Microphone is the first link in the speech recognition system. Depending on its type and mounting position, the microphone can significantly distort the spectrum and affect the performance of the speech recognition system. In this paper, characteristics of the speech signal for different microphones and microphone distances are investigated both in time and frequency domains. In the time domain analysis, the average signal-to-noise ration is measure ration is measured for the database we collected depending on the microphones and microphone distances. Mel-frequency spectral coefficients and mel-frequency cepstrum are computed to examine the spectral characteristics. Analysis results are discussed with our findings, and the result of recognition experiments is given.
The distortion effects of microphones have been analyzed and compensated at mel-frequency feature domain. Unlike popular bias removal algorithms a linear transformation of mel-frequency spectrum is incorporated. Although a diagonal matrix transformation is sufficient for medium-quality microphones, a full-matrix transform is required for low-quality microphones with severe nonlinearity. Proposed compensation algorithms are tested with HTIMIT database, which resulted in about 5 percents improvements in recognition rate over conventional CMS algorithm.

Temperature change is one of the major environmental factors to influence human skin. However. the relationship between temperature and melanogenesis has received little attention. In the present study. we investigated the effects of temperature change including heat shock on melanogenesis using a mouse melanocyte cell line, Mel-Ab. Our results demonstrated that cells maintained at 37$^{\circ}C$ showed maximal melanin synthesis. (omitted)
In this paper we propose a method to improve the performance of the mel-cepstrum that is widely used in speech recognition. Typically, the met-cepstrum is obtained by critical band filters that have fixed center spacing and bandwidth. However different filter characteristics produce a different mel-cepstrum, resulting in a different performance. In this paper we analyze triangular-shaped and rectangular-shaped filters. By changing the characteristics of filters such as center frequency and bandwidth, we analyze the performance of the met-cepstrum. Then utilizing the simplex method, we propose a method to optimize the critical band filters. Using the dynamic time warping, we performed speaker independent recognition experiments with Korean digit words pronounced by 10 males and 10 females. Experiments show that the rectangular-shaped filters show good performance and the mel-cepstrum obtained by the optimized filters shows better performance than filters that have fixed center spacing and bandwidth.
Objectives : To characterize the antitumorigenic potential of three representative bee venom components, Melittin, Apamin, and Phospholipase A2, their effects on cell proliferation and apotosis of the human melanoma cell line SK-MEL-2 were analyzed using molecular biological approaches. Methodes & Results : To determine the doses of the drugs that do not induce cytotoxic damage to this cell line, cell viability was examined by MTT assay. While SK-MEL-2 cells treated with 0.5 - 2.0㎍/㎖ of each drug showed no recognizable cytotoxic effect, marked reductions of cell viability were detected at concentrations over 5.0㎍/㎖. [3H]thymidine incorporation assay for cell proliferation demonstrated that DNA replication of SK-MEL-2 cells is inhibited by Apamin and Phospholipase A2 in a dose-dependent manner. Consistent with this result, the cells were accumulated at the G1 phase of the cell cycle after treatment with Apamin and Phospholipase A2, whereas no detectable change in cell proliferation was identified by Melittin treatment. In addition, tryphan blue exclusion and flow cytometric analyses showed that all of these drugs can trigger apoptotic cell death of SK-MEL-2, suggesting that Melittin, Apamin, and Phospholipase A2 have antitumorigenic potential through the suppression of cell growth and/or induction of apoptosis. Qantitative RT-PCR analysis revealed that Apamin and Phospholipase A2 inhibit expression of growth-promoting genes such as c-Jun, c-Fos, and Cyciin D1. Furthermore, Phospholipase A2 induced tumor suppressors p53 and p21/Wafl. In addition, all three drugs were found to activate expression of a representative apoptosis-inducing gene Bax while expression of apoptosis-suppressing Bcl-2 and Bcl-XL genes was not changed. Taken together, this study strongly suggests that Metittin, Apamin, and Phosphalipase A2 may have antitumorigenic activities, which are associated with its growth-inhibiting and/or apoptosis-inducing potentials.

In this paper, we propose wav-U-Net to improve speech enhancement in heavy noisy environments, and it has implemented three principal techniques. First, as input data, we use 128 modified Mel-scale filter banks which can reduce computational burden instead of 512 frequency bins. Mel-scale aims to mimic the non-linear human ear perception of sound by being more discriminative at lower frequencies and less discriminative at higher frequencies. Therefore, Mel-scale is the suitable feature considering both performance and computing power because our proposed network focuses on speech signals. Second, we add a simple ResNet as pre-processing that helps our proposed network make estimated speech signals clear and suppress high-frequency noises. Finally, the proposed U-Net model shows significant performance regardless of the kinds of noise. Especially, despite using a single channel, we confirmed that it can well deal with non-stationary noises whose frequency properties are dynamically changed, and it is possible to estimate speech signals from noisy speech signals even in extremely noisy environments where noises are much lauder than speech (less than SNR 0dB). The performance on our proposed wav-U-Net was improved by about 200% on SDR and 460% on NSDR compared to the conventional Jansson's wav-U-Net. Also, it was confirmed that the processing time of out wav-U-Net with 128 modified Mel-scale filter banks was about 2.7 times faster than the common wav-U-Net with 512 frequency bins as input values.

Objective : Cortex of Ulmi pumilae(CUP) has been used to treat several diseases including boil, swelling, and scabies etc. Recently, CUP was known to have wrinkle care and whitening actions. But, It's exact mechanisms are unclear. Methods : The present study was designed to investigate effects of CUP on Human HaCaT keratinocyte and malignant melanoma cells such as SK-MEL-2 and B16F10 in terms of cell viabilities, proliferations, DPPH free radical scavenging activities, oxygen free radical productions and inhibitory action on elastase activities. Results : CUP accelerated proliferation of HaCaT keratinocytes in the lower concentration. CUP also prevented cell death of HaCaT induced by Hydrogen peroxide, which products oxygen free radicals. On the contrary, CUP did not affect proliferations of SK-MEL-2 or B16F10. Futhermore, CUP showed inhibitory action against SK-MEL-2 proliferation at the concentration of $500{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ In addition, CUP was shown to have DPPH free radical scavenging activities and also have inhibitory effects on elastase activities too. On the fluorescent examinations, the present author knows that CUP elevated production levels of oxygen free radicals in malignant melanoma cell, SK-MEL-2. Conclusions : These results suggest that CUP has possibilities of usage for functional cosmetics which have wrinkle care and whitening activities and related mechanisms are involved in inhibition of elastase action and acceleration of oxidative stress in melanoma cell.
Transcription factor CP2 was identified initially to bind the promoter region of the murine a-globin gene and its activity was shown to increase 2 to 3 fold during the induced differentiation of murine erythroleukemia (MEL) cells. To get further insight into the role of CP2 during development and differentiation, steady-state levels of CP2 message were monitored by using reverse transcriptase (RT)-PCR and in situ hybridization assays in the cultured MEL cells and differentiating embryonic stem (ES) cells in vitro, and in fetal and adult mouse tissues. The amount of CP2 messages increased 3 to 5 fold during induced differentiation of MEL cells, suggesting that the increment of CP2 activity during induced differentiation of MEL cells is originated from the increase of transcription initiation. On the other hand, CP2 expression is not restricted to the erythroid lineage cells; CP2 expressed ubiquitously from the undifferentiated ES cells to adult tissue cells. CP2 transcript was observed even in the undifferentiated ES cells and the level of expression increased from day 8 of the differentiating embryoid bodies. RT-PCR assay in the total RNAs prepared from several tissues of the adult mouse also showed ubiquitous expression profile, although the levels of expression were variable among tissues. When non-radioactive in situ hybridization assay was performed to the paraffin-sectioned whole body mouse embryos at days 11.5, 13.5, and 16.5 after fertilization, variable amounts of positive signals were also detected in different tissues.
In this paper, we describe the comparison between the combination of features using a speech and music discrimination, which is classifying between speech and music on audio signals. Audio signals are classified into 3classes (speech, music, speech and music) and 2classes (speech, music). Experiments carried out on three types of feature, Mel-cepstrum, energy, zero-crossings, and try to find a best combination between features to speech and music discrimination. We using a Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) for discrimination algorithm and combine different features into a single vector prior to modeling the data with a GMM. In 3classes, the best result is achieved using Mel-cepstrum, energy and zero-crossings in a single feature vector (speech: 95.1%, music: 61.9%, speech & music: 55.5%). In 2classes, the best result is achieved using Mel-cepstrum, energy and Mel-cepstrum, energy, zero-crossings in a single feature vector (speech: 98.9%, music: 100%).
