Membrane separation process is an important technique utilized for various applications. This separation process proceeds due to a driving force such as concentration gradient, pressure or electrical potential gradient etc. Pervaporation is one of the separation process based on solution-diffusion mechanism. The pressure of the permeate side is reduced by creating vacuum and separation is driven due to pressure difference. Purity of the fuel or chemical like ethanol or isopropyl alcohol are improved by dehydration process through porous zeolite membrane. These membranes have high thermal, chemical, mechanical stability. This review is classified mainly into two different sections: Ethanol and bio-oil dehydration by zeolite membrane.
This paper deals with the separation of MTBE-methanol mixtures using crosslinked Poly(vinyl alcohol)(PVA) membranes with sulfur-succinic acid(SSA) as a crosslinking agent by pervaporation and vapor permeation technique. The operating temperatures, methanol concentration in feed mixtures, and SSA concentrations in PVA membranes were varied to investigate the separation performance of PVA/SSA membranes and the optimum separation characteristics by pervaporation and vapor permeation. And also, for PVA/SSA membranes, the swelling measurements were carried out to study the transport phenomena. The swelling measurements were carried out for pure MTBE and methanol, and MTBE/methanol=90/10, 80/20 mixtures using PVA/SSA membranes with varying SSA compositions. There are two factors of the membrane network and the hydrogen bonding. In pervaporation separation was also carried out for MTBE/methanol=90/10, 80/20 mixtures at various temperatures. The sulfuric acid group in SSA took an important role in the membrane performance. The crosslinking effect might be over the hydrogen bonding effect due to the sulfuric acid group at 3 and 5% SSA membranes, and this two factors act vice versa on 7% SSA membrane. In this case, the 5% SSA membrane shows the highest separation factor of 2,095 with the flux of 12.79g/㎡$.$hr for MTBE/methanol=80/20 mixtures at 30$^{\circ}C$ which this mixtures show near the azeotopic composition. Compared to pervaporation, vapor permeation showed less flux and similar separation factor. In this case, the flux decreased significantly because of compact structure and the effect of hydrogen bonding. In vapor permeation, density or concentration of methanol in vaporous feed is lower than that of methanol in liquid feed, as a result, the hydrogen bonding portion between the solvent and the hydroxyl group in PVA is reduced in vapor permeation. In this case, the 7% SSA membranes shows the highest separation factor of 2,187 with the flux of 4.84g/㎡$.$hr for MTBE/methanol=80/20 mixtures at 30$^{\circ}C$.

The development of separation technology is an important research subject as is clear from its role in the Japanese government's research and development program for basic technology for the next generation(1981~1990). Japan is poor not only in mineral resources but also in energy resources and if a sudden change occurs in oil producing facility or an accident occurs in a nuclear power plant, then energy policy must undergo changes and economic foundations may collapse. Japan has already experienced this. Although, oil prices are stable at present and Japan can import oil at low cost due to the yen appreciation, Japan needs to promote development work for any new energy crisis that may come in the future. This has been the motive for gas separation membrane development in Japan. The study of gas permeation through polymer membranes, which is the basis for membranes for gas separation, at Japanese universities began many years ago, but interest in membranes for gas separation was aroused mainly by the Government. The development of gas separation membranes in Japan started with membranes for oxygen separation on an industrial scale.
Polyethersulfone (PES) asymmetric membranes for gas separation were prepared by dry/wet phase inversion method and their separation properties for CO$_2$ and N$_2$ gases were investigated. The effects of important variables such as composition of casting solution and evaporation time in preparation of asymmetric gas membrane on membrane morphology and the separation properties were analyzed and the optimum condition of membrane preparation was established. To compensate the defects like pinholes existed on skin layer of the membrane prepared, the membranes were coated with silicone resin. By comparing separation properties after coating with those before coating, we found that the coating of silicone resin was effective to enhance the separation properties. The casting solution mainly used in this study consisted of PES, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, acetone, ethanol and distilled water was used as coagulation agent. It was shown that the selectivity for CO$_2$/N$_2$ was getting higher but the permeability decreases, as the contents of PES and volatile organic solvent and evaporation time increased. The selectivity for CO$_2$/N$_2$ and permeability of CO$_2$ of the membrane prepared under the optimum condition were found to be 61 and 21 GPU, respectively.

In this research, polysulfone hollow fiber membrane was used to recover $CO_2$ which is one of greenhouse gases from flue gas stream being emitted after the combustion of fossil fuels. The prerequisite requirement is to design the membrane process producing high-purity $CO_2$ from flue gas. For separation of $CO_2$, a membrane module and flue gas containing 10% carbon dioxide was used. The effects of operating conditions such as pressure, temperature, feed gas composition and multi-stage membrane on separation performance were examined at various stage cuts. Higher operating pressure and temperature increased carbon dioxide concentration and recovery ratio in permeate. Recovery ratio and separation efficiency increased if a higher content of $CO_2$ injection gas composition. Three-stage membrane system was producing a 95% $CO_2$ with 90% recovery from flue gas. The separation efficiency of three-stage membrane system was higher than one-stage system.

Gas separation membranes have been developed for decades in various areas to replace the conventional processes. Membrane processes for gas separation have many advantages of energy saving, compact size, and easy scale-up. Nowadays, gas separation processes is widely spreaded in nitrogen generating system, hydrogen generating system, membrane dryer, on board inert gas generating system, natural gas purification, biogas purification and fuel cells. Carbon dioxide separation process using membrane would be a strong candidate of carbon dioxide capturing process. In order to broaden the scope of application of gas separation membranes, development of new materials which can overcome the borderline of Robeson's plot should be necessary, so that many researchers and companies are trying to develop the new materials like polymers containing cardo and spiro group and PIMs (polymers for intrinsic microporosity).
In this study, the alternative to the energy-intensive conventional vacuum distillation process, an eco-friendly and energy-efficient pervaporation separation was employed in 1,2 hexane diol/water (HDO/water) mixture. The crosslinked PVA-glutaraldehyde was coated inside the alumina hollow fiber membrane (Al-HF). In the HDO/IPA pervaporation separation, optimization of the membrane concerning PVA/GA ratio, curing temperature, and pervaporation operating condition were performed. In the long-term stability test, the sustainable pervaporation separation performance giving flux in the range of 1.90~2.16 kg/m2h, and water content in permeate was higher than 99.5% (separation factor = 68) was obtained from the PVA/GA (molar ratio = 0.08, curing temperature = 80℃) coated Al-HF membrane from HDO/water (25/75, w/w, %) mixture at 40℃. Therefore, this work provides potential and inspiration for PVA-based membranes to mitigate excessive energy requirements in HDO/water separation by pervaporation.

The asymmetric hollow fiber membranes were prepared by the wet spining of polyetherimide dope solution and the effect of hollow fiber structures on the permeation characteristics of carbon dioxide and nitrogen gases through these membrane were investigated. As the concentration of the $\gamma$-butyrolactone (GBL) in dope solution, acting as a swelling agent was increased, the structure of hollow fiber was changed from the finger to sponge type. The permeabilities of gases (CO$_{2}$, N$_{2}$) through these membrane were measured over the wide range of pressure under different temperature. The effect of water vapor on the permeabilities of gases was also investigated. The measured permeabilities showed the different characteristics depending on the structure of membranes. It was found that the flow through the pores were dominant over the polymers matrix. Blocking effect by water vapor in the pores of skin layer greatly improved the ideal separation factor of carbon dioxide/nitrogen.

The cryogenic, pressure swing adsorption and membrane methods have been used to separate air into nitrogen and oxygen. The air separation membrane is made of the polymers, of which manufacturing process is complicate and it causes a little high production cost. Polymer membrane has temperature limit in usage and low durability even at moderate temperature. Therefore, inorganic membranes have been studied for years. As formation of unit alumino-silicate membrane, unit cells of membrane were made with a few coating methods. In this study the dipping of substrate into sols, application of vacuum to the opposite side of substrate with coating and rotating of the substrate in the sols were found as good coating memthods to make a uniform coating and to control the thickness of membrane. The membrane coats were examined by SEM and XRD. The sample ESZl-1 was compared with those of samples that prepared by another method. The present developed coating methods could be applied to the various types of zeolite membrane formation, that is A- X-, Y- ZSM- and MCM-types of membranes. Also these membrane forming methods could be applied to formation of catalyst absorbed zeolite membrane, of which zeolite absorb the catalytic metals. The product obtained from these coating methods could be applied to the industrial gas and liquid phase catalytic reaction and separation processes.
