  • Laser aided direct metal deposition (LADMD) process offers the ability to make a metal component directly from 3-D CAD dimensions. A 3-D object can be formed by repeating laser cladding layer by layer. The key of the build-up mechanism is the effective control of powder delivery and laser power to be irradiated into the melt-pool. A feedback control system using optical sensors is introduced to control laser power and powder mass flow rate. Using H13 tool steel and $CO_2$ laser system, comprehensive analysis are executed to test the efficiency of the system. In addition, the dimensional characteristics of directed deposited material are investigated with the parameters of deposition thickness, laser power, traverse speed and powder mass flow rate.

  • Variable weld bead penetrations related to the base metal chemistry of stainless steels in GTA welding have been under constant investigations due to their industrial implications. It has been proposed that among other elements, the sulfur content of steels determines the weld pool geometry, particularly its penetration. It is suggested that the surface tension temperature gradient of steels becomes positive with appropriate dosing in sulfur and results in inward melt flow, propitious for deeper welds. However, the chemistry of industrial steels is complex due to the presence of multiple minor elements either deliberately added or remnant impurity traces. With this in view, investigations on 41 austenitic and nine martensitic stainless steels were carried to see if there existed any possible relation between the weld profile and some of the designated elements. The results suggest no direct correlation between sulfur or any other major or trace element and weld penetration. At first glance the results are contradictory to what is often asserted.

  • In this paper, the arc beam is considered as a moving disc heat source with a pseudo-Gaussian distribution of heat intensity. The solution for temperature distribution on welds is derived by using the image heat source method and the superposition method. It is general solution in that it can determine the temperature-rise distribution in and around the arc beam heat source, as well as the width and depth of the melt pool (MP) and the heat-affected zone (HAZ) in welding short lengths, where quasi-stationary conditions may not have been established. As a comparative study, the results of this analytical approach has been compared with that of the finite-element modeling. As a result, The theoretical analysis presented here has shown good consistency and is more time/cost-effective method compared with FEM.

  • Laser melting problems with deformed substrates are investigated by axisymmetric numerical simulations. Source-based method is used to solve the energy equation, and the momentum equations are solved in the liquid domain with SIMPLER algorithm. Using a laser beam with a top-hat heat flux distribution, this study is performed to examine the effect of surface deformation, beam power density and surface tension force on the melt pool during laser melting. Surface temperature decreases with increasing surface deformation, while surface velocity increases. It is found that surface deformation, beam power density and surface tension force have a very significant effect on heat transfer and fluid flow during laser melting.

  • This paper presents the results of the TEXAS-V computer code simulations of FARO L-14, L-28, and L-33. The old break-up model and new break-up model are tested to compare the respective simulations of each. As these experimental data sets cover a wide range of ambient pressures, sub-cooling of the water pool, and the melt jet diameters, the results of the simulations will be beneficial in assessing the TEXAS-V code's capability to predict the steam explosion phenomena in a prototypical reactor case. The current model was found to have some deficiencies, and the modules for the fragmentation, the equation of state, and the interfacial area for each flow regime in TEXAS-V were improved for the simulation of FARO L28 and FARO L-33.

  • Magnesium alloys are potentially useful as structural materials due to higher strength/weight ratio, heat conductivity and recyclability compared to other alloys. These alloys have attracted the interest of modern manufacturing such as the automobile, computer, communication and consumer electronic appliances industries. Hence welding techniques are required to be developed for these applications. Laser are known to be an excellent tool for them. This paper presents the laser weldability of AZ31 magnesium alloy with CW Nd:YAG laser. The low viscosity and surface tension of the melt pool make magnesium more difficult to weld than steel. As a result of this study, optimal process parameters could be obtained without weld defects. Also it was certain that cutting methods had influence on butt weldability.

  • Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) launched an intermediate scale steam explosion experiment named "Test for Real Corium Interaction with water (TROI)" using reactor material to investigate whether the molten reactor material would lead to energetic steam explosion when interacted wish cold water at low pressure. The melt-water interaction experiment is performed in a pressure vessel with the multi-dimensional fuel and water pool geometry. The novel concept of cold crucible technology, where powder of the reactor material in a water-cooled cafe is heated by high frequency induction, is firstly implemented for the generation of molten fuel. In this paper, the lest facility and cold crucible technology are introduced and the results or the first series of tests were discussed. The 5 kg of molten ZrO$_2$jet was poured into the 67cm deep water pool at 30 ∼ 95 $\^{C}$. Either spontaneous steam explosions or quenching was observed. The morphology of debris and pressure wave profiles clearly indicate the differences between the two cases.

  • Molten Core Concrete Interaction (MCCI) is a complex process characterized by concrete ablation and volatile generation; Thermal and solutal convection in a bubble-agitated melt; Physico-chemical evolution of the corium pool with a wide solidification range (of the order of 1000 K). Twelve experiments have been carried out in the VULCANO facility with prototypic corium and sustained heating. The dry oxidic corium tests have contributed to show that silica-rich concrete experience an anisotropic ablation. This unexpected ablation pattern is quite reproducible and can be recalculated, provided an empirical anisotropy factor is assumed. Dry tests with oxide and metal liquid phases have also yielded unexpected results: a larger than expected steel oxidation and unexpected topology of the metallic phase (at the bottom of the cavity and also on the vertical concrete walls). Finally, VULCANO has proved its interest for the study of mitigation solutions such as the COMET bottom flooding core catcher.

  • MAAP4 is a computer code that can simulate the response of a light water reactor power plant during severe accident sequences, including actions taken as part of accident management. The code quantitatively predicts the evolution of a severe accident starting from full power conditions given a set of system faults and initiating events through events such as core melt, reactor vessel failure, and containment failure. Furthermore, models are included in the code to represent the actions that could mitigate the accident by in-vessel cooling, external cooling of the reactor pressure vessel, or cooling the debris in containment. A key element tied to using a code like MAAP4 is an uncertainty analysis. The purpose of this paper is to present a MAAP4 based analysis to examine the sensitivity of a key parameter, in this case hydrogen production, to a set of model parameters that are related to a Level 2 PRA analysis. The Level 2 analysis examines those sequences that result in core melting and subsequent reactor pressure vessel failure and its impact on the containment. This paper identifies individual contributors and MAAP4 model parameters that statistically influence hydrogen production. Hydrogen generation was chosen because of its direct relationship to oxidation. With greater oxidation, more heat is added to the core region and relocation (core slump) should occur faster. This, in theory, would lead to shorter failure times and subsequent "hotter" debris pool on the containment floor.
