  • The present study investigated the antitumor activity of the aqueous-alcoholic extracts from unripe cotton balls of Gossypium indicum. An Exposure of murine B16 melanoma and L1210 lymphoma cells to the extracts resulted in their severe deaths in time- and concentration-dependent manners. Of the extracts, hydrophilic fractions were most efficacious for the antitumor activity and found to contain certain amounts of catechin and its derivatives. The hydrophilic extract fraction C36B2-8 had approximately 10 times more cytotoxic effects on B12 and L1210 cells than on isolated murine thymocytes. High concentrations (>150 $\mu$g/ml) of C 36B3-8 mainly induced necrotic cell death. At low concentrations (<100 $\mu$g/ml), however, C 36B3-8 induced not only necrosis but also apoptosis of the two tumor cell lines, which was proved by the TUNEL staining and DNA fragmentation techniques. The data indicate that certain ingredients of the cotton ball extract of G. indicum have an antitumor activity.

  • This case report describes our treatment of a persistent periantral abscess in a 35-year-old woman. The abscess developed following a zygoma-reduction surgery, during which a preexisting fungal ball had not been addressed. Our comprehensive treatment approach included functional endoscopic sinus surgery, fungal ball removal, abscess drainage, and debridement. Two weeks postoperatively, the patient's symptoms had resolved. A 6-month postoperative follow-up revealed no signs of recurrence or complications, and the patient reported satisfactory functional and aesthetic results. This case underscores the importance of thorough preoperative evaluations and raises awareness about the potential risks of untreated asymptomatic pathologies, which can potentially progress and lead to further complications.

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects on the muscle thickness and contraction time using sound wave vibrator and swiss ball. Methods : This study was performed on 20 subjects. 20 subjects were divided into two groups; Lumbar stability exercise using sound wave vibrator exercise(n=10)(Group1), Lumbar stability exercise using Swiss ball exercise(n=10)(Group2). Both of the group performed the exercise 3 times a week for 5 weeks. The data was analyzed by the paired t-test to compare before and after difference of factors on each group and the Independent t-test to compare the between groups. Results : Both group were increased muscle contracture time on Straight Leg Rise(SLR) test (p<0.05). It means both group were increased lumbar stability. However, by comparing the between groups, there were no statistically significant difference about muscle thickness of multifidus and transverse abdominal.(p>0.05). Conclusion : As a result of this study, we suggest that the sound wave vibrator may be effective exercise tool for lumbar stability exercise like a swiss ball.

  • Purpose : Genu varum is a condition characterized by a wider than normal gap between. This may be due to muscle weakness caused by poor posture, lifestyle, or lack of exercise. This study aimed to compare the effects of ball-based squats and narrow squats on muscle thickness, Q-angle, and the gap between the knees, in order to assess the potential for improving this condition. Methods : Twenty six adult participants with genu varum were randomly assigned to either a ball-based squat group (n=13) or a narrow squats group (n=13). Both groups performed their respective exercises three times weekly for 4 weeks. The data was analyzed using paired t-tests to compare pre- and post- intervention measurements within each group, and independent t-test was used to compare the two groups. Results : Both groups showed significant improvement in the thickness of the vastus lateralis and medialis, and rectus femoris muscles, as well as a significant decrease in the gap between the knees (p<.05). However, there was no significant difference in Q-angle variation between the two group. Furthermore, there was no significant differences in the Q-angle, gap between the knees, and muscle thickness variation between both groups. Conclusion : The results suggest that both ball-based squats and narrow squats are effective in improving muscle thickness and reducing the gap between the knees in adults with genu varum. However, there was no significant difference between the two types of squats in terms of their effects on the Q-angle. These findings highlight the potential for exercise interventions to address this common postural issue.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of 8-week schroth 3-dimensional exercise and ball-sling complex exercise treatment on cobb's angle, abdominal muscle endurance, flexibility and balance in adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis. Thirty subjects with scoliosis were random assignment into one of two experimental groups, either schroth treatment(n=15) or ball-sling complex exercise treatment(n=15). Exercise program was to perform for 8-week and 90min and 3 times per week. The results of this study were as follows; First, cobb's angle was significantly decreased after 8-weeks in schroth treatment(p<.001). And also abdominal muscle endurance(p<.05), flexibility(p<.001) and balance(p<.001) were significantly improve in pre vs. post treatment. Second, the ratio of cobb's angle change was significantly higher in schroth treatment compared to ball-sling complex exercise treatment following 8-weeks(p<.05). These results suggest that although both the schroth treatment and bal-sling complex exercise treatment in adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis can improve on cobb's angle, abdominal muscle endurance, flexibility and balance, but schroth treatment was better than ball-sling complex exercise treatment improving effect of cobb's angle. Therefore, we consider that schroth treatment has more effect of prevention and therapy in idiopathic scoliosis in adolescents.

  • Background: Rhinoplasty is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery procedures. Most Asians desire elevation of their relatively flat nasal dorsum and tip to make them appear more prominent. This study introduces a simple method of nasal tip plasty using three-dimensional (3D)-printed polycaprolactone (PCL) (Smart Ball®), which provides the required length and volume for this purpose and enables the creation of a nasal tip of the desired shape in a safe and simple manner. Methods: Between September 2014 and May 2017, 22 patients participated in a survey to assess postoperative satisfaction levels. Additionally, three plastic surgeons compared patients' pre- and 1-year postoperative photographs to evaluate the results. All patients underwent 2- to 4-year postoperative follow-up. Results: Levels of subjective satisfaction among patients were 3.59, 3.50, 3.82, 3.73, 3.55, and 3.82 for each of the 6 categories evaluated, with a mean of 3.67/4 points, indicating high satisfaction levels. The mean plastic surgeon-reported score for the 22 patients was 4.47/5 points, which also indicates highly successful outcomes. Postoperative nasal tip rotation and tip projection were ideal in most patients. Conclusion: Our novel method using 3D-printed PCL (Smart Ball®) provides the optimal length and volume required for nasal tip plasty and enables the creation of a nasal tip of the desired shape, in a safe and simple manner. An advantage of our method is that it retains the original nasal structure in contrast to structural changes observed with the use of conventional methods.

  • PURPOSE: This study examined the effects of core stability exercise on the strength, activation of the trunk muscle, and pulmonary function in a Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) patient. METHODS: A 38-year-old male with GBS was enrolled in the study. A core stability exercise program was implemented for four weeks with a duration of 30 min/day and a frequency of three days/week. The program consisted of abdominal crunch, Swiss ball crunch, bicycle crunch, medicine ball sit-up with a toss, medicine ball rotational chest pass, raised upper body and lower body, and dead bug. Measurements of the strength of the trunk muscle (trunk flexion and hip flexion), activation of trunk muscles (rectus femoris; RA, external oblique abdominal; EOA, internal oblique abdominal; IOA, erector spinae; ES), and pulmonary function (forced expiratory capacity; FVC, forced expiratory volume at one second; FEV1) were taken before and after four weeks of core stability exercise. RESULTS: The strength of trunk muscles increased in the trunk and hip flexion after four weeks of core stability exercise, respectively, compared to the baseline levels. Activation of the trunk muscles increased in RA, EOA, and IOA after four weeks of core stability exercise compared to baseline levels, but decreased in ES after four weeks of core stability exercise compared to the baseline levels. The pulmonary function increased in FVC and FEV1 after four weeks of core stability exercise compared to the baseline levels. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that core stability exercise improves strength, Activation of the trunk muscle, And pulmonary function in patients with GBS.

  • Asymmetrical posture during static stance has been identified as a common problem in persons with hemiplegia. This study examined the effect of a purposeful exercise training program on symmetrical weight bearing in three adult persons with hemiplegia. Multiple baseline design was used. The intervention program, including ball throwing and catching, rolling ball catching and throwing, and Swiss ball pulling and stopping was introduced for 15 minutes each day during each intervention phase. Quantitative measurement of the weight distribution was taken with the Limloader. Visual inspection and mean of data revealed a significant improvement in symmetrical weight distribution. This result suggests that a purposeful exercise training program can be effective in helping persons with hemiplegia achieve symmetric stances.
