  • Objective: Although the government acknowledged Korean Medical Doctors as official health care providers since 1951, criticism regarding its modernity persisted. This paper focuses on the medical dispute between Korean and Western Medicine in 1950s risen from the problem of modernization of Korean Medicine. Method: This paper looked into the medical dispute between Korean and Western Medicine in 1950s through "EE LIM". "EE LIM" is a scholarly journal published by Korean Medical doctor Bae Won-Sik. Articles regarding the medical dispute between Korean and Western Medicine were selected, categorized and analyzed. Result: The main questions against Korean Medicine were: whether it was scientific or not, and whether there was a possibility of systematization. Several opinions were brought up on these issues. 1) Some people criticized Korean Medicine as being unscientific based on modern science. 2) Others emphasized the identity of Korean Medicine against the critics. 3) Another group of people wanted to study Korean Medicine using modern methods and obtain merits from both sides. Conclusion: The different understanding of the term 'science' led to diverse discussions on the direction of Korean Medicine's progression. The narrow meaning of science only considers Korean Medicine as an object of modern scientific and medical study. But if the meaning is broadened, containing empirical aspects, Korean Medicine can be included as a category of science based on its clinical utility.

  • The purpose of this study is to explains consumers' medical discourse embedded in the consumption of oriental medicine and health functional foods. Despite the fact that both of oriental medicine and western medicine is legally accepted, people tend to recognize that accurate diagnosis is possible only in the latter. As the discourse that oriental medicine, compared with western medicine, has an auxiliary position is widely spreaded, the rivalry between herbal medicine and health functional foods come to be formed. And it led to a close correlation between the decrease of herbal medicine consumption and the growth of health supplement market. Herbal medicine is compared to red ginseng, one of the representative health supplement. Negative notion such as using an Asian herb from China and side effect of hepatotoxicity influences herbal medicine consumption. This study argues two conclusion. First, the correlation between the consumption of herbal medicine and that of health functional foods results from the discourse of scientific reconstruction, standardization, and commercialization all of which come from globalization discourse. Second, medical discourse embedded in these commodity, in the end, has impact on agricultural production.

  • Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most prevalent cancers in the world and deeply threatens people's health, especially in China. Techniques of early diagnosis, prevention and prediction are still being discovered, among which the approaches based on single nucleotide polymorphisms in microRNA genes (miRNA SNPs) are newly proposed and show prospective potential. In particular, the association between SNPs in miRNA196a-2 (rs11614913) and miRNA146a (rs2910164) and HCC has been investigated. However, the conclusions made were conflicting, possibly due to insufficient sample size or population stratification. Further confirmations in well-designed large samples are still required. In this study, we verified the association between these two SNPs and the susceptibility to HCC by MassARRAY assay in a 2,000 large Chinese case-control sample. Significant association between rs11614913 and HCC was confirmed. Subjects with the genotype of CT+TT or T allele in rs11614913 were more resistant to HCC (CT+TT: OR (95% CI)=0.73 (0.57-0.92), P=0.01; T allele: OR (95% CI)=0.85 (0.75-0.97), P=0.02) and HBV-related HCC (CT+TT: OR (95% CI)=0.69 (0.53-0.90), P=0.01; T allele: OR (95% CI)=0.82 (0.71-0.95), P=0.01). The affected carriers of CT or TT also tended to have lower levels of serum AFP (P=0.01). This study demonstrated a role of rs11614913 in the etiology of HCC. Further research should focus on the clinical use of this miRNA SNP, so as to facilitate conquering HCC.

  • This study is about King Kyung-jong's medical history written on "The Daily Records of Royal Secretariat of Chosun Dynasty". Kyung-jong, the 20th King of Chosun was born in 1688 as a prince and passed away in 1725. When he was prince, his main diseases were some infectious things; for example, smallpox, measles, a sort of malaria, a sort of mumps etc. But the time he was king, his main diseases were related unenergetic(虛證). According to "The Daily Records of Royal Secretariat of Chosun Dynasty" yak-bang(藥房) records, some informations about his health are different from general knowledges. At first, His father's dead is more related his health than his mother's dead. Second, he was fat, not thin(or desiccate). Third, his infertility was not caused his mother when she died. Fourth, he was regarded as one of psychological healthy person. And not exactly related Kyung-jong's health, in "The Daily Records of Royal Secretariat of Chosun Dynasty" at Kyung=jong's era, there are some meaningful informations at medical history. One is a doctor who was smallpox specialist. His name is Yoo-Sang, he treated three of Chosun's King very perfectly and his family worked for the royal family's health for 150 years, especially treating smallpox. the other is prescription Gamijojungtang(加味調中湯), Kyung-jong's favorite prescription. This prescription is considered royal special prescription at Chosun.

  • Smallpox and measles might be the typical epidemics through Choson Danasty. Especially Sookjong was the first king who suffered from smallpox during the period of his reign. This study was examined critically focused on the Clinical Records about Smallpox which occurred in the 9th year of Sookjong's reign. The clinical records in Seungjeongwon Ilgi("承政院日記") was the main source and the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty was reffered. It tells us that Sookjong caught infectious disease, smallpox spread in town and the whole process of smallpox. Seungmagalgeuntang(升麻葛根湯) and hwadoktang(火毒湯) were given at the early term for treating Sookjong's smallpox, but later on, Bowontang(補元湯) was given for the treatment of smallpox. It showed us the medical view which placed emphasis on the vital force of human body. A dermatologist, Yoo Sang had joined since the beginning of the treatment and Siyakchung(侍藥廳) was established for Sookjong. Sasunghoichuntang(四聖回天湯) which was Chunyoohyung(全有亨)'s prescription showed us enough clinical experience and the ways of treatments. At the same time, the medical culture at that time was well known through the fact that smallpox was taboo among the royal family.

  • This article will introduce the changes of the historiography of the Chinese medicine which have been made during the last several decades. These will be described with the changes in the image of the Chinese medicine that has been occupied in our mind. We regard Chinese medicine as a rational knowledge system which is based on the theory of Yin-Yang and Five phases. Therefore we draw a dear line of demarcation between Chinese medicine and irrational cure means such as religious prayer, charms and folk remedies which have no theoretical background. We also think the medical lineages continue virtually uninterrupted over the whole time of the history of Chinese medicine that began from Huangdineijing(皇帝內徑) and Shanghanlun(傷寒論). And we consider Chinese medicine as a sort of science, and suppose there has been one universal and homogeneous medical system in the mainland China. This image, however, has been changing rapidly. These changes come from the join of externalists who were trained as historian not physician, for studying the history of Chinese medicine, and the methodological innovations of historiography which was influenced by the methodologies of anthropology, social history, cultural history and the discourse of postmodemism.

  • Objective: This study compared the status of chronic diseases among immigrants and the Korean population. Methods: This study was conducted on 153 immigrants living in Gwangju Metropolitan City in 2022. For comparison, 459 Koreans were selected using the 2021 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). A survey was conducted on the management status of hypertension, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia using a questionnaire. Results: Immigrants were significantly more likely to have hypertension (50.3% vs. 24.2%, p<0.001) and diabetes (19.0% vs. 11.5%, p=0.002) than Koreans. In awareness, immigrants had significantly lower rates of hypertension (57.1% vs. 73.0%, p=0.031) and hyperlipidemia (immigrants 25.4% vs. 44.5%, p=0.006). In treatment rates, immigrants had significantly lower rates of hypertension (40.3% vs. 69.4%, <0.001) and hyperlipidemia (17.9% vs. 39.6%, p=0.003). In control rates, immigrants had significantly lower rates of hypertension (18.2% vs. 62.2%, <0.001) than Koreans. Conclusions: Chronic diseases are common among immigrants, but awareness, treatment, and control rates are low, so education and prevention policies are critical to improving immigrants' access to medical care and raising awareness.
