Beta-Meta: a meta-analysis application considering heterogeneity among genome-wide association studies

  • Many packages for a meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have been developed to discover genetic variants. Although variations across studies must be considered, there are not many currently-accessible packages that estimate between-study heterogeneity. Thus, we propose a python based application called Beta-Meta which can easily process a meta-analysis by automatically selecting between a fixed effects and a random effects model based on heterogeneity. Beta-Meta implements flexible input data manipulation to allow multiple meta-analyses of different genotype-phenotype associations in a single process. It provides a step-by-step meta-analysis of GWAS for each association in the following order: heterogeneity test, two different calculations of an effect size and a p-value based on heterogeneity, and the Benjamini-Hochberg p-value adjustment. These methods enable users to validate the results of individual studies with greater statistical power and better estimation precision. We elaborate on these and illustrate them with examples from several studies of infertility-related disorders.

  • 3D 프린터란 3차원으로 특정 물건을 찍어내는 프린터로, 입체적으로 만들어진 설계도만 있으면 종이에 인쇄하듯 3차원 공간 안에 실제 사물을 만들어 낼 수 있는 기기다. 최근 3D 프린팅 기술은 의학 분야에서 다양하게 활용되고 있으며, 생체 의학적 응용은 지금까지 가장 중요한 연구 주제 중 하나로 주목 받아왔다. 3D 프린팅 기술은 의료 뿐 아니라 자동차, 항공, 선반 등 제조업 전반에 혁신적인 변화를 일으키고 있다. 현재 3D 프린터의 의료산업 적용 분야는 가상 시뮬레이션, 맞춤형의료보형물 제작, 의료 인력 교육 실습 등이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 의료서비스를 위한 3D 프린팅 기술과 적용사례를 비교 분석하였다.

  • The objective of this study is to identify the selective application targets for reporting on details of supply of class 1 and 2 medical devices as part of the improvement of the reports on details of supply of medical device system, and to analyze its effectiveness. Therapeutic materials covered by health insurance and secondhand medical devices were chosen based on the transparency of health insurance coverage and the management of medical device distribution. As a result, approximately 85% of groups can be excluded from the reporting requirements compared to reporting all items under Class 1 and 2 medical devices. This is expected to enhance the efficiency of supply reporting tasks. Additionally, the information on supply details managed by the regulatory authority can be utilized for statistical analysis and periodic monitoring, serving as fundamental data for the development of medical device-related policies and research in the field of medical devices.

Anti-rheumatoidal effects of Uncaria Tomentosa and Maytenus by a prolonged application

  • Uncaria Tomentosa and Maytenus are known to have anti-inflammatory and anti-rheumatoidal effects after either a single application or application over a short-term period. We applied these natural products to Wister rats every day for two weeks and investigated the effects of this long-term application on inflammation. This was done by measuring footpad edema, which was induced by a locally injected carrageenan. There was a dramatic reduction in edema in both U. Tomentosa- and Maytenus-treated rats; furthermore, the reduction lasted as long as three days for rats treated with U. Tomentosa. When the Balb/C mice underwent similar treatment for one month, the level of IgM in the blood of U. Tomentosa-treated mice decreased while the level of IgG in Maytenus-treated mice increased. This suggests that the long lasting effects of U. Tomentosa may be related to a low level of IgM and the subclass switch from IgM to IgG. Since the anti-inflammatory effects of U. Tomentosa lasts for three days, it may prove useful in treating rheumatoid arthritis when applied for an extended period of time, especially since this product is known to have minimal side effects.

비정상 자궁 출혈의 한약 치료에 대한 연구 - 제반 한의학 문헌의 붕루문을 중심으로 - (A Study on Korean Medical Treatment of Abnormal Uterine Bleeding - Based on Benglou Chapters of Classical Medical Texts -)

  • Objectives : To examine Korean Medical treatment of abnormal uterine bleeding in classical texts, along with their clinical applicability. Methods : The Benglou chapters in the Donguibogam, Fuqingzhunuke, Xuezhenglun were examined in terms of diagnostic pattern and treatment. Benglou chapters of other medical texts were referenced as well. Basic Korean Medical knowledge of abnormal uterine bleeding and its clinical application were studied. Results : As abnormal uterine bleeding is generally caused by internal damage or deficiency from excessive labor, sexual activity, food, emotional stress, specific causes for each individual should be considered when approaching each case. Conclusions : Korean Medical treatment allows for a tailored approach to each pathology according to age and duration of illness, and has strength in dealing with various situations such as emergency situations, excessive bleeding, blood stagnation. As such, application of Korean Medicine in abnormal uterine bleeding is highly appropriate.

수지첨부 재건 후 거머리 사용시 발생하는 문제점에 대한 고찰 (The Problem of Leech Application in Digital Replantation)

  • Over the past several years, countless patients have benefitted from the use of leeches in microsurgery. As we know, leeches are used to overcome the problem of venous congestion by creating prolonged localized bleeding uniquely characteristics of leech bite. Venous congestion, a common complication of digital replantation, often has been treated through surgical repair like arteriovenous anastomosis. The leech produces a number of important substances which contribute to the special property of the bite, including an anticoagulant, a local vasodilator and local anesthetics. The bite usually bleeds for 1 to 2 hours and under special circumstances may bleed for up to 24 hours. So venous congestion is relieved. However, leeches increase the possibility of infection through their gut content. Infection associated medical leech application is significant risk. Other risk include allergic reaction, adverse psychologic reaction and blood loss requiring transfusion. The 65 cases of medical leech application were performed between August, 1997 and May, 2000 according to an established protocol. The complication were 18 cases ; infection (13 cases), hemorrhage (2 cases), allergic reaction (1 case), psychologic problem (1 case) and hypochromic anemia (1 case). Then our study was performed on the base of indication. As a result, Aeromonas hydrophilia was cultured from gut of medical leech and Klebsiella, Staphylococcus and Pseudomonas were cultured from media. We present the clinical risk-benefit of the medical leech therapy through several cases following digital replantation.

  • 최근 시간적, 공간적, 의료기술 적용의 한계를 극복하기 위하여 의료 기술과 IT 기술의 융합을 시도하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 응급 의료 서비스에 적용할 수 있는 구급 활동을 지원하기 위한 앱을 개발하였다. 개발된 스마트 구급 활동 지원 앱은 응급 환자의 상황 파악 및 구급 일지 등을 쉽게 작성하고, 이를 원격지 의료 지도 의사에게 전달하여 응급조치 및 병원 대응이 신속하게 이루어질 수 있도록 할 수 있다.

내과 중환자실 환자의 혈당조절 프로토콜 개발 (Development of a Blood Glucose Control Protocol for Medical ICU Patients)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop a blood glucose control protocol for medical intensive care unit (ICU) patients. Methods: The blood glucose control protocol was developed through the following process: selection of preliminary protocols, clinical application, and evaluation. The clinical validity of the protocol was measured by application, along with examination of the effects of the Yale and the Mayo blood glucose protocols. Seventeen medical ICU adults patients whose blood glucose levels exceeded 200 mg/dL consecutively participated in the study. The development protocol was evaluated by an expert group. Results: Incidence of normal blood glucose levels (p=.041) increased significantly in the Yale protocol application group. Also, incidence of severe hyperglycemia (p=.029) decreased significantly and time to target range of glucose (p=.023) decreased significantly after application of the Yale protocol. However, there was no significant difference in incidence of hypoglycemia (p=.666) between three groups. Conclusion: Using the developed protocol as a basis for the modified Yale protocol was found to be effective in improving the state of blood glucose control for medical ICU patients and is expected to be used for nursing intervention in critical care.

  • Objectives : This study aims to examine the efficacy and application of Cannabis according to its parts. Methods : Contents on efficacy, treatment, and application of Cannabis in Material Medica and other texts of East Asian Medicine were collected and interpreted to deduce each characteristic. Results : Cannabis was found to be applicable to various wind symptoms and wind stroke, various pain and injuries, skin diseases, blockage or leaking of urine or feces, disease related to genitalia and anus, chronic ague, women's disease related to menstruation, birth, pregnancy, and to have the effects of heightening perceptive and sensory organs, detoxification and anesthesia, stimulating hair growth, and eradicating parasites. It drives out wind-heat pathogenic qi, circulates qi and blood, which allowed it to be applied not only to blockages but to symptoms of leakage. In other words, Cannabis was used when both excess and deficiency diseases were present, the former caused by acute blockage and the latter accompanied by stagnation. Conclusions : Based on the findings of this study, future researches on the efficacy and application of Cannabis could be done more systematically. In line with recent trend of wide application of medical Cannabis, we hope for it to be more actively used in the field of East Asian Medicine based on objective evidence.
