Control of Thin Film Media Microstructure by Using Very Thin Seedlayer Material with Different Affinity for Oxygen

  • To reduce the grain size and the media noise in a typical CrMo/CoCrPtB longitudinal media, a sputtering process which includes the exposure of oxygen onto the surface of CrW$_x$ (x=0, 25, 50, 75, 100 at.%) and CrTi$_{15}$ seedlayers with the thickness of 0.5 nm have been utilized. The main results are: (1) the media grain size and the media noise are reduced when using CrW$_x$ (x=0, 25, 50 at.%) seedlayers, and not reduced when using CrTils or CrW$_x$ (x=75, 100 at.%) seedlayers, (2) AES and RHEED results suggest that W seedlayer, which has the highest melting point, forms layer-like film with very small and dense island grain, due to its high free surface energy and low mobility. On the other hand, CrW$_{50}$ and Cr seedlayers, which have lower melting point than W seedlayer, form island film, (3) to effectively reduce the media grain size and improve the media signal to noise ratio, it is essential to utilize a very thin Cr-based seedlayer with high affinity for oxygen and which forms island-like structure, such as CrW$_{50}$ seedlayer.

Health Risk Assessment for Artificial Turf Playgrounds in School Athletic Facilities: Multi-route Exposure Estimation for Use Patterns

  • Hazardous chemicals can be released from artificial turf used in some school playgrounds. To distinguish between Health risk assessment (HRA) exposure scenarios for this study, the ratio of elementary, middle and high schools was considered before final selection. Considering exposure pathways (inhalational, oral and dermal), media and materials were examined, targeting hazardous chemicals released from artificial turf playground-related products. Upon evaluation, the quantity of infill chips was shown to exceed the domestic product content standard (90 mg/kg) at eight (16%) out of 50 schools. PAHs were shown to exceed standards (10 mg/kg) at two (4%) out of the 50 schools. The excess cancer risk (ECR) of carcinogens was shown to be $1{\times}10^{-6}$ in most users for the worst exposure scenario. In children with pica, who represented the most extreme exposure group, the ECR was expected to be as high as $1{\times}10^{-4}$, showing the low risk level of carcinogens. The hazard index (HI) for individual chemicals was shown to be low, at around 0.1 or less, except for children with pica, according to the mean exposure scenario of artificial turf playground exposure. However, the HI was shown to exceed 1.0 in children with pica. Therefore, no direct health risk was found in using artificial turf playgrounds and urethane flooring tracks for the mean exposure scenario, except in children with pica.

Nanowastes treatment in environmental media

  • Objectives This paper tried to review a recent research trend for the environmental exposure of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) and its removal efficiency in the nanowaste treatment plants. Methods The studies on the predicted environmental concentrations (PEC) of ENMs obtained by exposure modeling and treatment (or removal) efficiency in nanowaste treatment facilities, such as wastewater treatment plant (WTP) and waste incineration plant (WIP) were investigated. The studies on the landfill of nanowastes also were investigated. Results The Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology group has led the way in developing methods for estimating ENM production and emissions. The PEC values are available for surface water, wastewater treatment plant effluents, biosolids, sediments, soils, and air. Based on the PEC modeling, the major routes for the environmental exposure of the ENMs were found as WTP effluents/sludge. The ENMs entered in the WTP were 90-99% removed and accumulated in the activated sludge and sludge cake. Additionally, the waste ash released from the WIP contain ENMs. Ultimately, landfills are the likely final destination of the disposed sludge or discarded ENMs products. Conclusions Although the removal efficiency of the ENMs using nanowaste treatment facilities is acceptable, the ENMs were accumulated on the sludge and then finally moved to the landfill. Therefore, the monitoring for the ENMs in the environment where the WTP effluent is discharged or biomass disposed is required to increase our knowledge on the fate and transport of the ENMs and to prevent the unintentional exposure (release) in the environment.

Internet Exposure and Plastic Consumption Behaviors : The Mediating Effect of Social Norms (인터넷 노출과 플라스틱 소비 행동 : 사회적 규범의 매개효과)

  • This study examined the effect of Internet exposure on plastic consumption behaviors, and the mediating effect of social norms. The survey participants in this study were 220 college students. Collected data were analyzed by the SPSS 26.0 and PROCESS macro 4.1 (model 4). The results of this study showed that the relationship between Internet exposure and intention to plastic consumption was mediated by descriptive norms. These results suggest that Internet exposure and social norms are important factors that can promote or constrain plastic consumption behaviors. Based on these results, we presented the theoretical and practical implications of this study.

The Effect of Risk Issue Exposure and Social Capital on Risk Perception in Social Media (소셜 미디어 환경에서 위험이슈 노출과 사회자본이 위험인식에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the factors that influence the risk perception of reality on social media. Specifically, we analyzed how exposure to risk issues through media and bridging/bonding social capital influence social and personal risk perception. Here, we categorized risk issues into infectious diseases, sex crimes, and radioactive contamination. Findings are as follows. The effect that the type of media and social capital have on risk perception vary depending on the risk issues. Regarding issues of disease and radiation, bridging social capital had a positive effect on social risk perception whereas bonding social capital had a negative effect on personal risk perception. In the case of sex crimes, bonding social capital affected both social and personal risk perception negatively, and an interaction effect between exposures and social capital could be found. The significance of this study is that it considers both media variables from previous studies and social capital variables essential to social media studies and combines the two in order to study the factors that influence risk perception.

  • CCD(Charge-Coupled Device) 혹은 CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor)와 같은 소자를 이용하여 빛을 전기적 신호인 Image로 재구성하는 촬상소자(Color Capture Device)는 촬영환경이 어두워지면 Dynamic Range가 작아지고, Noise가 상대적으로 심해진다[1][2]. 본 논문에서는 촬영 환경이 어두울 때, Resolution을 Preserving하는 Pixel Pitch가 큰 촬상 소자와 Motion Blur를 억제하는 Exposure Time이 긴 촬상 소자의 조합을 신호처리로 구현하여, 신호의 Power를 향상시켜 Dynamic Range를 키우고 Noise의 Boost-up을 억제하여 SNR(Signal to Noise Ratio)을 향상시키는 방식으로, 촬상 장치의 감도를 향상시켜 화질을 개선하는 방법을 제안한다.

Evaluation of Factors Affecting Glomerular Filtration Rate by Contrast Media in Patients with Coronary Angiography (심혈관 조영술 시행 환자의 조영제 사용 시 사구체여과율 변화에 영향을 미치는 인자들 평가)

  • Performance of coronary angiography for exact diagnosis and treatments of cardiovascular disease have been increased recently and it also brings increase of the contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) referred from increasing use of radiological contrast agents. The variation of estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) is an indicator of CIN, which is known to increase when renal function is decreased. Therefore, this study was to evaluate the affecting factors including concomitant drug on variation of eGFR of patients who underwent coronary angiography according to the conditions of renal function. Medical records of 66 patients were evaluated retrospectively and the patients underwent coronary angiography or angioplasty with nonionic and isotonic contrast media (iodixanol) at Chungnam national university hospital from 1 Jan 2008 to 30 Jul 2010. Patients group was divided into 2 groups; the patients in stages 3-4 chronic kidney disease (CKD) and the patients in stage 2 CKD. Each group was researched about the effect of concomitant drug and clinical characteristics on eGFR variation. The change of eGFR was compared among baseline and 2 or 3 day after coronary angiography. In results, the eGFR variation in group over age 75 was significantly decreased after radiological contrast agents exposure (p $$\leq_-$$ 0.05). The eGFR variation in anemia was significantly decreased after radiological contrast agents exposure in stage 2 CKD (p > 0.05). The eGFR variation in group under $HbA_{1c}$ 6.5% was significantly decreased after radiological contrast agents exposure in stages 3-4 CKD (p $$\leq_-$$ 0.05). The eGFR variation by taking statins, angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors, calcium channel blockers and nitroglycerin was increased after radiological contrast agents exposure in stage 2 CKD (p $$\leq_-$$ 0.05). The eGFR variation by using of diuretics was significantly decreased after radiological contrast agents exposure in stages 3-4 CKD (p $$\leq_-$$ 0.05). The eGFR variation by taking statins, nitroglylcerin was increased after radiological contrast agents exposure in stages 3-4 CKD(p > 0.05). The eGFR variation in group over contrast dosage 150 ml was significantly decreased after radiological contrast agents exposure in stages 3-4 CKD (p $$\leq_-$$ 0.05). Therefore, when undergoing coronary angiography, contrast dosage should be minimized less than 150 ml, and diuretics should be restricted as possible in stages 3-4 CKD. Patients over age 75 require special attention to prevent CIN, and if patients undergo coronary angiography in stages 3-4 CKD, $HbA_{1c}$ is also requried to maintain below 6.5% to prevent CIN.

A Correlation Study between the Environmental, Personal Exposures and Biomarkers for Volatile Organic Compounds (대기 중 휘발성유기오염물질의 환경, 개인 및 인체 노출의 상관성 연구)

  • Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are an important public health problem throughout the world. Many important questions remain to be addressed in assessing exposure to these compounds. Because they are ubiquitous and highly volatile, special techniques must be applied in the analytical determination of VOCs. Personal exposure measurements are needed to evaluate the relationship between microenvironmental concentrations and actual exposures. It is also important to investigate exposure frequency, duration, and intensity, as well as personal exposure characteristics. In addition to air monitoring, biological monitoring may contribute significantly to risk assessment by allowing estimation of absorbed doses, rather than just the external exposure concentrations, which are evaluated by environmental and personal monitoring. This study was conducted to establish the analytic procedure of VOCs in air, blood, urine and exhaled breath and to evaluate the relationships among these environmental media. The subjects of this study were selected because they are occupationally exposed to high levels of VOCs. Environmental, personal, blood, urine and exhalation samples were collected. Purge & trap, thermal desorber, gas chromatography and mass selective detector were used to analyze the collected samples. Analytical procedures were validated with the“break through test”, 'quot;recovery test for storage and transportation”,“method detection limit test”and“inter-laboratory QA/QC study”. Assessment of halogenated compounds indicted that they were significantly correlated to each other (p value < 0.01). In a similar manner, aromatic compounds were also correlated, except in urine sample. Linear regression was used to evaluate the relationships between personal exposures and environmental concentrations. These relationships for aromatic and halogenated are as follows: Halogen $s_{personal}$ = 3.875+0.068Halogen $s_{environmet}$, ($R^2$= .930) Aromatic $s_{personal}$ = 34217.757-31.266Aromatic $s_{environmet}$, ($R^2$= .821) Multiple regression was used to evaluate the relationship between exposures and various exposure deter-minants including, gender, duration of employment, and smoking history. The results of the regression model-ins for halogens in blood and aromatics in urine are as follows: Halogen $s_{blood}$ = 8.181+0.246Halogen $s_{personal}$+3.975Gender ($R^2$= .925), Aromatic $s_{urine}$ = 249.565+0.135Aromatic $s_{personal}$ -5.651 D.S ($R^2$ = .735), In conclusion, we have established analytic procedures for VOC measurement in biological and environmental samples and have presented data demonstrating relationships between VOCs levels in biological media and environmental samples.   • Nevertheless the serious environmental pollution in Korea has been discussed in concern with health effect, the significant effect are not determined easily. Toxicological method has been used to establish safe levels of exposure for environmental pollutants to have threshold health effect below which significant effects are unlikely to occur. However the conventional method cannot to establish safe levels of exposure for non-threshold pollutants have been used to express comprehensive pollution degree, not in detailed toxic effects. Acceptable exposure or risk levels are decides by policymakers who consider descriptions and estimates of risks together with social and economic benefits. This paper focuses on the concept development of risk assessment and describes some risks of environmental pollution based on the surveyed date in Korea. The current concepts of risk assessment in policy descisions can be explored and areas for possible improvement, given current scientific knowledge are identified. The experience of foreign countries can provide a realistic basis for evaluating the existing data of environmental pollutants. To improve the environmental quality, risk regulation should be managed as soon as possible in Korea.

  • Recent impact of 4th industrial revolution is increasing usage of IoT technology along with smartphones and tablet PC. However blue light emitted from electronic devices such as smartphones and tablet PC causes detrimental change to human bodies. As the controversy over the harmfulness of blue light became known through the media and various communities, related markets were formed, and various blocking films, software, and vision protection monitors were released. In this paper focuses on utilizing IoT technology to protect human organizations from blue light. It presents anti-blue light system which prevents excessive exposure to blue light through Arduino module such as ultrasound, piezo buzzer and blue light measurement module.
