poly(vinyl alcohol)(PVA) membranes crosslinked with Glutaraldehyde (GA) were prepared for the separation of acetic acid-water mixtures. For the preparation of the crosslinked membranes, dry PVA films were immersed for 2 days at 40$\circ$C in reaction solutions which contain different content of GA solution(25% GA in water), aceton and a catalyst, HCl. IR spectroscopy was employed to characterize the crosslinking reaction between hydroxyl groups in PVA and aldehyde groups in GA. Swelling measurements of the crosslinked membranes were carried out in both water and acetic acid to investigate the crosslinking density and swelling behaviour of the membranes.

  • Polymer electrolyte membranes are developed for the applications to facilitated transport membranes, fuel cells and solar cells. The polymer electrolyte membranes containing silver salt show the remarkably high separation performance for olefin/paraffin mixture in the solid state; the propylene permeance is 45 GPU and the ideal selectivity of propylene/propane is 15,000. For fuel cell membranes, the effects of the presence and size of the proton transport channels on the proton conductivity and methanol permeability were investigated. The cell performance for dye-sensitized solar cells employing polymer electrolytes are measured under light illumination. The overall energy conversion efficiency reaches 5.44 % at 10 ㎽/$\textrm{cm}^2$, to our knowledge the highest value ever reported in the polymer electrolytes.

  • 1. Introduction : The clean technology using ion exchange membranes have drawn attention increasingly with advancement of the membrane synthesis. Ion exchange membranes have been used for diffusion dialysis, electrodialysis, electrodialytic water splitting and electrodeionization. Bipolar membranes(BPM), consisting of a cation exchange layer and an an_ion exchange layer, can convert a salt to an acid and a base without chemical addition. Using the bipolar membrane, a large quantity of industrial wastes containing salts can be reprocessed to generate acids and bases. Recent development of high performance bipolar membranes enables to further expand the potential use of electrodialysis in the chemical industry. The water-splitting mechanism in the bipolar membrane, however, is a controversial subject yet. In this study bipolar membranes were prepared using commercial ion exchange membranes and hydrophilic polymer as a binder to investigate the effects of the interface hydrophilicity on water-splitting efficiency. In addition, the water splitting mechanism by a metal catalyst was discussed.

  • Poly Sulfone nanofibers were electrospun to fabricate membranes of different characteristics. To fabricate the fiber mats, polymer concentration, flowrate, and current density were determined as the most influencing factors affecting the overall performance of the membranes and studied through Response Surface Methodology. The Box-Behnken Design method (three factors at three levels) was used to design, analyze, and optimize the parameters to achieve the best possible performance of the electrospun membranes in forward osmosis process. Also, internal concentration polarization that characterizes the efficiency of the forward osmosis membranes was determined to better assess the overall performance of the fabricated electrospun membranes. Water flux to reverse salt flux was considered as the main response to assess the performance of the membranes. As confirmed experimentally, best membrane performance with the minimal structural parameter value could be achieved when predicted optimal values were used to fabricate the membranes through electrospinning process.

  • Carbon nanotubes (CNTs), due to their excellent physical, chemical and mechanical properties and their ability to prepare new membranes with attractive properties, have found applications in water and wastewater technology. CNT functionalization, which involves the introduction of different types of functional groups into pure CNTs, improves the capabilities of CNT membranes for water and wastewater treatment. It turns out that CNT-based membranes have many advantages, including enhanced water permeability, high selectivity and anti-fouling properties. However, their full-scale application is still limited by their high cost. With their tremendous separation efficiency, low biofouling potential and ultra-high water flux, CNT membranes have the potential to be a leading technology in water treatment in the future, especially in desalination.

  • Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) can be a promising alternative for the solution of dye removal from coloured effluents. Polymeric membranes are widely used due to their good film-forming ability, flexibility, separation properties, and cost. However, they have low mechanical, chemical, and thermal resistances. Moreover, the fouling of polymeric membranes is high because of their hydrophobic nature. Hence, there is an increasing interest in organic-inorganic hybrid membranes as a new-generation membrane material. It has been shown that carbon nanotubes have the potential to increase the material properties of polymers with their low density, high strength, hardness, and exceptional aspect ratio. In this work, carbon nanotubes blended MMMs were prepared and methyl orange removal efficiency of them was investigated. Compared to the bare membranes, MMMs showed not only increased hydrophilicity, water content, and pure water flux but also increased methyl orange rejection and flux recovery

  • Deoxyribonucelic acid (DNA) molecules have a huge molecular weight so that DNA was reported to be a promising natural polymer to give durable films. Among many applications of DNA, the authors focused their attention on separation membranes derived from DNA because membranes will play an important role in environmental and energy related processes. DNA-polyion complex membranes were prepared from DNA and corresponding polycations. The DNA-polyion complex membranes showed chiral separation ability toward racemic amino acid mixtures.
