  • Composite materials are widely used as structural materials for aerospace engineering because of its excellent mechanical properties such as light weight, high stiffness, and low thermal expansion. In driving, impact damage is one of the common but dangerous damages, caused by internal failure of the laminas interface which is not detected by in the surface. Many techniques to detect defects or delaminate between laminates have been reported. Shearography is a kind of laser speckle pattern interferometry with the advantages of non-destructive, non-contact, high resolution and displacement slope measurement. In this paper, the shearography is used to evaluate non-destructively impact damaged surface of the composite material and a measuring method using shearography for the thermal deformation of a impact damaged composite material is discussed. The basic principles of the technique are also described briefly.

  • The damage mechanism by the impact of steel ball on the soda-lime glass having a different surface roughness was investigated. An initiation and a propagation behavior of cracks formed by each impact velocity were quantitatively studied. A 4-point bending test was carried out to evaluate the remaining bending strength of a scratched soda-lime glass which impacted by the steel ball. As the surface roughness was increased, the shape of cracks became more irregular rather than those of the smooth specimens. The phenomenon of turning up in the wing of cone cracks occurred even at the lower velocity than the critical velocity caused the crushing. The threshold velocity of cracks initiation generally became lower than those of smooth specimen. An initiation and a propagation behavior of radial cracks had no relation with the direction of scratch on the surface. The remaning benidng strength of the scratched specimen according to impact velocity had no big difference compared with those of the smooth specimen.

  • An investigation was performed to study the matrix cracking and delamination in laminated composite plates due to transverse impact. A model was developed for predicting the initiation of the matrix cracking and the shape and size of impact-induced delamination in laminated composite plates resulting from the ballistic impact. The model consists of a stress analysis and a failure analysis. A transient finite element analysis which was based on the higher-order shear deformation theory was adopted for calculating the stresses inside the laminated composite plates during impact. A failure analysis was used to predict the initial intraply matrix cracking and the shape and size of the interface delamination in the laminates. As a results, a shear matrix cracking which was governed by the transverse interlaminar shear stress occured at the middle layer near the midplane of laminates and a bending matrix cracking which was governed by the transverse inplane stress occured at the bottom layer near the surface of laminates. In a thick laminates, a shear matrix cracking generated first at the middle layer of laminates, but in a thin laminates, a bending matrix cracking generated first at the bottom layer of laminates.

  • Carbon-fiber reinforced plastic(CFRP) laminates made of nano-particle-coated carbon fibers and damaged by a simulated lightning strike were tested under compression-after-impact(CAI) mode, during which the damage progress due to compressive loading has been monitored by acoustic emission(AE). The impact damage was induced not by mechanical loading but by a simulated lightning strike. Conductive nano-particles were coated directly on the fibers, from which CFRP coupons were made. The coupon were subjected to the strikes with a high voltage/current impulse of 10~40 kA within a few ${\mu}s$. The effects of nano-particle coating and the degree of damage induced by the simulated lightning strikes on AE activities were examined, and the relationship between the compressive residual strength and AE behavior has been evaluated in terms of AE event counts and the onset of AE activity with the compressive loading. The degree of impact damage was also measured in terms of damage area by using ultrasonic C-scan images. The assessment during the CAI tests of damaged CFRP showed that AE monitoring appeared to be useful to differentiate the degree of damage hence the mechanical integrity of composite structures damaged by lightning strikes.

  • In the present article, recent progress of spray-wall interaction research has been reviewed. Studies on the spray-wall interaction phenomena can be categorized mainly into three groups: experiments on single drop impact and spray (multiple-drop) impingement, and development of comprehensive models. The criteria of wall-impingement regimes (i.e., stick, rebound, spread, splash, boiling induced breakup, breakup, and rebound with breakup) and the post-impingement characteristics (mostly for splash and rebound) are the main subjects of the single-drop impingement studies. Experimental studies on spray-wall impingement phenomena cover examination of the outline shape and internal structure of a spray after the wall impact. Various prediction models for the spray-wall impingement phenomena have been developed based on the experiments on the single drop impact and the spray impingement. In the present article, details on the wall-impingement criteria and post-impingement characteristics of single drops, external and internal structures of the spray after the wall impact, and their prediction models are reviewed.

  • In this study, we fabricated the superhydrophobic and super-water-repellent surface with the micro/nano scale structures using simple conventional silicon wet-etching technique and the black silicon method by deep reactive ion etching. These fabrication methods are simple but very effective. Also we reported the droplet impact experimental results on the micro/nano-scaled surface. There are two representative impact behaviors as "rebound" and "fragmentation". We found the transition Weber number between "rebound" and "fragmentation" statements, experimentally. Additionally, we concerned about the dimensionless spreading diameters for our super-water-repellent surface. The novel characterization method was introduced for analysis including the "fragmentation" region. As a result, our super-water-repellent surface with the micro/nano-scaled structures shows the different impact behaviors compared with a reference smooth surface, by some meaningful experiments.

  • In this paper, a new method is suggested to analyze impulsive stresses at loading poing of concentrated impact load under certain impact conditions determined by impact velocity, stiffness of plate and mass of impact body, etc. The impulsive stresses are analyzed by using the three dimensional dynamic theory of elasticity so as to analytically clarify the generation phenomenon of cone crack at the impact fracture of fragile materials (to be discussed if the second paper). The Lagrange's plate theory and Hertz's law of contact theory are used for the analysis of impact load, and the approximate equation of impact load is suggested to analyze the impulsive stresses at the impact point to decide the ranage of impact load factor. When impact load factors are over and under 0.263, approximate equations are suggested to be F(t)=Aexp(-Bt)sinCt and F(t)=Aexp(-bt) {1-exp(Ct)} respectively. Also, the inverse Laplace transformation is done by using the F.F.T.(fast fourier transform) algorithm. And in order to clarity the validity of stress analysis method, experiments on strain fluctuation at impact point are performed on a supported square glass plate. Finally, these analytical results are shown to be in close agreement with experimental results.

  • A quantitative study of impact damage of ${Al_2}}O_3}-TiO_2$ plasma coated soda-lime glasses was carried out and compared with that of the uncoated smooth glass specimen. The shape of cracks by the impact of steel ball was observed by stereo-microscope and the decrease of the bending strength due to the impact of steel ball was measured through the 4-point bending test. At the low velocity, cone cracks were occurred. As the impact velocity increases, initial lateral cracks were propagated on the slanting surface of a cone crack, and radial cracks were generated at the crushed site. When the impact velocity of steel ball exceeds the critical velocity, the contact site of specimen was crushed due to plastic deformation and then radial and lateral cracks were largely grown. Crack length of coated specimens was smaller than that of uncoated smooth specimen due to the effect of coating layer on the substrate surface. According to impact velocity, the bending strength of coated specimens had no significant difference, compared with that of the uncoated smooth specimen. But this represents that the bending strength of coated specimens was increased, considering the effect of sand blasting damage which was performed to increase the adhesion force of coating layer.

  • In this study, the axial collapse tests were performed under either static (or quasi-static) or impact loads with several collapse velocities based on the expectation that para-closed sections of the front-end side members (spot welded hat and double hat shaped section members) would show quite different collapse characteristics from those for seamless section. The test results showed that both of the hat and double hat shaped section members failed in the stable sequential collapse mode in the static or quasi-static collapse tests, while the double hat shaped section members underwent the unstable collapse mode especially when the impact velocity is high. The mean collapse loads in the hat shaped section members increase with collapse velocity for all the cases of the static, quasi-static, and impact collapse tests. In the double hat shaped section members, however, the mean collapse loads decrease with increase in collapse velocity in the impact tests.
