Experimental Study for Keeping a Melting Pool in a Waste Pyrolysis Melting Incinerator (폐기물 열분해 용융소각로의 용탕 유지를 위한 실험적 연구)

  • The large amount of energy is consumed in a process for keeping the high temperature melting pool. For this reason, in addition to the wastes input to keep the high temperature melting pool, it is necessary for an auxiliary fuel and LOx to throw into the melting pool. So in this study, using a new melting furnace system, the experiments to keep the melting pool with minimal energy without throwing an auxiliary fuel and LOx was carried out. Also it is hoped that the results of the experiment will be available to analyze keeping a melting pool and behavior in a melting furnace.

Natural convection induced by free surface heat flux and temperature difference between left and right walls in glass melting furnace (유리용융로에서 자유표면 열유속과 좌우벽면 온도차에 의한 자연대류)

  • A numerical study on natural convection induced by free surface heat flux and cold left and hot right walls in glass melting furnaces has been performed. A function of heat flux derived from the combustion environments of actual glass melting furnace is applied to thermal boundary condition at free surface. Fundamentally there exist two flow cells in cavity (left counterclockwise one and right clockwise one). The effects of heat flux and Rayleigh number are investigated through two-dimensional steady-state assumption. The convection strength of two flow cell located in left region continuously increases. In the mean time the strength of flow cell in right region increases and then decreases. Critical Rayleigh number in which two flow cells take place above and below show linear dependence on the free surface heat flux. To maintain the traditional flow pattern (left and right flow cells) in glass melting furnace, Rayleigh number is recommended to be below 10$^{5}$ .

  • Recently, aluminium usage in the automobile industry has been increased cause of its lightweight. The aluminium has a melting-solidification process in producing line and another melting process was needed in manufacturing process. Two times of melting process for making ingot and casting not only makes the loss of time and money but contaminates the air with Sox, Nox. For this reason, the holding furnace with laminated adiabatic material was developed. This holding furnace can deliver the molten aluminium directly to the industry needing molten aluminium. Recent holding furnace has above $15^{\circ}C/h$ of cooling rate and that causes solidification of molten aluminium. The ANSYS software was used to analysis the heat transfer. The adiabatic materials were laminated with optimized arrangement and holding furnace shape was changed with optimized modelling by ANSYS analysis for reducing the cooling rate of molten aluminium in holding furnace.

  • The main objective of this study is to analyze the heat transfer characteristics in the electric melting furnace. Local temperatures are measured at various location in the furnace using the B-type thermocouples. In this paper, the numerical simulation was performed using the ANSYS software, and compared with experimental data. Mathematical heat transfer model for the prediction of temperature distribution has been developed by considering the thermal radiation among heating element, crucible and insulating materials. The results show that the temperature distributions predicted by the numerical simulation agree with experimental results comparatively.

Experimental study on combustion characteristics of oxy-fuel glass melting furnace (순산소를 이용한 유리 용해로의 연소특성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • The results of a series of experiments executed by using two pilot-scale oxy-fuel burners are presented. The oxy-fuel burners are designed for maximum capacity of 50,000kcal/hr, 200,000kcal/hr and installed in the test furnace. The effects of turn-down ratio, excess oxygen ratio, nozzle exit velocity, injection angle, and swirl vane angle on the combustion characteristic are investigated. Temperature distributions are measured using R-type and Molybdenum sheathed C-type thermocouple at various points of the flame. The results showed that maximum temperature and mean temperature increase with the increase of turn-down ratio and momentum. The maximum flame temperature was increased about 35% compared to the case of equivalent air operated condition. In addition, optimum burner type, excess oxygen ratio and nozzle characteristics are obtained for this oxy-fuel glass melting furnace.

  • Glass melting process is influenced by both control and observation factors, where control factors include quantity and mixing ratio of raw material, the amount of fuel and air in-take. Further observation factors include temperature and pressure at each step of process inside glass melting furnace. Ambient Control is an effective means to eliminate complications from excessive variation among raw materials, or external disturbance from wide fluctuation of environment around equipments. Ambient Control uses both control and observation factors mentioned above. This study suggests an effective Proactive Control System that can enable genuine 4M standardization in glass melting furnace by applying Ambient Control.

  • In this study, the power basic units to produce cast iron by using the press and shredded scrap are compared in 16t/h low-frequency induction melting furnace. Charging the shredded scrap instead of the press scrap was confirmed that the power basic unit is improved by about 5%. The energy characteristics according to the shape and size of scrap steel and the effect of the furnace size were investigated. Finally, the strategy to improve the utilization of this technology was proposed.

  • The characteristics of the metal melting and radionuclide distribution of the radioactive has been investigated in a lab-scale arc furnace. The slag former based on the constituents of silica, calcium oxide, aluminum oxide, borate and calcium fluoride additions was used for melting of the stainless and carbon steel. In the melting of the stainless steel, the amount of slag formation increased with an increase of the concentration of the slag former. But the effects of the slag basicity on the amount of stag formation showed a local maximum value of the slag formation with an increase of the basicity index in the melting of the stainless steel as well as in the melting of the carbon steel. With an increase of the amount of slag former addition, the trends of the cobalt distribution into the ingot and the stag depended on the kind of slag former used in the melting of the stainless steel while the effect of the slag basicity on the distribution of the cobalt was not clarified in the melting of carbon steel. Tn the melting of the carbon steel, the strontium was captured at up to $50\%$ into the slag phase. Cesium was completely eliminated from the melt of the stainless steel as well as the carbon steel and distributed to the dust phase.

Studies on syngas production and gas engine generation of soild waste gasification in the fixed bed gasification melting furnace (고정층 가스화 용융로에서의 고상폐기물 가스화 합성가스 생산 및 가스엔진 발전 연구)

  • The 3 ton/day-scale pilot plant consists of compressor, feed channel, fixed bed type gasification & melting furnace, quench scrubber, demister, flare stack and gas engine. Syngas composition of gasification using the 35.50(waste I), 4.34%(wasteII) moisture-containing solid waste showed waste I CO 25-35%, 20-40% hydrogen, waste II 25-35%, 20-30% hydrogen. Gasification melting furnace was operated $1,500{\sim}1,600^{\cdot}C$. Gas engine was generated $35{\sim}40$ kW as waste gasification syngas.
