  • The internal reflux effect on dialysis through the retentate phase of a countercurrently cross-flow rectangular module is investigated. Theoretical analysis of mass transfer in cross-flow devices with or without recycling is analogous to heat transfer in cross-flow heat exchangers. In contrast to a device without reflux, considerable mass transfer is achievable if cross-flow dialyzers are operated with reflux, which provides an increase in fluid velocity, resulting in a reduction in mass-transfer resistance. It is concluded that reflux can enhance mass transfer, especially for large flow rate and feed-concentration operated under high reflux ratio.

  • In this study, it was performed using submerged nonwoven bioreactor(SNBR) for removal of organic matter, nitrogen and phosphate under different aeration intervals(intermittent aeration). We applied the SNBR at the cheap nonwoven fiber module instead of the expensive membrane. The SUBR was mainly made up of an activated sludge reactor and a transverse flow nonwoven module, with an innovative configuration being in application between them. In case of sewage, the aeration conditions experimented consist of continuous aeration and 60min/60min, 120min/60min, 120min/120min of aeration/nonaeration time intervals, respectively. In case of landfill leachate, the intermittent aeration condition was 120min/120min at aeration/nonaeration. Consequently, a high COD removal rate (about 94%) was achieved in sewage and leachate. Although nutrient removal rate was relatively high without any additional chemicals.

  • The purpose of this work was to assess and quantify whether the beneficial effects in long-term gas exchange at exciting frequency were obtained at different frequencies as well and then to develop a vibrating intravascular lung assist device(VIVLAD), for Patients suffering from acute respiratory distress syndrome(ARDS) or chronic respiratory problems. We investigate the optimal condition of the frequency band excited with new vibrator at state of limit hemolysis when blood hemolysis came to through a membrane vibration action. The experimental design and procedures were given for a device used to assess the effectiveness of membrane vibrations. Quantitative experimental measurements were performed to evaluate the performance of the device . and to identify membrane vibration dependence on blood hemolysis. We developed an analytical solution for the hydrodynamics of flow through a bundle of sinusoidally vibrated hollow fibers that is used to provide some insight into how wall vibrations might enhance the performance of the VIVLAD. In the result, it was measured that the effect of various excited frequencies in gas transfer rate and hemolysis from the maximum gas transfer rate at no vibration when the maximum gas transfer rates showed at module type 6, module type 6 consisted of 675 hollow fiber membranes The maximum oxygen transfer rate was caused by the occurrence of maximum amplitude and transfer of vibration to hollow fiber membranes when it was excited by the frequency band of 7Hz at each blood flow rate. because this frequency became the End mode resonance frequency of the flexible in blood flow. Also, when module type 6 was excited at an excited frequency of 7Hz. blood hemolysis was low. Therefore, we decided that the limit of hemolysis frequency is 7Hz . because maximum amplitude occurred at this frequency.

  • We studied a continuous production of ethanol by Saccharomyces cerevisiae in a hollow fiber membrane bioreactor which consisted of 50 polypropylene fibers and 3 teflon fibers. The produced $CO_2$ was removed through the teflon fibers and excess biomass was removed through the shell side. We obtained the cell and ethanol concentrations of 266g/L and 205g/L based on the shell-side volume. A nitrogen deficient medium resulted in too low an ethanol productivity to be applied to a practical process.

  • The predicting equations for mass transfer rate in cross-flow rectangular dialyzers with double flow and recycle, have been derived by mass balances. The recycling operation has two conflicting effects. One is the desirable effect of the increase in fluid velocity, resulting in an increased mass transfer coefficient. The other is the undesirable effect of the reduction in concentration difference due to remixing, resulting in decreased mass-transfer driving force. In contrast a single-pass device without recycling, considerable improvement in mass transfer is achieved if the cross-flow rectangular dialyzer of same size is operated with double pass and external recycling. It is concluded that recycle can enhance mass transfer, especially for larger reflux ratio.

  • This paper describes the preliminary study on the development of multi-stage membrane demonstration plant for removal of carbon dioxide from flue gas stream being emitted from LNG boiler in thermal power generation plant. The prerequisite requirement is to design and develop the membrane process producing a $99\%\;CO_2$ with $90\%$ recovery from LNG flue gas of 1,000 $Nm^3$/day. Asymmetric polyethersulfone hollow fiber membranes and membrane modules developed in this laboratory[1] were used in this study. Using the permeation data for the hollow fiber membranes, modelling on the membrane module and multi-stage membrane process was done to meet the requirement condition of the process design. The effects of the operating pressure of feed and permeate side and feed concentration on $CO_2$ purity and recovery were investigated experimentally with the developed hollow fiber modules. These experimental results matched well with theoretical modelling results.

  • A pilot test was carried out to investigate the long term operation characteristics of Microfiltration (MF) system as a pretreatment for seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) processes for two years. A commercialized MF module with pressurized operation type was used to filter seawater to remove particles which can foul reverse osmosis (RO) membrane. Silt Density Index (SDI) values of filtered seawater by the MF system were ranged from 0.14 to 1.79, which meet the SDI standard for RO feed water as depicted in previous literatures. Although the tested seawater is quite clean (i.e., dissolved organic cabon (DOC) concentration and turbidity were about 1 mg/l and less than 1 NTU, respectively) enough not to foul the MF membrane, steep increase in trans-membrane pressure (TMP) with a constant flux were observed over a whole operation period. A set of operation and water analysis data implies that the steep increase in TMP was resulted from iron and maganese fouling by the combination of metal corrosion by seawater and oxidation state by aeration and residual chlorine.
