  • Lateral thrust jet has better maneuverability performance than the control surface like the conventional fin for attitude control or orbital transition of guided weapons. However, in the supersonic region, a jet interaction flow occurs due to the lateral thrust jet during flight, and a complicated flow structure is exhibited by the interaction of the shock wave, boundary layer flow, and the vortex flow. Especially, hit-to-kill interceptors require precise control and maneuvering, so it is necessary to analyze the effect of jet interaction flow. Conventional jet interaction analyses were performed under low altitude conditions, but there are not many cases in the case of medium altitude condition, which has different flow characteristics. In this study, jet interaction flow analysis is performed on the lateral jet controlled interceptor operating at medium altitude. Based on the results, the structural characteristics of the flow field and the changes of aerodynamic coefficient are analyzed.

  • The UAV propulsion system that will be operated for long time at more than 40,000ft altitude should have not only fuel flow minimization but also high reliability and durability. If this UAV propulsion system may have faults, it is not easy to recover the system from the abnormal, and hence an accurate diagnostic technology must be needed to keep the operational reliability. For this purpose, the development of the health monitoring system which can monitor remotely the engine condition should be required. In this study, a fuzzy trend monitoring method for detecting the engine faults including mechanical faults was proposed through analyzing performance trends of measurement data. The trend monitoring is an engine conditioning method which can find engine faults by monitoring important measuring parameters such as fuel flow, exhaust gas temperatures, rotational speeds, vibration and etc. Using engine condition database as an input to be generated by linear regression analysis of real engine instrument data, an application of the fuzzy logic in diagnostics estimated the cause of fault in each component. According to study results, it was confirmed that the proposed trend monitoring method can improve reliability and durability of the propulsion system for a long endurance UAV to be operated at medium altitude.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the change of geographical (or geomorphological) location environment of the dwelling site and its cause in Daejon Basin during transition from the Bronze Age to the Proto Three Kingdoms Period. In order to achieve this goal, it was divided into (1) 'comparison of the total number of dwelling sites of a group of remains (or high-density dwelling remains)' and (2) 'comparison of the total number of dwelling sites in certain remains including locations of dwelling of two periods' and location environment was compared to each other in aspects of altitude, gradient, 'distance from the river of water available for use' and 'the difference between the highest altitude and lowest altitude of river bed of water available for use' based on change of period. The results were as follows: 1. looking at a change of individual factors, the altitude was elevated and the gradient was increased. The distance from the river of water available for use was decreased or increased in case of 'small scale river' and it was very little difference or increased in case of 'medium scale river'. The difference between the highest altitude and lowest altitude of river bed of water available for use was increased in case of 'small scale river' and it was increased or decreased in case of 'medium scale river'. If comparing the individual factors to each other, the increase and decrease of altitude, gradient and the difference between the highest altitude and lowest altitude of river bed of water available for use have the similar pattern. Especially, it was shown that the increase of gradient affected the increase of altitude and the difference between the highest altitude and lowest altitude of river bed of water available for use. In addition, it was shown that the increase and decrease of distance from the river of water available for use had the different pattern from those of altitude, gradient and 'the difference between the highest altitude and lowest altitude of river bed of water available for use'. 3. With above results, it was thought that combination of micro landform characteristics (eg. Characteristics of gradient) of low hills distributed within Daejeon Basin and rich aquatic environment surrounding the low hills affected the selection of location of dwelling sites at the time. Especially, it was shown that 'gradient and distance from the river of water available for use' were relatively more important factors for the inhabitants at the time to select the location of dwelling sites compared to 'altitude and difference between the highest altitude and lowest altitude of river bed of water available for use' upon selecting the location of dwelling.

  • Surveillance and reconnaissance intelligence in the space domain will become increasingly important in future battlefield environments. Moreover, to assimilate the military provocations and trends of hostile countries, imagery intelligence of the highest possible resolution is required. There are many methods for improving the resolution of optical satellites when observing the ground, such as designing satellite optical systems with a larger diameter and lowering the operating altitude. In this paper, we propose a method for improving ground observation resolution by using an optical system for a previously designed low orbit satellite and lowering the operating altitude of the satellite. When the altitude of a satellite is reduced in a circular orbit, a large amount of thrust fuel is required to maintain altitude because the satellite's altitude can decrease rapidly due to atmospheric drag. However, by using the critical inclination, which can fix the position of the perigee in an elliptical orbit to the observation area, the operating altitude of the satellite can be reduced using less fuel compared to a circular orbit. This method makes it possible to obtain a similar observational resolution of a medium-sized satellite with the same weight and volume as a small satellite. In addition, this method has the advantage of reducing development and launch costs to that of a small-sized satellite. As a result, we designed an elliptical orbit. The perigee of the orbit is 300 km, the apogee is 8,366.52 km, and the critical inclination is 116.56°. This orbit remains at its lowest altitude to the Korean peninsula constantly with much less orbit maintenance fuel compared to the 300 km circular orbit.

  • The production and decomposition rate of litters from the three different locations, Quercus acutissium forest at 630 m, Q. mongolica forests at 1, 005m and 1, 490 m of Mt. Dokyoo, were estimated by Olson model. The contents of N, P, K, Ca and Na in soils were measured and the relationships among them were elucidated. The amounts of litter production in Q. mangolica were the lowest, 378.96g/$m^2$ at 1, 490 m and the highest, 876.12g/$m^2$ at 1, 005 m. And the amounts of litter production in Q. acutissima at 630 m was 686.16 g/$m^2$. The decay rate of litters in Q. mongolica was the smallest, 0.123 at 1, 490 m, and the largest, 0.222 at 1, 005 m. And that in Q. acutissima was 0.169 at 630 m which was the medium rate. The production and decay rate of litters decreased with the ascending altitude. The values at 630 m were maller than those at 1, 005 m. This might be due to the fact that the tree species at 630 m was Q. acutissima was 0.169 at 630 m which was the medium rate. The production and decay rate of litters decreased with the ascending altitude. The values at 630 m was Q. acutissima which was different from Q. mongolica at 1, 005 m and 1, 490 m. The half-0life of litter decay in Q. monglica was 5, 634 years at 1, 490 m and 3.134 years at 1, 005 m. And that in Q. acutissima was 4.132 years at 630 m. The decay rates of litters were tend to be inversely proportional to the ascending altitude. The annual standing stocks of mineral and their amounts returned to the soil were proportional to the decay rate of organic matters.

  • In this study, computational analyses are carried out to investigate the interference flows and the aerodynamic characteristics of a hit-to-kill intercepter due to lateral jets at medium altitude. In addition, the analyses are performed for air and multi-species gas used in the side jet. The results indicate that the position of the barrel shock are shifted upstream and the structure of the shock wave are changed for the multi-species jet when compared to the air jet. As a result, the high pressure region with multi-species jet moves forward and the pitching moment is higher under the same flow condition. Moreover, the inclusion of high temperature effects makes drastic changes in pressure distribution. The jet width is much bigger, and the jet diffuses over wider range in medium altitude than in low altitude, because of the low density of the freestream.

  • This study was conducted to increase the utility and productivity of forage crops at high altitued areas. For that purpose, 21 cultivars of corn and 2 cultivars of rye were cultivated for 3 years using a randomized block designed with 3 replications. The results obtained were as follows. 1. In the Taekwallyong area (800m above sea level) which has a short frostless period, all the seeding and harvest of corn must be finished within about 135 days between mid May, the time of the last frost, and late September, the time of the first frost 2. It was relatively safe for the early maturity cultivar(ll0days) and the medium maturity cultivar(l20days), compared to the late maturity cultivar(l30days) which might have had the possibility of an overlapping period between the time of harvest and the first frost in high altitude areas 3. The productivity of forage corn, which is the most efficient crop for capturing solar energy, varied significantly with the climate circumstances but the productivity of Taekwallyong showed similar results of 19 M/T/ha, compared with 20 M/T/ha in Suwon from the '96-'98 study 4. Rye could be cultivated in high altitude areas and when corn was raised as a second crop after rye in the same year, it was possible to increase the productivity of dry matter yield by 20% through double cropping(P < 0.05). • This paper shows an autopilot design example with simulation results for a medium range surface-to-air missile used to intercept fast maneuver targets. The missile is assumed to use both aerodynamic fins and side thrusters to achieve fast time response. The steady-state maneuver capability of the missile is assumed to be enough at high altitude to engage usual maneuvering targets. Side thruster is used to get an extremely rapid acceleration response at high altitude where the missile´s aerodynamic control effectiveness is weak. The strategy of control design is firstly to employ side thrusters to achieve a rapid response and then to hand-over the control to the aerodynamic fins to maintain the desired acceleration command in the steady state ...

  • This paper describes design and performance test of dual-mode horn antenna for HAPS (High Altitude Platform Station) in 47.2 - 47.5 GHz and 47.9 - 48.2 GHz bands. To obtain the optimal geometry parameters of it. the conical section is represented by a stepped transition composed of a set of cylindrical waveguide sections. For each step. the corresponding generalized scattering matrix is calculated. The elements of the matrices at the open end of the horn, are calculated by the rigorous formulas of the factorization method. To verify the theoretical results, a horn breadboard was manufactured for the medium frequency of 47.7 GHz and its radiation beam patterns were measured. The calculated and theoretical results are in good agreement.
