  • Intermediate pentasil borosilicate zeolite-like materials have been crystallized by a novel method named steam-assisted conversion, which involves vapor-phase transport of water. Indeed, amorphous powders obtained by drying Na2O.SiO2.B2O3.TBA2O gels of various compositions using different boron sources are transformed into crystalline borosilicate zeolite belonging to pentasil family structure by contact with vapors of water under hydrothermal conditions. Using a variant of this method, a new material which has an intermediate structure of MFI/MEL in the ratio 90:10 was crystallized. The results show that steam and sufficiently high pH in the reacting hydrous solid are necessary for the crystallization to proceed. Characterization of the products shows some specific structural aspects which may have its unique catalytic properties. X-ray diffraction patterns of these microporous crystalline borosilicates are subjected to investigation, then, it is shown that the product structure has good crystallinity and is interpreted in terms of regular stacking of pentasil layers correlated by inversion centers (MFI structure) but interrupted by faults consisting of mirror-related layers (MEL structure). The products are also characterized by nitrogen adsorption at 77 K that shows higher microporous volume (0.160 cc/g) than that of pure MFI phase (0.119 cc/g). The obtained materials revealed high surface area (~600 m2/g). The infrared spectrum reveals the presence of an absorption band at 900.75 cm-1 indicating the incorporation of boron in tetrahedral sites in the silicate matrix of the crystalline phase.

  • In the present study, we investigated the actions of sphingosine-I-phosphate (SPP) in Mel-Ab melanocytes. We observed the cytoprotective effect of SPP on UVB-induced cell death. Following exposure of cells to UVB, a significant protective effect was seen in cultures pretreated with SPP. Since SPP is well known as a mitogenic agent, it is possible that the mitogenic effect of SPP may contribute to cell survival. Surprisingly, we found that SPP inhibited DNA-synthesis significantly. We were next interested in the regulation of the extracellular signal-regulated protein kinase (ERK) and Akt pathways by SPP. We clearly observed that SPP potently stimulated the phosphorylation of both ERK and Akt against UVB-induced cell death. Based on these results, we conclude that SPP may show its cytoprotective effect through ERK and Akt activation.

  • It is generally known that accurate segmentation is very necessary for both an individual word and continuous utterances in speech recognition. It is also commonly known that techniques are now being developed to classify the voiced and the unvoiced, also classifying the plosives and the fricatives. The method for accurate recognition of the phonemes isn't yet scientifically established. Therefore, in this study we analyze the Korean language, using the classification of 'Hunminjeongeum' and contemporary phonetics, with the frequency band, Mel band and Mel Cepstrum, we extract notable features of the phonemes from Korean speech and segment speech by the unit of the phonemes to normalize them. Finally, through the analysis and verification, we intend to set up Phonemic Segmentation System that will make us able to adapt it to both an individual word and continuous utterances.

  • Non-photorealistic Rendering(NPR) is a method that can be used to simulate a wide range of materials used in visual arts. Currently, there is lack of availability for oriental-style rendering in 3D animation in contrast to the commonly available western-style rendering. In this paper, we combine the wash drawing technique and NPR to create an oriental-style shader for 3D animation. Our approach makes use of the Maya Embeded Language(MEL) to implement this new technique.

  • Nowadays, mel-frequency cesptral coefficients (MFCCs) and Gaussian mixture models (GMMs) are used for the pathological voice detection. This paper suggests a method to improve the performance of the pathological/normal voice classification based on the MFCC-based GMM. We analyze the characteristics of the mel frequency-based filterbank energies using the fisher discriminant ratio (FDR). And the feature vectors through the linear discriminant analysis (LDA) transformation of the filterbank energies (FBE) and the MFCCs are implemented. An accuracy is measured by the GMM classifier. This paper shows that the FBE LDA-based GMM is a sufficiently distinct method for the pathological/normal voice classification, with a 96.6% classification performance rate. The proposed method shows better performance than the MFCC-based GMM with noticeable improvement of 54.05% in terms of error reduction.

  • The most popular speech feature used in speech recognition today is the Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC) algorithm, which could reflect the perception characteristics of the human ear more accurately than other parameters. This paper adopts MFCC and its first order difference, which could reflect the dynamic character of speech signal, as synthetical parametric representation. Furthermore, we quote Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) algorithm to search match paths in the pattern recognition process. We use the software "GoldWave" to record English digitals in the lab environments and the simulation results indicate the algorithm has higher recognition accuracy than others using LPCC, etc. as character parameters in the experiment for Digital Isolated Word Recognition (DIWR) system.

  • This paper proposes a noise reduction-based speech detection method under telephone channel environments. We adopt the AURORA front-end noise reduction algorithm based on the two-stage mel-warped Wiener filter approach as a preprocessor for the frequency domain speech detector. The speech detector utilizes mel filter-bank based useful band energies as its feature parameters. The preprocessor firstly removes the adverse noise components on the incoming noisy speech signals and the speech detector at the next stage detects proper speech regions for the noise-reduced speech signals. Experimental results show that the proposed noise reduction-based speech detection method is very effective in improving not only the performance of the speech detector but also that of the subsequent speech recognizer.

  • In this paper, we compared and analyzed the discrimination performance of speech/music about combinations of each features parameter. Audio signals are classified into 3 classes (speech, music, speech and music). On three types of features, Mel-cepstrum, energy, zero-crossings used to the experiments. Then compared and analyzed the best of the combinations between features to speech/ music discrimination performance. The best result is achieved using Mel-cepstrum, energy and zero-crossings in a single feature vector (speech: 95.1%, music: 61.9%, speech & music: 55.5%).
