  • To improve the blood compatibility of cellulose membrane, 2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl-2-(trimethylammonium)ethyl phosphate(MTP), which is a methacrylate with phospholipid polar group, and glycidyl methacrylate(GMA) were grafted simultaneously on the surface of membrane and the biocompatibility of grafted membrane was investigated. There was no difference of permeability between the MTP and GMA-grafted and the original cellulose membrane. The permeation pathway for a solute whose molecular weight was above 10$^{4}$ is maintained after grafting on the surface of membrane. The cellulose membrane grafted with MTP and GMA effectively suppressed thrombogenicity for the rabbit blood. This effect became more clear with increasing the surface distribution of phospholipid polar groups.

  • The work was initiated to investigate the electrokinetic properties of a MF membrane using streaming potential measurement when oil emulsion was separated. The original and the surface modified PP membrane were examined by using flux and streaming potentials for the characterization of fouling phenomena of the PP membrane. The membrane surface was modified by a radiation grafting technique. The streaming potentials of the PP membranes were varied the charge distribution modifying by changing the pH, ionic strength, and concentrations the surfactants in oil emulsion. The shiftness to the more positive values of isoelectric point of the PP membrane was significant especially in the presence of surfactants or the surface modification.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the frequency of dehiscence bone defect on peri-implant and to compare the difference between resorbable membrane and nonresorbable membrane in bone regeneration on peri-implant. Amomg the patients, 22 patientswho have recieved an implant surgery at the department of Periodontics in Dankook University Dental Hospital showed implant exposure due to the dehiscence defect and 27 implants of these 22 patients were the target of the treatment. $Gore-Tex^{(R)}$ and $Bio-mesh^{(R)}$ were applied to the patients and treated them with antibiotics for five days both preoperatively and postoperatively. Reentry period was 26 weeks on average in maxilla and 14 weeks on average in mandible. The results were as follows : 1. Dehiscence bone defect frequently appeared in premolar in mandible and anterior teeth in maxilla respectively. 2. Among 27 cases, 2 membrane exposures were observed and in these two cases, regenerated area was decreased. 3. In non-resorbable membrane, bone surface area $9.25{\pm}4.84$ preoperatively and significantly increased to $11.48{\pm}7.52$ postoperatively.(P<0.05) 4. In resorbable membrane, bone surface area was $14.80{\pm}8.25$ preoperatively and meaningfully widened to $17.61{\pm}10.67$ postoperatively.(P<0.05) 5 . The increase of bone surface area in non-resorbable membrane was $2.23{\pm}3.38$ and the increase of bone surface area in resorbable membrane was $2.80{\pm}3.00$ ;therefore, there was no significant difference between these two membranes(P<0.05). This study implies that the surgical method using DFDB and membrane on peri-implant bone defect is effective in bone regeneration regardless the kind of the membrane, and a similar result was shown when a resorbable membrane was used.

  • In this study, response surface methodology (RSM) was performed in NF membrane process to evaluate the separation efficiency of membrane in the removal of salt and reactive dye by varying different variables such as pressure, temperature, pH, dye concentration and salt concentration. The significant level of both the main effects and the interaction were observed by analysis of variance (ANOVA) approach. Based on the statistical analysis, the results have provided valuable information on the relationship between these variables and the performances of membrane. The rejection of salt was found to be greatly influenced by pressure, pH and salt concentration whereas the dye rejection was relatively constant in between 96.22 and 99.43% regardless of the changes in the variables. The water flux on the other hand was found to be affected by the pressure and salt concentration. It is also found that the model predictions were in good agreement with the experimental data, indicating the validity of these models in predicting membrane performances prior to the real filtration process.

  • In the study, aeroelastic behaviors and aerodynamic performances of flexible airfoil in low Reynolds number environment are evaluated. To facilitate the present study, flexible airfoil in modeled through attaching massless membrane in portion of the upper CLARK-Y airfoil surface, which is often proposed low Reynolds number airfoil. The behavior of membrane in governed by aerodynamic forces and membrane equilibrium equation. Nondimensional parameter deducted by nondimensionalizing the membrane equilibrium equation, which represents the interaction between fluid and membrane has a great influence on membrane aeroelastic behavior. Changing the starting point of the membrane is conducted on aerodynamic performances. As a result, the value of nondimensional parameter should almost linearly increase according to moving the starting point of the membrane surface toward the trailing edge.

  • Surface of hydrophobic polyethylene membrane was modified to become hydrophilic by ion beam irradiation. Submerged membrane filtration reactors contained pristine membrane or surface-modified membrane and the influent to reactors was pickled radish wastewater. The objectives of this study was to investigate the variation of flux and pressure and the characteristics of pollutant removal such as organics, suspended solids and nutrients with time. The result of experiments using intermittent pristine membrane showed the occurrence of severe fouling by increasing permeate pressure rapidly in case of pickled radish wastewater but in synthetic wastewater, this phenomenon was not occurred. In experiments of variation flux after chemical cleaning and water cleaning in pristine membrane, chemical cleaning must be necessary for renewals of pollutant membrane. Performance of intermittent operation is higher than that of continuous operation. Reaching fouling time in the case of surface-modified membrane is 6 times as long as pristine membrane. According this reason, replacement expense of surface-modified membrane could be 1/6 of that of pristine membrane. Effluent from this process was relatively good water quality and performance in the removal efficiency of SS, nitrogen and phosphorus was particularly higher.

  • Recently, membrane can be prepared by two methods, phase inversion and electrospinning techniques. Phase inversion technique is a conventional but commercially preparation membrane. The most versatile of preparation in this technique is immersion of the cast film into nonsolvent bath, causing dense top layer with a finger-like pattern in the sub layer membrane. The membrane pore size getting from phase inversion is in the range of micro or submicrometer. As a result, it can be used as microfiltration and ultrafiltration applications. A new technique, electrospinning, is introduced for membrane preparation. Nonwoven nanofibrous mat or nanofibrous membrane is obtained. In this technique, electrostatic charge is introduced to the solution jet, causing a thin fiber with high surface area; hence it can be used in the applications where high surface area-to-volume or length-to-diameter ratios are required. Moreover, the pore size can be controlled by controlling the time of electrospinning. Hence, it can be used as a filter for filtering microparticles as well as nanoparticles.

  • The membrane fouling is an important problem for FO applied to the radioactive wastewater treatment. The FO fouling characteristics for simulated radioactive wastewater treatment was investigated. On-line cleaning by deionized (DI) water and external cleaning by ultrasound and HCl were applied for the fouled membrane. The effectiveness and foulant removing amount by each-step cleaning were evaluated. The membrane fouling was divided into three stages. Co(II), Sr(II), Cs(I), Na(I) were all found deposited on both active and support layers of the membrane surface, resulting in membrane surface became rougher and more hydrophobic, which increased membrane resistance. On-line cleaning by DI water recovered the water flux to 69%. HCl removed more foulants than ultrasound.

  • The effects of bipolar interface formed on the surface of cation-exchange membrane on water splitting phenomena were investigated. Results showed that the formation of immobilized bipolar interface resulted in significant water splitting during electrodialysis. In particular, the immobilized bipolar interface was easily created on the cation-exchange membrane surface in the electrodialytic systems where multivalent cations served as an electrolyte. Multivalent cations with low solubility product resulted in violent water splitting because they were easily precipitated on the membrane surface in hydroxide form. Therefore, the bipolar interface consisting of H- and OH-affinity groups were formed on the membrane-solution interface. Apparently, water splitting was largely activated with the help of strong electric fields generated between the metal hydroxide layer and fixed charge groups on the membrane surface. Likewise, the accumulation of large molecular counter ions on the membrane surface led to the formation of a fixed bipolar structure that could cause significant water splitting in the over-limiting current region. Therefore, the prevention of the immobilization of bipolar interface on the membrane surface is very essential in improving the process efficiency in a high-current operation.

  • In this study, we prepared nanofiltration membrane by applying the interfacial polymerization method as a way of manufacturing composite membranes. We have examined the effects of various preparation factors such as monomer concentration and composition, thermal curing condition, post treatment condition. In addition to preparation conditions, we also monitored the effects of operation conditions such as feed solution concentration and operation pressure on the permeation properties of the resulting nanofiltration membrane. We intended to increase the permeation rate of nanofiltration membrane by the enlargement of effective surface area using additives during interfacial polymerization step. With increasing the monomer concentration, membrane permeation rate are decreased with maintaining almost constant rejection. With respect to curing condition, with increasing the curing temperature both permeation rate and rejection are decreased. With increasing the ratio of MPD in amino monomer composition, permeation rate decreased drastically with high rejection. With increasing the feed solution concentration, both permeation rate and rejection decreased. Both permeation rates and rejection increased with increasing the operating pressure. Nanofiltration membrane have higher surface roughness with increasing additive concentration in the case of using MPD contained amine composition than using piperazine alone. Permeation rates are much lower than the nanofiltration membrane prepared by piperazine.
