Fabrication of Electro-active Polymer Actuator Based on Transparent Graphene Electrode

  • The ionic polymer-metal composite (IPMC), a type of electro-active polymer material, has received enormous interest in various fields such as robotics, medical sensors, artificial muscles because it has many advantages of flexibility, light weight, high displacement, and low voltage activation, compare to traditional mechanical actuators. Mostly noble metal materials such as gold or platinum were used to form the electrode of an IPMC by using electroless plating process. Furthermore, carbon-based materials, which are carbon nanotube (CNT) and reduced graphene-CNT composite, were used to alter the electrode of IPMC. To form the electrode of IPMC, we employ the synthesized graphene on copper foil by chemical vapor deposition method and use the transfer process by using a support of PET/silicone film. The properties of graphene were evaluated by Raman spectroscopy, UV/Vis spectroscopy, and 4-point probe. The structure and surface of IPMC were analyzed via field emission scanning electron microscope. The fabricated IPMC performance such as displacement and operating frequency was measured in underwater.

  • 분자 에너지 준위, 분자구조, 흡수, 방출, 상호분자 반응, 또는 약하게 결합된 분자에너지, 광화학, 형광, PDT치료에 관한 연구를 수행하는데 분광계에서 CCD는 매우 중요하다. CCD는 현대 물리화학 분야에서 레이저 분광학에 의한 의공학 및 분자 구조의 연구에 필수적이다. 그리하여 CCD를 이용한 전자기 분광계의 설계 및 제작을 연구하였으며 프린트된 전자회로 및 포르폴린을 분석하였다. 예전에 CCD는 방송장비에만 사용한다고 생각했지만 현대에는 산업발전에 의한 응용으로 로봇공학, 기기분석 및 관측에 대한 산업적 요구에 더욱 많이 활용된다.

A New Inspection Method of PDP Electrode Pattern Defects

  • The display module of PDP consists of a pair of fine electrode patterned panels. For example, in case of 42" PDP, thousands of electrode patterns should be placed on panel, where length, width, and height of each pattern m one meter, 50${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, and 30${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ respectively. And pitch between patterns is around 200${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. Electrode patterns are frequently damaged during the production process, and thus might be broken. These breakage will result in open-circuited electrical characteristic of a pattern and/or open-circuited electrical characteristic between patterns. Therefore, inspection of pattern defects is the inevitable process to improve production yield rate of the panel. In this paper, we first review several types of PDP pattern defects which affects yield-rate of PDP. And, problems of inspecting such pattern defects by a typical inspection method is addressed. Then, a novel inspection method is proposed to overcome the difficulties, where some new components and the algorithm to detect the electrode defects are explored.ored.

Multi-Valued Decision Making for Transitional Stochastic Event: Determination of Sleep Stages through EEG Record

  • Multi-valued decision making for transitional stochastic events was newly derived based on conditional probability of database. The two values (on-off) decision making method without transition had been proposed by one of the author in a previous work for a purpose of realizing human on-off decision making. The current method is an extension of the previous on-off decision making. By combining the conditional probability and the transitional probability, the closed form of the algorithm for the multi-valued transitional decision making was derived. The proposed multi-valued decision making was successfully applied to the determination of the five levels of the vigilance of a subject during the EEG recording; awake stage, drowsy stage and sleeping stages (stage 1, stage 2/3, REM (rapid eye movement)). The method for determining the vigilance level can be directly usable for the two purposes; selection of awake EEG segments for automatic EEG interpretation, and determination of sleep stages through sleep EEG. The proposed multi-valued decision making with a mathematical background of the probability can be applicable widely, in industries and in medical fields for purposes of the multi-valued decision making.

Complexity Control Method of Chaos Dynamics in Recurrent Neural Networks

  • This paper demonstrates that the largest Lyapunov exponent $\lambda$ of recurrent neural networks can be controlled by a gradient method. The method minimizes a square error $e_{\lambda}=(\lambda-\lambda^{obj})^2$ where $\lambda^{obj}$ is desired exponent. The $\lambda$ can be given as a function of the network parameters P such as connection weights and thresholds of neurons' activation. Then changes of parameters to minimize the error are given by calculating their gradients $\partial\lambda/\partialP$. In a previous paper, we derived a control method of $\lambda$via a direct calculation of $\partial\lambda/\partialP$ with a gradient collection through time. This method however is computationally expensive for large-scale recurrent networks and the control is unstable for recurrent networks with chaotic dynamics. Our new method proposed in this paper is based on a stochastic relation between the complexity $\lambda$ and parameters P of the networks configuration under a restriction. Then the new method allows us to approximate the gradient collection in a fashion without time evolution. This approximation requires only $O(N^2)$ run time while our previous method needs $O(N^{5}T)$ run time for networks with N neurons and T evolution. Simulation results show that the new method can realize a "stable" control for larege-scale networks with chaotic dynamics.

  • This paper deals with the sensing ability of the smart sensor that has the sensing ability to distinguish materials according to the input condition changing. This is a study of dynamic characteristics of sensor. We have developed a new signal processing method that can distinguish among different materials. The smart sensor was developed for recognition of materials. Experiments and analysis were executed to estimate ability to recognize objects according to the input condition. First, we developed the advanced smart sensor. Second, we developed the new method, which has the capability sensing of different materials. Dynamic characteristics of the smart sensor were evaluated relatively through a new $R_{SAI}$ method. According to frequency changing, influence of the smart sensor are evaluated through a new recognition index ($R_{SAI}$) that ratio of sensing ability index. Applications of this method are for finding abnormal conditions of objects (auto-manufacturing), feeling of objects (medical product), robotics, safely diagnosis of structure, etc.

Avalanche and Bit Independence Properties of Photon-counting Double Random Phase Encoding in Gyrator Domain

  • In this paper, we evaluate cryptographic properties of a double random phase encoding (DRPE) scheme in the discrete Gyrator domain with avalanche and bit independence criterions. DRPE in the discrete Gyrator domain is reported to have higher security than traditional DRPE in the Fourier domain because the rotation angle involved in the Gyrator transform is viewed as additional secret keys. However, our numerical experimental results demonstrate that the DRPE in the discrete Gyrator domain has an excellent bit independence feature but does not possess a good avalanche effect property and hence needs to be improved to satisfy with acceptable avalanche effect that would be robust against statistical-based cryptanalysis. We compare our results with the avalanche and bit independence criterion (BIC) performances of the conventional DRPE scheme, and improve the avalanche effect of DRPE in the discrete Gyrator domain by integrating a photon counting imaging technique. Although the Gyrator transform-based image cryptosystem has been studied, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on a cryptographic evaluation of discrete Gyrator transform with avalanche and bit independence criterions.

적외선 센서용 극저온 용기의 냉각특성에 관한 실험적 연구 (An Experimental Study on the Cooling Characteristics of an Infrared Detector Cryochamber)

  • Infrared (IR) detectors are widely used for many applications, such as temperature measurement, intruder and fire detection, robotics and industrial equipment, thermoelstic stress analysis, medical diagnostics, and chemical analysis. Quantum detectors commonly need to be refrigerated below 80 K, and thus a cooling system should be equipped together with the detector system. The cooling load, which should be removed by the cooling system to maintain the nominal operating temperature of the detector, critically depends on the insulation efficiency of the cryochamber housing the detector. Thermal analysis of cryochamber includes the conduction heat transfer through a cold well, the gases conduction and gas outgassing, as well as radiation heat transfer, The transient cooling characteristics of an infrared detector cryochamber are investigated experimentally in the present study. The transient cooling load increases as the gas pressure is increased. Gas pressure becomes significant as the cooling process proceeds. Cool down time is also increased as the gas pressure is increased. It is also found that natural convection effects on cool down time become significant when the gas pressure is increased.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects on skin temperature, pain, muscle tone, and ROM after applying the massage robot "PIRO-ZERO" to 6 men and 4 women in their 20s who complained of non-specific pain in the shoulder or back for more than 12 weeks. As a result of the study, there was a significant increase in skin temperature not only in the area where the massage was applied, but also on the opposite side and throughout the body due to increased blood flow. Pain in the upper trapezius, rhomboid, and erector spinae muscle was decreased, and muscle tone in the erector spinae muscles was significantly decreased. There was a significant increase in ROM of neck and trunk flexion, which is thought to be because the massage reduced muscle tone around the spine, increasing flexibility. In the future, as the safety and effectiveness of massage robots are further verified and the pressure, speed, and path become more diverse, satisfaction is expected to increase.

뇌졸중 환자의 햅틱 로봇 기반 상지 재활 시 근육 동시활성도 분석 (Muscle Coactivation Analysis during Upper-Limb Rehabilitation using Haptic Robotics in Stroke Survivors)

  • This study analyzed the occurrence of abnormal muscle coactivations based on the assistance of upper limb weight during reaching task in stroke patients. Nine chronic stroke survivors with hemiplegia performed reaching tasks using a programmable haptic robot. Electromyography (EMG) coactivation levels in the upper limb muscles were analyzed using a linear model describing the activation levels of two muscles when the patient's upper limb weight was assisted at 0%, 25%, and 50%. As the upper limb weight assistance of the haptic robot decreased, the magnitude of the EMG signal in both the deltoid and biceps muscles increased simultaneously on both the paretic and non-paretic sides. However, no difference was found between the paretic and non-paretic sides when comparing the slope of the linear model describing the activation relationship between the deltoid and biceps. The aforementioned results suggest that in some stroke survivors, the deltoids, triceps, and biceps on the paretic side may not be abnormally coupled when supporting the upper limbs against gravity. Furthermore, these results suggest that the combination of haptic robots and EMG analysis might be utilized for evaluating abnormal coactivations in stroke patients.
