  • Purpose:This study was to determine whether median nerve mobilization has any effect on the recovery of muscle power and the reduction of pain for the patients with carpal tunnel syndrome. Methods:20 patients suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome were randomly divided into two groups: 10 subjects treated both with electrical therapy and median nerve mobilization(experimental group) and the other 10 subjects treated only with electrical therapy(control group). The therapy was taken three times a week for 3 weeks. Results:The grip strength increased in both groups. However, the experimental group showed more significant treatment effect than the control group, and the significant changes appeared every week during the experiment period. In terms of pain, both groups showed significant effects. But the experimental group showed but more significant treatment effect than the control group, and the significant changes appeared every week during the experiment period. Conclusions:It was significantly more effective for the patients with carpal tunnel syndrome to apply median nerve mobilization during the electrical therapy in order to reduce pain and to increase grip strength, compared with the method only using electrical therapy. Further research should be conducted to generalize these results in terms of the clinical effectiveness of the nerve mobilization.

  • Given that toxic substances are diffused by the various movements of the atmosphere, it is very important to evaluate the risks associated with this phenomenon. When analyzing the behavioral characteristics of these atmospheric diffusion models, the main input data are the wind speed and wind direction among the meteorological data. In particular, it is known that a certain wind direction occurs in summer and winter in Korea under the influence of westerlies and monsoons. In this study, synoptic meteorological observation data provided by the Korea Meteorological Administration were analyzed from January 1, 2012 to the end of August of 2022 to understand the regional wind characteristics of nuclear power plants and surrounding areas. The selected target areas consisted of 16 weather stations around the Hanbit, Kori, Wolsong, Hanul, and Saeul nuclear power plants that are currently in operation. The analysis was based on the temperature, wind direction, and wind speed data at those locations. Average, maximum, minimum, median, and mode values were analyzed using long-term annual temperature, wind speed, and wind direction data. Correlation coefficient values were also analyzed to determine the linear relationships among the temperature, wind direction, and wind speed. Among the 16 districts, Uljin had the highest wind speed. The median wind speed values for each region were lower than the average wind speed values. For regions where the average wind speed exceeds the median wind speed, Yeongju, Gochang, Gyeongju, Yeonggwang, and Gimhae were calculated as 0.69 m s-1, 0.54m s-1, 0.45m s-1, 0.4m s-1, and 0.36m s-1, respectively. The average temperature in the 16 regions was 13.52 degrees Celsius; the median temperature was 14.31 degrees and the mode temperature was 20.69 degrees. The average regional temperature standard deviation was calculated and found to be 9.83 degrees. The maximum summer temperatures were 39.7, 39.5, and 39.3 in Yeongdeok, Pohang, and Yeongcheon, respectively. The wind directions and speeds in the 16 regions were plotted as a wind rose graph, and the characteristics of the wind direction and speed of each region were investigated. It was found that there is a dominant wind direction correlated with the topographical characteristics in each region. However, the linear relationship between the wind speed and direction by region varied from 0.53 to 0.07. Through this study, by evaluating meteorological observation data on a long-term synoptic scale of ten years, regional characteristics were found.

  • This study is to decrease compound noise in x-ray films. This study compared Signal to noise ratio(SNR), Peak signal to noise ratio(PSNR), Mean square error(MSE) to surface of the earth. In addition, we evaluated noise elimination effect according to the kernel size of Median filter. This experiments show that some filters are useful by finding image that is near in circle image comparing circle picture with each processed picture. In noise power value, when cutoff frequency was compared with other filters of cutoff frequency. Cutoff frequency of $2/3\pi{\sim}3/4\pi$ is good and it shows good SNR and PSNR. Therefore, it can display high filter effect. As Median Filter's Kernel size grows SNR value gets bigger, which shows better filter effect. Most pictures are distorted after filter application in medical treatment image. It is important to keep spatial resolution in most medical images. Visual estimation as well as quantitative indicators should be necessary for a better image.

  • In this study, analytical works for the induced winds due to traveling vehicles on highway have been conducted by Computation Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The traveling condition was considered in two cases: (a) single direction and (b) bi-direction. The analysis was focused on the effects of the induced winds on the upper part of a median strip while the aerodynamic characteristics of the vehicles were directly analyzed in the previous studies. From the analysis results, it has been found that the maximum magnitude of the induced winds was 2.2 m/s when the vehicles travel with the speed of 50 km/h. Additionally, 4.0 m/s and 5.3 m/s were obtained with the speed of 90 km/h and 120 km/h, respectively. Especially, the induced winds was generated about 84% of the vehicle speed at 1.0 m above from the median strip when the vehicles travel with the speed of 120 km/h. The induced winds was maintained during the very short period while the traveling. conclusively, it is noted that the wind power generation can be possible by using the small-sized wind power generators installed on median strips throughout the analytical results in this study.

  • Critical and allowable shear stress acting on the mattress revetment, is presented in this study. First of all, shear stress at each spot is computed when the hydraulic power act on the waterway. Secondly, median diameter of the filling rocks is computed using shear stress and Shields coefficient which are used to decide the critical motion of the particle. Finally, the range of critical and allowable shear stress is estimated which meet the particle stability and indicated that the mattress is a stable hydraulic structure in comparison with the riprap. Therefore the required median diameter of riprap is three times higher than that of mattress. Contrarily, this study also analyzed that resisting power of mattress to shear stress is three times higher than that of riprap on the same size.

  • In the present study, thirteen healthy volunteers performed lumbar extension exercises at 48$^{\circ}$/s, loaded by 40, 50, 60kg(about 44, 55, 66% of maximum voluntary contraction). During the whole period of exercises, electromyographic(EMG) signal was measured in the erector spinae muscle in order to determine muscle fatigue. Using the wavelet transform, EMG signal was separated by various frequency ranges in the time-frequency domain, and muscle fatigue was analyzed, comparing with the results based on the median frequency(MDF). MDF shifted toward the lower frequency ranges with the muscle fatigue, showing a single characteristic frequency. On the other hand, wavelet transform of EMG signals resulted in increased power amplitude in lower frequency ranges(0-125Hz), and decreased power amplitude in higher frequency ranges(375-468Hz). This study reveals that the muscle fatigue during dynamic movement is explained better by wavelet analysis.

  • Purpose: To determine whether a fatiguing clench significantly affects the changes in pressure pain threshold (PPT) in men compared to women. Methods: The changes of PPTs from before to after a sustained clench in 12 men and 12 women were obtained. We used a decrease in median frequencies of surface electromyography (EMG) power spectra from the start to the end of the sustained clench as evidence of fatigue. Endurance time for the clench was used as a covariate. Results: The median frequencies decreased after the clench in both the anterior temporalis and masseter muscles, did not differ with the muscle or the gender of the subjects, and none of the interaction terms were significant. The PPTs were lower for women for both muscles, were decreased after the sustained clench, but failed to show the hypothesized gender by time interaction. Conclusions: Our results show that women have lower PPTs than men, but do not respond differently than men to jaw muscle fatigue.
