  • Globally, the need for remanufacturing or reusing ships and various mechanical parts continues to increase due to environmental problems including global warming. Research on remanufacturing is being carried out in many areas. However, research on inspection and classification to identify the performance or degree of wear of mechanical parts is insufficient. In particular, studies on the inspection-ability and classification-ability of mechanical parts equipped with various materials and complex forms are highly required. Remanufacturing must be considered from the stage of design to extend the life cycle of mechanical parts. Particularly, it is very important to perform research for evaluating the degree of ease to inspect and classify various sorts of wear or deterioration of parts caused by long-term use easily. In this study, the degree of ease in inspecting or classifying mechanical parts for remanufacturing is defined as inspection-ability and classification-ability. In fact, to remanufacture old parts, inspection-ability and classification-ability should be reflected from the stage of design. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the inspection-ability and classification-ability of ships and various mechanical parts. This researcher has presented the quantitative evaluation procedure of inspection-ability and classification-ability, derived the factors and ranges that influence each of the details of easiness, assigned scores according to the ranges of the factors, and calculated weights. Lastly, this study presents the procedure of scoring to evaluate the overall weights of inspection-ability and classification-ability and also inspection-ability and classification-ability quantitatively.

  • The thixoforming process become important for forming automobile parts. But, the thixoforming process cannot still prevent to forming defects such as pores and shrinkage which reduce mechanical properties of automobile parts. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the correlation between forming defects and mechanical properties. However, it is difficult to get data about relations between mechanical properties and forming defects in thixoformed aluminum alloy parts. In this study, three parts of aluminum thixoformed knuckle have been analyzed using tensile test and computer tomography(CT scan). Experimental results showed that the elongation properties of thixoformed aluminum parts were significantly dependent on size and number of forming defects.

  • An experimental study on material characterization and mechanical properties of SMC(Sheet Molding Compounds) compression method parts was carried out. Simple compression test using grease oil as a lubricant was carried out to characterize flow stress of SMC at elevated temperatures. Two different mold temperatures, $130^{\circ}C{\;}and{\;}150^{\circ}C$ and two different mold speeds, 15, 45 mm/min were used for preparing the specimen of SMC compression molded parts. Surface roughness, tensile, and 3-point bending tests were used to determine the effects of molding temperatures and speeds on mechanical properties of compression molded SMC parts. Orientation and distribution of glass fiber in the compression molded SMC parts were also investigated by photographing the burnt flat specimen and taking SEM(Scanning Electron Microscope) of cross-sectional T-specimen.

  • The rapid prototyping (RP) technology has been advanced for various applications such as verification of design, functional test. However, many RP machines still have low accuracy and limitation of applications for various materials. In this research, a hybrid RP system was developed to improve precision of micro parts. This hybrid system consists of deposition and material removal process by mechanical micro machining to fabricate nano composites using photo-curable polymer resin with various nano particles. In this work, using hybrid RP process with Multi-Walled Carbon Nano Tube (MWCNT) and hydroxyapatite, micro parts were fabricated. The precision of parts was evaluated based on the original CAD design, and to see the effect of nano particles on mechanical properties, tensile strength was measured. From the results of experiments, it was confirmed that the part made by hybrid process had higher precision, and the addition of nano particles improved mechanical properties.

  • Generally, in analysis of reliability of Design and Development Phase, reliability of electrical components is analyzed based on standards such as MIL-HDBK-217F, Bellcore Issue 4,5,6 by analyzing stress of architectural side (Power, Voltage, Current and quality level of components) of weapon system and stress of operational side (operational environment, operational temperature, Operational Profile). But the reliability of mechanical components is analyzed based on the data book of failure history of mechanical parts called NPRD-95(Nonelectronic Parts Reliability Data-95) without any analysis of above stress. However, even if it's the same mechanical parts, it might have different failure rate(fatigue, wear, corrosion) during operation depending on how weary(stress : pressure, vibration, temperature during operation) the parts are. Therefore, analyzing reliability using just data book can cause big difference in reliability instead of analyzing based upon stressfulness that parts might have, operational concept, and other various factors. Thus, This paper will guide the way of predicting reliability by organizing ways of predicting reliability for system organization and adopt ing NSWC-98/LE1(Naval Surface Warfare Center-98/LE1) for mechanical components.

  • The failure of a Kevlar29/Phenolic composite plate under high-velocity impact from an fragment simulation projectile was investigated using the nonlinear explicit finite element code, LS-DYNA. The composite laminate and the impactor were idealized by solid elements, and the interface between the laminas was modeled as a tiebreak type in LS-DYNA. The interaction between the impactor and laminate was simulated using a surface-to-surface eroding contact algorithm. When the stress level meets the given failure criteria, the layer in the element is eroded. Numerical results were verified through existing test results and showed good agreement.

  • Powder Forging technology is being developed rapidly because of its economic merits and the possibility of lightening parts by replacing steel parts with aluminum ones especially in automotive parts manufacturing. Recently Powder Forging process is widely used for manufacturing primary mechanical parts as a combined technology of P/M and precision hot forging. This paper describes the process conditions for the powder forging of Aluminium alloy piston. For example powder alloy design preform design by FEM simulation cold of compaction of specimens and preform sintering of preform powder forging process. The characteristics of sintered compaction of specimens and preform sintering of preform powder forging process. The characteristics of sintered products and final forged piston ones are investigated with tensile strength hardness ductility and so on. Eventually its results prove the improve mechanical properties of the piston produced by powder forging.

  • In this study, a genetic algorithm was utilized to optimize the stacking sequence of a composite plate subjected to a high velocity impact. The aim is to minimize the maximum backplane displacement of the plate. In the finite element model, we idealized the impactor using solid elements and modeled the composite plate by shell elements to reduce the analysis time. Various tests were carried out to investigate the effect of parameters in the genetic algorithm such as the type of variables, population size, number of discrete variables, and mutation probability.

  • In this paper, attempts have been made to extract elemental knowledges from contours of industrial mechanical elemental parts for efficient boundary representation ( chain coding) of their contours. These elemental knowledges could be used to know-ledge representation for representing boundaries of various industrial mechanical parts. Analysis is focused on elemental knowledges of line and circle boundaries, which compose basic elements of the contours of industrial mechanical parts.

  • Effect of high voltage screening was examined on mechanical strength of titania ceramics with two different surface roughness. Roughly finished sample showed degraded mechanical strength meaning that the introduced flaw played the role of starting point of mechanical fracture. On such sample, electrically weak parts were eliminated by applying a screening field. Mechanical strength measurement on survived parts revealed that after screening the Weibull plots bended to become a convex curve while plots at high strength region were almost the same. This result means that relatively low mechanical strength parts were eliminated by the electrical method. As a result the Weibull modulus calculated from all the data increased, demonstrating the effect of high voltage screening on titania ceramics containing fracture controlling surface flaws. Roles of the surface flaw such as a common weak spot for both failures are disscussed in relation to the electric field concentration similar to that of mechanical stress.
