  • Tourism in Thoi Son Islet has been the advanced model for rural tourism in the Mekong Delta region since the 1990s. The continuously rising number of tourists, however, has also created problems that affect sustainable rural development. To understand these problems, this research analyzed how rural tourism has been operated through the methodology of a stakeholder network. After investigating the network among key stakeholders (Ho Chi Minh travel agencies (HCMTAs), local travel agencies (LTAs), and local residents, the result showed that in the current model, HCMTAs and LTAs have played the role of connectors, working as hubs to shift tourists (demand) to match local residents (supply), with the networking being dominated by signed contracts (formal networks). The networks between LTAs and local residents are both formal and informal. Inter- and intra-networks among local residents are dominated by informal networks of established working relationships based on networks of family, friends, and neighbors. Moreover, this research has found that there is no cooperating network among LTAs. Among owners of tourist sites was not also found cooperating network. The primary motivating factor for these stakeholders is price competition; this has led to a disproportionately small share of revenue for local stakeholders, with most tourism revenue going to HCMTAs. Additionally, because of the high competition among local stakeholders, this results in local stakeholders having little or no negotiating power when conducting business with HCMTAs. Meanwhile the Tien Giang Tourism Association is inefficient in fostering cooperation among local stakeholders to increase their negotiating power.

  • The malting process of rice (OM4080 variety from Mekong Delta Rice Research Institute) was studied under pilot condition plan by means of the second-order experimental design. Processing parameters, such as the steeping time (0-60 hrs), steeping temperature ($5-45^{\circ}C$), germination time (0-8 days), germination temperature ($5-45^{\circ}C$) and gibberellin concentration (0-2 mg/kg) were investigated. As a result, all germination conditions, especially germination time, germination temperature, and gibberellin concentration had a significant effect on the malting loss, amylase activity and starch content. The protein content was not clearly affected by any conditions. The optimum conditions for malting process (with highest amylase activity) were as follows: 30 hrs of steeping time, $30-35^{\circ}C$ of steeping temperature, 5-5.5 days of germination time, $25^{\circ}C$ of germination temperature, and 1.5 mg/kg of giberrellin concentration.

  • The paper aims to investigate empirical causes of poverty of the Khmer ethnic people and suggest policy implication to help the Khmer ethnic people escape poverty in Tra Vinh province and the Mekong Delta. The study has been conducted with direct interviews with 300 Khmer households living in seven districts and cities in Tra Vinh province and with the use of multivariate regression. The research results show that a number of causes that affect poverty of poor households include lack of capital for production, lack of means of production, poor health and lack of labor, large families, lack of job opportunities or unemployment, and lack of willingness to escape poverty and education. Thus, there should be poverty reduction policy for the poor househlods in the coming time. Based on the current situation and regression results, the authors propose a number of recommendations: 1) Focus on preferential loan policies for poor people 2) Provide occupational training programs for improving incomes for the Khmer ethnic households 3) Build up special infrastructure in the Khmer ethnic areas 4) Focus on promoting cultural and belief institutions in areas of the Khmer ethnic people and 5) Improve and build up healthcare clinics services and facilities.

  • The purpose of this paper is to estimate the impact of credit rationing on the amount of trade credit used by farmers in Vietnam. This study employs a survey data collected through direct interviews with heads of 1,065 rice households randomly selected out of provinces and city in the Mekong River Delta (MRD). In each province or city, the village with the largest area of land devoted to rice production from the district with the largest area of land devoted to rice production was picked up for survey. In each village, 200 rice farmers were randomly chosen for interview. Based on a probit model and a semi-parametric propensity score matching (PSM) estimator while controlling socio-demographic traits of rice farmers, the estimated results show that non-credit rationed farmers use less trade credit to finance production compared to their credit rationed counterparts. Moreover, the amount of trade credit used by farmers decreases as the degree of credit rationing drops. This paper provides evidence of the substitutive relationship between bank credit and trade credit. It also implicitly suggests that banks can drive trade creditors out of the market if they manage to solve the problem of information asymmetry and transaction cost.

  • Bridges using double-tee (DT) girders from 12 m to 15 m are one of the good choices to improve accessibility in rural areas of the Mekong River Delta. In this study, nonlinear finite element method (FEM) analysis was conducted with different constitutive laws of materials. The FEM analysis results were compared to experimental results to confirm the applicability of the constitutive laws of materials for DT girders. A parametric study through FEM analysis was then conducted to investigate the effect of span lengths, top flange depths, and a number of prestressing tendons on the capacity of DT girders in order that propose DT girders for rural bridges. Parametric results showed that the top flange depth of a DT girder for rural bridges could be 120 mm. The DT girder with a span length of 12 m or 13 m could be used 16 tendons, while the DT girder with a span length of 14 m or 15 m could be set up with 20 tendons. The prestressed concrete DT girders based on FEM results can be suggested for the construction of rural bridges.

  • Delay on State-Funded Construction Projects (SFCPs) in Dong Thap - a province in Mekong Delta of Vietnam, as many provinces of Vietnam, have caused budget overrun through many recent years. The budget-overrun situations, in turn, have deepened the delay. Identifying critical factors affecting delay SFCPs plays a key role to mitigate negative impact of delay. 134/160 questionnaires were collected from personals working for project owners, consultants, supervisors and contractors in Dong Thap Province. Convenient sampling method was used. EFA was resulted in critical 04 factors with 20 variables caused delay in SFCPs, including: "Project technic, contractor's financial capacity and adjustment role of the government", "Regulation and Policy", "Mutual benefit support and concern between the government and residents", and "Disadvantage of construction site and weather season". Reliable measures to reduce delay on SFCPs are discussed to establish legal corridors to strictly controlling the process, consider mutual benefit between the government and its residents, and evaluating construction conditions. Those measures are considered could be applied in not only Dong Thap province, but most provinces of Vietnam as well.

  • Although Vietnam has a high risk of fish borne zoonotic trematode(FZT) infections for humans, little information exists on the epidemiology of these infections in the country's fish. Because of the importance of cultured cat-fish and snakehead production in An Giang province, a major production area in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam, a survey for FZTs was carried out in randomly selected fish farms between June 2005 and March 2006. For comparison, wild fish from the same area were also surveyed. A total of 852 cultured fish from 4 districts were collected and examined by pepsin digestion to determine their FZT infection status. In Tra catfish, the prevalence of all types of metacercariae was 2.6%, of which the prevalence of Haplorchis pumilio was 0.7%. The overall prevalence of metacercariae in wild fish was 30.6%, of which 10.3% harbored zoonotic species: H. pumilio(2.8%) and Procerovum sp.(5.6%). The prevalence of Opisthorchis metacercariae, which were diagnosed as O. viverrini, was 1.9%. No metacercariae were found in cultured snake head fish, although wild-caught snakehead fish had a FZT prevalence of 10.3%: 5.1% were O. viverrini; 2.6% H. pumilio; and 2.6% were Procerovum sp. These are the first reports of H. pumilio, Procerovum sp., and O. viverrini metacercariae in Vietnamese fish. These results indicate that consumption of improperly prepared fish represents a significant risk of acquiring FZTs in this south Vietnam region.

  • An experiment was conducted at the experimental duck farm of Cantho University in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam to evaluate the effects of offering pairwise feeds with different crude protein (CP) levels to Cherry Valley broiler ducks from 28-63 days of age on feed intake and performance. Five diets consisting of mixtures of soya bean meal, fish meal, maize meal and fine rice bran, were formulated to give isocaloric diets with 30, 24, 18, 16 and 12% CP. These were offered separately as pellets to growing ducklings in the following combinations: 30+18, 30+12, 24+16 and 18+12. A diet with 20% CP (CP20) was used as control. All the diets were offered ad libitum. Daily feed intakes (g dry matter, DM) were 161, 168, 150, 101 and 143 g for the 30+18, 30+12, 24+16, 18+12 and CP20 treatments, respectively. CP intakes were 29.6, 27.0, 24.8, 17.1 and 22.9% of total DM intake, and the ratio of methionine+cystine to lysine was 0.76, 0.75, 0.75, 0.76 and 0.75 for the 30+18, 30+12, 24+16, 18+12 and CP20 treatments, respectively. Live weights at 63 days of age were 2,937, 3,054, 2,898, 2,200, and 2,811 g (p<0.001), and daily live weight gains 57.8, 61.7, 57.0, 38.5 and 55.7 g (p<0.001) for the 30+18, 30+12, 24+16, 18+12 and CP20 treatments, respectively. The weights and yields of the carcass, breast and thigh muscles, and heart decreased in the order 30+18, 30+12, 24+16, CP20 and 18+12 (p<0.001). The present study suggests that growing broiler offered a combination of high and low protein feeds pairwise will eat excessive amounts of the high protein feed, thus resulting in protein intakes above requirements.
