  • This study was conducted to make clustering analysis based on major physicochemical characteristics related to palatability of cooked rice. 89 Korea-bred japonica rice cultivars could be largely classified into two groups, that is, Dongjinbyeo and Ilpumbyeo groups. The Ilpumbyeo group was divided into two subgroups; Ilpumbyeo and Chucheongbyeo groups. The two major rice groups showed significant difference in viscogram properties of rice flour. Ilpumbyeo group revealed slightly higher estimates of viscogram traits as compared with Dongiinbyeo group in average. Early-maturing rice group showed slighly lower estimates of taste meter and higher protein content compared with medium or medium late maturing ones. Also, early and medium-maturing groups exhibited slightly higher estimates of peak, hot and breakdown viscosities but lower estimates of consistenency and setback viscosities compared with medium-late-maturing one. The rice cultivars developed in 2000's revealed slightly higher estimates of peak, hot, cool and consistency viscosities compared with those in $1980's{\sim}1990's$. The grain quality properties significantly associated with the esimates of Toyo taste meter were protein and amylose contents and hot viscosity. The lower protein content and hot viscosity and the higher amylose content, the higher estimates of the taster meter. The protein content was highly negatively correlated with amylose content of milled rice. The important quality components contributed to multiple regression formula for estimating the Toyo taster meter values were protein content, alkali digestion value, and hot viscosity. The fittness of this formula was about 49% along with the coefficients of determination.

  • "Samkwang1," a japonica rice variety, was developed as a cross between "Samkwang" and F1 of Suwon152 (IT008283), which has a medium maturing and lodging resistance and Samkwang (IT284608), a high quality variety with bacterial blight resistance and mid-late maturing property by the rice breeding team at NICS in 2015. The heading date of "Samkwang1" was August 8 in the middle plain area, which was 2 days early than that of "Hwaseong." "Samkwang1" had a culm length of 77 cm, which was 7 cm shorter than that of "Hwaseong," and it had 128 spikelets per panicle. The viviparous germination rate of "Samkwang1" was 2.1%. "Samkwang1" showed resistance to blast, bacterial blight (K1, K2, and K3 race) and stripe virus, but was susceptible to the K3a race of bacterial blight, dwarf and black streak dwarf viruses, and plant hoppers. The milled rice of this variety exhibits translucent and medium short grains. The cooked rice grains of "Samkwang1" have an excellent palatability index (0.35) and lower protein content (6.2%) than that of "Hwaseong." The characteristics related to grain milling were better than those of "Hwaseong," especially the head rice milling recovery ratio and head rice ratio (94.2%). "Samkwang1" showed 5.62 MT/ha of milled rice productivity at 11 sites under ordinary cultivation conditions (Registration No. 6798).

  • This study was carried out to get infirmation for the breeding varieties and developing the cultural methods with representative 32 cultivars which were diffused from 1900 to 1982 and two cultural methods which were old one i.e., low dressing and late planting and modern one i.e., medium dressing and early planting. Duration of transplanting between cultural practices were 15 days but the duration of heading date were 5days. Panicle projecting duration was 5-10 days in all cultivars, especially, it is 5 days in early maturing varieties, 6-7 days in medium maturing varieties and 7-10 days in late maturing varieties. Periods from transplanting date to effective ripening date were 99.8 days in low dressing and late planting method, 106.2 days in modern one but the periods from heading date to effective ripening date were 31.4 days in low dressing and late planting method, 30.2 days in modern one. Ripening speed was very active from 5 to 10 days after heading and the daily increase of 1000 grain weight was from 847.8mg to 1130mg in that time and it slightly increased from 5 to 35 days after heading in Japonica varieties but increased after heading and suddenly decreased at 30 days after heading in Indica/Japonica varieties. Meteorological factors (temperature and amount of solar radiation) were positively correlated with the ripening speed but negatively correlated with the period of physiological and effentive ripening.

  • Selection of oat variety according to cultivation period is an important to increase productivity of forage crop. To investigate the growth characters and dry matter productivity of oats according to cultivation period, early-maturing oat(EM0) and medium-maturing oat(MM0) variety were sown in spring and autumn at central district of Korea. When oats were cultivated in spring, MMO variety was longer 8 cm in leaf length and wider 5 mm in leaf width than 25 cm and 12 mm of EM0 variety, rexpectively. but in autumn, those were not different between maturities of oat varieties. Plant length of MMO variety was longer 7 cm than that of EM0 Variety in spring cultivation, but in autumn, plant length of EM0 variety was longer 14 cm than that of MMO variety. Heading dates were 20th to 22th May in EM0 variety, and 30th May to 10th June in MMO variety in spring cultivation, and ear of EM0 variety emerged 30th Oct. to loth Nov. but that of MMO variety did not emerge at harvesting day in autumn cultivation. In Spring cultivation, dry matter(DM) yield of EM0 variety was 7,349 kg/ha that was less 56% than 11,466 kg/ha of MMO variety, but In Autumn, was more 15% than 6,575 kg/ha of MMO variety. In conclusion, selection of oat variety in spring and autumn cultivation can be different with cropping system of forage crop, and this trial is suggesting that oat variety could be sown MMO variety in spring and EM0 variety in autumn at central district of Korea. • This experiment was conducted in the paddy field to investigate the influence of bensulfuron (methyl-2-[[[[[(4,6-dimethoxypyrimidin-2-yl)amino]carbonyl]amino]sulfonil]methyl]benzoate)+butachlor (N-(butoxymethyl)-2-chloro-2',6'-diethyl acetanilide) and bensulfuron+mefenacet(2-(1,3-benzothiazol-2-yloxy)-N-methylacetanilide) for seedling age of rice with Dongjinbyeo of medium-late-maturing variety, Hwaseongbyeo of medium-maturing variety and Namwonbyeo of early-maturing variety. Two herbicide applications interfered with the early growth of all rice varieties, the root was especially damaged more than the shoot. The phytotoxicity of bensulfuron+butachlor and bensulfuron+mefenacet was not significant statistically and the phytotoxicity of these herbicides for seedling age was apt to be similar, also. Twenty and 35days seedlings of Dongjinbyeo and Hawseongbyeo had more growth amount than 8days seedlings, but Namwonbyeo had opposite trend. The number of maximum tillers in the plots applied herbicides were fewer than untreated control but, the percentage of productive tillers was higher than those. Heading date for Namwonbyeo was delayed 2, 1-2 and 2-3days on 35, 20 and 8days seedlings by herbicide application, respectively.

  • Saemimyeon, a Tongil type, medium-late maturing rice variety, is especially used for preparing rice noodles. Its high amylose content was developed to fit market demands and to be affordable for rice processing industries. One of the high yielding lines, Milyang181 (Hanareum), was used in the final three-way cross of $IR50^*2$/YR18241-B-B-115-1-1 for yield improvement and cultivation stabilization, including disease resistance. YR24235-10-1-3, a high yielding and compact plant type, was selected and named Milyang278 after yield test at NICS (RDA, Miryang) in 2010. It was subjected to regional yield test at six sites in the middle and southern plain areas of South Korea. Saemimyeon heading occurs on August 12 and is a mid-late maturing cultivar, with resistance to leaf blast, rice stripe virus, and bacterial blight (K1-K3a), but it is susceptible to major diseases and insect pest infestation. Saemimyeon showed a high amylose content of 26.7%, with a relatively low KOH digestion value of 3.5, which are key factors in rice noodles and pasta processing. In the local adaptability tests, the yield of Saemimyeon was 7.08 MT/ha-an increase of approximately 106% compared to that of Dasan. Thus, Saemimyeon is suitable for cultivation in the southern and middle plain areas of South Korea.

  • The plant morphological and chromosome characteristics of 'Bonanza', 'Coral Candy' and 'Purple Crystal', a formolongi-Asiatic (FA) interspecific hybrid species bred at the National Institute of Horticultural Science, Rural Development Administration (RDA), were investigated in this study. The flowering time of these species were found to have some variation. 'Bonanza' flowers in the middle to late June (medium-late maturing cultivar), 'Coral Candy' in the mid of June (medium maturing cultivar), and 'Purple Crystal' was observed to be in early June (early maturing cultivar). The flowering direction of all three cultivars are upward facing flowers and having a weak fragrance. The height of the plants was recorded in the range between 101.0 cm ('Purple Crystal') to 142.3 cm ('Bonanza'), thus they are able to develop cut flowers with excellent stem elongation. Flower diameters of 'Bonanza' (17.1 cm) and 'Coral Candy' (16.9 cm) were classified to be large sized flowers. On the other hand, 'Purple Crystal' had a narrow flower diameter (12.3 cm) with an outer petal width of more than 4.0 cm. Leaf length was observed for 'Bonanza' (15.7 cm), 'Coral Candy' (19.7 cm), and 'Purple Crystal' (11.1 cm). Chromosome analysis was done using FISH technique. Results revealed that all three cultivars were observed as triploids (2n=3x=36). FISH analysis also showed 5S/45S rDNA of 'Bonanza', 'Coral Candy' and 'Purple Crystal' as 4/11 loci, 4/12 loci, and 4/11 loci, respectively. The results of the FISH analysis are useful as markers to distinguish cultivars, since the patterns of rDNA observed on the remaining chromosomes are significantly different except FISH patterns of chromosome #3.

  • This study aimed to evaluate the range of maximum TE that could measure T2 relaxation time accurately by setting diverse maximum TE with using contrast medium phantoms. Contrast medium phantoms ranging from low to high concentrations were made by using Gadoteridol. The relaxation time and relaxation rate were compared and evaluated by conducting T2 mapping by using reference data based on various TEs and data obtained from different maximum TEs. It was found that accurate T2 relaxation time could be expressed only when the maximum TE over a certain range was used in the section with long T2 relaxation time, such as the low concentration section of saline or gadolinium contrast medium. Therefore, the maximum TE shall be longer than the T2 relation time for accurately maturing the T2 relaxation of a certain tissue or a substance.
