In this study, we evaluated the anti-cancer effect of extracts of leaves (ST-L) and branches (ST-B) from Sageretia theezans in human colorectal cancer cells. ST-L and ST-B significantly inhibited the proliferation of human colorectal cancer cells, SW480. ST-L and ST-B decreased cyclin D1 protein level through the induction of cyclin D1 proteasomal degradation via $GSK3{\beta}$-dependent threonine-286 phosphorylation of cyclin D1. In addition, ST-L and ST-B increased HO-1 protein through p38, ROS and $GSK3{\beta}$-dependent Nrf2 activation. These findings suggest that ST-L and ST-B may have great potential for the development of anti-cancer drug to treat human colorectal cancer.
The experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of medicinal plants on ethanol-metabolism. Sprague Dawley rats divided into 6 groups (n=8), fed with 10% ethanol and diets supplemented with each 1% of four plant extracts, ${\alpha}-tocopherol$ (as positive control) and fiber (as negative control) for 4 weeks. Group supplemented with plant extract of Ulmus davidiana showed the most high value (322 nM NADH/min/mg protein) in alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) activity among the experimented groups $(144{\sim}312\;nM\;NADH/min/mg\;protein)$ at p<0.05. Groups fed with Lagerstroemia indica and Zelkova serrata extract-supplemented diets indicated high activity in aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH, 16.7 & 12.3 M NADH/min/mg protein), which were comparatively lower than 20.1 M NADH/min/mg protein of ${\alpha}-tocopherol$ fed group. All of the groups fed with plant extracts indicated very low GPT activities $(13.9{\sim}17.3\;IU/l)$ compared to those (146.1 & 128.6 IU/l) fed with ${\alpha}-tocopherol$ and fiber at p<0.05. From these results, it is suggested that Lagerstroemia indica have a potent ethanol-metabolizing activity.
This study was carried out to search the natural antioxidants from the 36 medicinal plants. $IC_{50}$ values of linoleic acid peroxidation inhibition to the BHA, BHT and ${\alpha}-tocopherol$ showed $7.2{\mu}g/ml$, $7.3{\mu}g/ml$, and $26.6{\mu}g/ml$, but hexane extract of Zingiber officinale showed $13.2{\mu}g/ml$, EtOAc extracts of Phellinus linteus, Morus alba, Zingiber officinale and butanol extract of Diospyros kaki showed $15.9{\mu}g/ml$, $16.9{\mu}g/ml$, $20.1{\mu}g/ml$, and $21.5{\mu}g/ml$ respectively. $IC_{50}$ values of DPPH radical scavenging activity of BHA, BHT and $\alpha$-tocopherol showed $14.9{\sim}27.7{\mu}g/ml$, but EtOAc extract of Paeonia suffruticosa showed the lowest $6.5{\mu}g/ml$ than those of other extracts, EtOAc extracts of Camellia sinensis, Salvia miltiorrhiz, and Phellinus linteus showed $8.0{\mu}g/ml$, $11.5{\mu}g/ml$, and $13.0{\mu}g/ml$ respectively.

In this study, we were performed to elucidate the antioxidant and anticancer activity by leaves extracts from Acer tegmentosum (AT-L). In DPPH, ABTS radical scavenging activity, the AT-L revealed the high scavenging activity. Especially, the AT-L measured the highest ABTS radical scavenging activity, which is higher than ascorbic acid. The types of human cancer cells for evaluating the anticancer activity were colorectal cancer (SW480), prostate cancer (PC-3), breast cancer (MCF-7), pancreatic cancer (AsPC-1), lung cancer (A549) and liver cancer (HepG2). Human cancer cell viability was measured using MTT assay. Treatment of the AT-L decreased the cell viability and induced apoptosis in SW480 cells. These results suggest that extracts of the AT-L can be used as supplementary material for developing the natural antioxidant and anticancer drug for human cancer cells.
The study was conducted to investigate candidate materials as anti-inflammation agent from plant resources. Activities of 33 plant parts extracts with the final concentration of 5${\mu}g/ml$ were evaluated on the several inflammation-related markers such as the release of proinflammatoty cytokine [tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-${\alpha}$) & interleukin-6 (IL-6)], nitric oxide (NO), the expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and inhibitor of nuclear factor kappa-B alpha ($I{\kappa}-B{\alpha}$) in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-treated RAW 264.7 cells. The extracts in the final concentration of 10 ${\mu}g/ml$ were also screened on peroxynitrite (ONOO$^-$) scavenging activity. Eleven extracts selected from the screening assay were verified on the inhibition activity on peroxynitrite and total reactive species oxygen (ROS) in the several concentrations. As results, Alpinia officinarum Hance (rhizome), Inula britannica var. chinensis Regel (flower), Ulmus arvifolia Jacq (trunk peel) and Aster scaber Thunb. (aerial part) showed comparatively potent anti-inflammatory activities in vitro cells or chemical level systems, and then these four plant parts should be studied on the antiinflammatory mechanism by further studies.
Melanin is specifically produced in melanocytes. The pathway for melanin biosynthesis is mainly controlled by tyrosinase. To estimate the inhibitory effect of melanin biosynthesis from 31 medicinal plants extracts, we tested the inhibitory effects of the tyrosinase promoter on B16 mouse melanoma cells. The result of this study demonstrated that Mori Radicis Cortex and Castena Fractus extracts only in tested medicinal plant extracts have high inhibitory effects on tyrosinase promoters with very low cytotoxicity on B16 mouse melanoma cells. Therefore, extracts of Mori Radicis Cortex and Castena Fractus were evaluated as very effective negative regulators of tyrosinase gene expression.
The physiological activity of 5 kinds of medicinal plant extracts were examined. Total polyphenol contents showed the highest value in 50 $\%$ ethanol extracts. Electron donating ability showed the highest value in 50 $\%$ ethanol extracts of Glycyrrhiza uralensis. SOD-like activity showed the highest activity in 50$\%$ ethanol extracts of Glycyrrhiza uralensis. Medicinal plant extracts showed the different nitrite scavenging abilities under the different pH conditions. Medicinal plant extracts showed the highest value in nitrite scavenging ability at pH 1.2. The maximum nitrite scavenging effect was found at pH 1.2 and decreased as pH increased. Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitory activity showed the highest value in 50 $\%$ ethanol extracts of dried garlic.

A total of 708 methanol extracts from 599 species in 126 families(e.g. Aceraceae) of plant resources were screened for inhibition of cosmetics contaminating microbe, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albicans using 96-well microplate bioassay. Four plant extracts including Celastrus orbiculatus inhibited the growth of Staphylococcus aureus over 90%, 38 extracts including Acer palmatum var. nakaii inhibited the growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa over 60% and 10 extracts including Ilex crenata var. microphylla inhibited growth of Candida albicans over 60%. Plant extracts showing growth inhibition activity against S. aureus, P. aeruginosa and C. albicans could be used as a reference guide for the future development of natural preservatives for cosmetics.
Alopecia is usually presented as patchy, no scarring hair loss. It seems to be a hormonal imbalance or an immune mediated disease, whereas genetic predisposition, environmental and psychological factors may be involved in its etiology. Many treatments of alopecia disease have been widely applied, but their side effects are also well known. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate efficacy and safety of a food supplement containing medicinal plant extracts, amino acid and vitamin complex on the prevention of hair loss in human. A total of 20 subjects aged between 29-50 years with subjective hair loss complaint were recruited for this study. Each subject took 1 g/day supplement for 3 months. 5-Scale self-assessment test, hair loss count and measurement of hair thickness were conducted to evaluate the effect of supplement on the improvement of hair loss. Subjective hair loss was decreased and hair damage and thickness were improved in self-assessment test. After 3 months of supplementation, hair loss counts were decreased (P<0.05) while hair thickness was increased(P<0.001) significantly. There was no side effect observed during the study. These results suggest that the supplement consist of medicinal plant extracts, amino acid and vitamin complex might be useful for the improvement of hair loss with no significant side effects.

Ethanol and butanol fractionation of E. senticosus showed strong anti-oxidant activity, and methanol and water extracts also had high anti-oxidant activity. The anti-oxidant activities in ethanol and butanol fractionation were higher than or similar to those of ${\alpha}-tocopherol$. The cytotoxic effect of root extract of E. senticosus was evaluated on seven different human cancer cell lines, The extracts of leaf and stem of E. senticosus also had strong antioxidant activity, but the antioxidant activity in root extract was higher than those in leaf and stem extracts. Methanol, hexane, and aqueous fraction layer had much higher inhibitory activities on lipid peroxidation in rat liver microsomes compared with ${\alpha}-tocopherol$. The effect of root extract of E. senticosus was evaluated on six human cancer cell lines. The values of 50% growth inhibition $(GI_{50})$ for the extracts were mostly below $30{\mu}g/ml$, and the extracts are considered as active inhibitory compounds on cancer cells.
