  • The effects of alloying elements added on the microstructure and high temperature oxidation behavior of the electro-slag remelted Fe-22Cr-5Al alloy were investigated. The amount of casting defect was makedly reduced by the electro-slag remelting. The electro-slag remelted ingot had a directionally solidified structure and cleaner surface than that of air-melted one. The high temperature oxidation reststance was greatly improved by the addition of Be and Zr.

  • This study dealt with the influence of the replacement ratio of rapidly-chilled steel slag on fluidity and compressive strength of unsaturated polyester polymer concretes. The rapidly-chilled steel slag used in this study, a by-product which is produced by refining pig iron during the manufacture of steel, was controled by a air-jet method which rapidly cools substance melted at a high temperature. Experimental results show that fluidity and compressive strength of unsaturated polyester polymer concretes increase with increasing replacement ratio of rapidly-chilled steel slag. Use of rapidly-chilled steel slag was found to be effective for improving fluidity and compressive strength of rapidly-chilled steel slag.

A Study on Fume Formation Ratio on Flux Cored Arc Welding Process (플럭스 코어드 아크 용접 공정에서의 흄 형성량에 관한 연구)

  • A study was conducted for the effects of input energy on fume formation ratios based on electrode(FFR$_{electrode}(g/kg_{electrode})),\;deposited\;metal(FFR_{weld}(g/kg_{weld}))\;and\;slag(FFR_{slag}(g/kg_{slag}))\;at\;CO_2$ flux cored arc welding on stainless steel. Experiments were run in well designed welding fume box. Six types of flux cored wires were used and three levels of current and voltages were given. The measured values of $FFR_{electrode},\;FFR_{weld},\;FFR_{slag}\;are\;7.90{\pm}1.47\;g/kg_{electrode},\;9.18{\pm}1.65\;g/kg_{\electrode},\;71.8{\pm}24.2\;g/kg_{slag}$ respectively. Fume formation ratios are not increased dramatically by input energy because of simultaneous increasing of melted electrodes, deposited metal and slag. The results indicate that the test of fume formation ratios in the research on production of low fume welding wire can be run at the fixed condition of input energy rather than various condition.

  • In this study, metallurgical grade (MG) silicon with 99% purity produced by arc furnace process was systematically investigated for slag refining. The most problematic impurities to remove from MG silicon are boron (B) and phosphorus (P). To remove B and P from MG-silicon, we used synthetic slag in the molten state. MG-silicon with synthetic slag of CaO, $SiO_2$, and $CaF_2$ was melted using by high-frequency induction furnace with electrical output of 50kW. Specimens prepared by various refining process conditions(holding time, mixture ratio) were inspected by combined analysis of ICP-MS and XRF. With this approach, B has been reduced to <5ppm, P to <1ppm and other impurities to 0.1~0.2% except for Calcium. Calcium has been increased from 17ppm to 1500ppm. Problem of calcium contamination will be resolved by additional refining processes.

Mineral Properties of Molten Clinker with Blast Furnace Slag (고로 슬래그를 사용한 용융클링커의 광물학적 특성)

  • Raw mix of molten clinker was fabricated using blast furnace slag as starting material. Raw mix was melted at 1620$^{\circ}C$ for molten clinker fabrication. It was found that molten clinker contained alite and belite equivalent to OPC clinker mineral by optical microscope and SEM. The size of alite was 10~50 ${\mu}m$ and that of belite was 20~80 ${\mu}m$. This result thought to be attributed low $Al_2O_3$ content and cooling condition. Interstitial phase increased with blast furnace slag content and gehlenite was formed by the condition of LSF and SM. So raw mix with 27~41% blast furnace slag could be converted into cement clinker by appropriate choice of melting andcooling methods in this study.

  • Iron and slag were prepared by melting mixed industrial wastes in an induction furnace. The wastes were steel can, limestone sludge, waste foundry sand, coal fly ash, and glasses. The effects of their mixing ratio on the charactenstics of the meltcd slag were investigated. The wastes were melted to slag under the constant basicity of 1.2. It was found that the major phases of the slag were P-C,S and C,AS and then ratio was determined by the mixing ratio af waste materials. The recovery of iron was about 93-95%. The feasibility of using the slag as the aggregate was confirmed by thc elution and campression tests.

  • In this study, the solubility of Cu, which is a main metal component of wasted PCB, in $CaO-SiO_2-Al_2O_3-MgO$ slag system was investigated. Each 20 grams of Cu chips and the quaternary slag manufactured was placed in an carbon crucible and melted for 10 hours in the temperature between 1673 K and 1825 K to confirm the equilibrium state. The oxygen partial pressure was controlled by the ratio of CO and Ar gas in the range of $10^{-17.23}$ to $10^{-15.83}$ atm. The concentration of Cu in the slag increased with increasing oxygen partial pressure, slag basicity, and MgO content in the slag. The concentration of Cu in the slag decreased with increasing temperature. The Cu dissolution reaction in the slag is an exothermic reaction.

  • During steelmaking in EAF, recycled scraps is used as a main material, melted by arc, and electricity use as a main energy. Slag foaming is an important technology for reducing electrical energy. CO gas generated by the reaction between injection carbon and (FeO), [C] and injection {$O_2$}. CO gas generated by this reaction is collected in slag, resulted in slag foaming. In general, the carbon materials used in the EAF process is anthracite and coke. This study investigated the effects of the carbon materials used on slag foaming in the steelmaking process. As a result of this study, the slag foaming height is increased by cokes rather than anthracite, and with an increase in the amount of particles samller than $500{\mu}m$. Based on these results, the application to the operation resulted in increase of slag forming height, reduction of injection carbon, and reduction of electrical energy.

  • It is very important in the view point of resource recycling to recover valuable metals such as copper and tin from waste electric and electronic scrap. The waste electric and electronic scrap contains significant amounts of copper, tin, and so on. In this study, a new process for extracting copper and tin contained in the waste electric and electronic scrap using waste copper slag which is generated from the melting furnace of copper smelter was presented. Advantage of the proposed process is to reuse waste copper slag instead of new fluxes as slag formatives. In each experiment, the waste electric and electronic scrap and waste copper slag were melted inputting suitable amount of CaO as an additional flux. Up to 95% of copper and 85% of tin in the raw material were extracted in a Cu-Fe-Sn alloy phase.

  • This study investigated the influence of the viscoelastic property of slag when producing glass fiber, MFS631 with 60% of manganese slag, 30% of steel slag, and 10% of silica stone. To fabricate the MFS631 glass bulk, slag materials were placed in an alumina crucible, melted at $1,550^{\circ}C$ for 2 h, and then annealed at $600^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. It was found that glass is non-crystalline through X-ray diffraction analysis. MFS631 fiber was produced at speed in the range of 100~300 rpm at $1,150^{\circ}C$. The loss modulus (G") and storage modulus (G') of the produced glass fiber were evaluated at high temperatures. G' and G" of MFS631 were greater than $893^{\circ}C$, and the modulus value was 136,860 pa. This is similar to the results of a general E-glass fiber graph. Therefore, it was concluded that its spinnability is similar to that of E-glass fiber; therefore, it can be commercialized.
