  • Because of both precise measurement and efficient quality control, coordinate measuring machines(CMMs) have been widely used in the industry. The purpose of this paper is to present a method to estimate the CMM measurement uncertainty using design of experiments. A factorial design is applied to carry out the performance test proposed by ISO 10360 and to investigate CMM measurement errors associated to orientation and length of the length bar. In order to assess the measurement uncertainty for the performance test, an analysis of the uncertainty components that make up the uncertainty budget has been carried out. The procedure for evaluating the uncertainty of it follows GUM ("Guide to the expression of uncertainty in measurement"). The results show that the proposed method is suitable to investigate CMM performance and determine the contribution of machine variables to measurement uncertainty.

  • This paper describes the design and performance of a hovering AUV constructed at KMOU (Korea Maritime and Ocean University). Before the field test, we analyzed the dynamic performance of the AUV using a simulation program made by Matlab & Simulink. Also, a PID controller was designed to control the thrusters. Using 4 thrusters (2 vertical and 2 horizontal), the AUV could be controlled using dynamic motion with 4-DOF. A simulation and field test were conducted with way-point tracking, maintaining the desired depth. To perform way-point tracking, the AUV can be fine-tuned to the desired heading angle through the LOS (Line Of Sight) method. This paper shows the results of simulation and field tests.

  • Hot test of a full-scale turbopump for a 30-ton-thrust liquid rocket engine was carried out. The turbopump is composed of an oxidizer pump, a fuel pump, and a turbine on a single shaft. Model fluid was used in the test, that is, hot air for the turbine and water for the pumps. The turbopump was operated stably at full speed for 120 seconds. In terms of performance characteristics of pumps and turbine, the results from the turbopump assembly test are compared with those from the turbopump component tests which were performed at about half of the design rotational speed.

  • More and more, spaces are decreasing which satisfy multiple requirements for wind power plants. However, areas which have excellent wind resources and are free to civil complaints occupy a large space, although they are exposed to the cryogenic environment. This study conducted a thermal-fluid analysis of a cryogenic chamber for testing large wind turbine parts exposed to the cryogenic environment. The position of supply air is placed to the upper area to compare each cooling performance for each location of various outlets in mixing ventilated conditions. The study carried out CFD analysis for the chamber both with and without a test object. For the cases without the test object, the air temperature of the upper supply and down extract type chamber was cooled faster by 5-100% than the others. However, for the cases with the test object, the object temperature of upper supply and center extract on the opposite side type chamber was cooled faster by 33-132% than the others. The cooling performance by the air inside the chamber and the test object did not show the same pattern, which implicates the need to consider the cooling performance by not only the air but also the test object in the large cryogenic chamber design for testing large parts.

  • The pneumatic muscle actuator consists of an air bellows tube with two end-flanges. The air bellows tube is made from rubber layers and flexible sheathing formed from nylon 6 fibers. This structure can be stretched or compressed to convert the radial expansive forces into contractile forces. We performed the finite element analysis and the performance test of pneumatic muscle actuator. Also, the pneumatic muscle actuator was manufactured and tested by home-made tester. The results of FEA was similar with performance test below the maximum error of 42 %.

  • Field tests of hybrid desiccant cooling systems were conducted from July to August 2011. Data were monitored and transferred in real time over the Internet. The monitored variableswere analyzed to determine the performance characteristics under outdoor conditions. A series of system simulations has been conducted for outdoor conditions of the field tests. The results agree well with the experimental data in general. The system performance has been shown to deteriorate for wetter conditions, as predicted by the simulation.

  • This paper presents performance comparison results of magneto-rheological (MR) brake in the sense of wear characteristics. To create wear circumstance, the brake is operated in 100 000 cycles by DC motor. To make wear test in same design parameters such as the radius of the housing, ferromagnetic disc and gap size, small sample of stainless are inserted in housing of MR brake. The performances of brake are compared between the initial stage (no wear) and 100 000 revolution cycles operated stage (wear). At each circumstance, torque of the brake is measured and compared by applying step current and sinusoidal control input. The controller used in this work is a simple, but effective PID controller. It is demonstrated that the wear behavior is more obvious as the operating cycle is increased in the torque control process.

  • TiCN based submicron cermet and similar ISO grad of the conventional cermets with TiCN of different particle size were produced by PM process, and their microstructure, mechanical properties and cutting performance were compared. The microstructure of submicron cermet was more homogeneous and showed much finer microstructure, resulting in better hardness and fracture toughness. The submicron cermet tools achieved excellent cutting performance such as wear resistance and toughness in comparison with two grades of the conventional cermets in millimg test. The relationship between microstrucure, mechanical properties and cutting performance of these cermet tools was discussed. The submicron cermet tools revealed for their potential to wide application range and interrupt cutting because of their superior wear resistance and toughness combinations.
