  • The losses at off-design points from a compressor cascade occur due to the deviation from a design incidence angle at the inlet of the cascade. The self-noise from the blade cascade at off-design points comes from a separated boundary layer and vortex sheddings. If the incidence angle to the cascade increases, stalling in blades may occur and the noise level increases significantly. This study applied Large-Eddy Simulations (LES) using deductive and deductive dynamic SGS models to low Mach-number, turbulent flow with each incidence angle to the cascade ranging from -40$^{\circ}$ to +20$^{\circ}$ and compared numerical predictions with measured data. It was observed that the oscillating separation bubbles attached to the suction surface do not modify wake flows dynamically for cases of negative incidence angles. However, an incidence angle greater than 8$^{\circ}$ caused a separated vortex near the leading edge to be shed downstream and created stalling. The computed performance parameters such as drag coefficient and total pressure loss coefficient showed good agreement with experimental results. Noise from the cascade of the compressor is summarized as sound generated by a structure interacting with unsteady, turbulent flows. The hybrid method using acoustic analogy was observed to closely predict the measured overall sound powers and directivity patterns at design and off-design points of blade cascade.

  • A numerical study was conducted to show the effect of aspect ratio on the analogy of the developing laminar flows between in orthogonally rotating straight duct and in a stationary curved duct of rectangular cross-section. In order. to clarify the similarity of two nows, dimensionless parameters (equation omitted) and Rossby Ro= $w_{m}$$\Omega$ $d_{h}$, in a rotating straight duct were used as a set corresponding to Dean number, (equation omitted), and curvature ratio, λ=R/ $d_{h}$, in a stationary curved duct. Four. different aspect ratios A=0.25, 0.5, 2 and 4 were considered. Under the condition that the magnitudes of Ro and λ were large enough to satisfy the 'asymptotic invariance property' and the aspect ratio was larger than 1, there were strong quantitative similarities between the two flows such as flow patterns, friction factors, and maximum axial velocity magnitudes fur the same values of $K_{LR}$ and $K_{LC}$ . On the other hand, as the aspect ratio decreased below 1 (A=0.25 and 0.5), the difference of the secondary flow intensity between these two flows was enhanced and therefore the analogy of two flows was not so evident as that of the larger aspect ratio (A=2 and 4). 4).nd 4).

  • Natural convection heat transfer phenomena on a horizontal cylinder have been studied experimentally in order to investigate the applicability of analogy experimental methodology using a copper electroplating system and to visualize the local heat transfer rates depending on the angular position and the diameter of the horizontal cylinder. In the copper electroplating system, the copper ion produced at the anode moves by convection and diffusion to the cathode and reduces at the cathode, representing the heat transfer. By using aluminum cathode with a distinguishable color, the amount of copper plated could visualize the amount of heat transferred depending on the angular position of the cylinder. The diameter of the cylinder is varied from 0.01m to 0.15m, which correspond to Rayleigh numbers in the range of $1.73{\times}10^7$ to $5.69{\times}10^{11}$. The test results are in good agreement with existing heat transfer correlations.

  • A numerical simulation is carried out on flows in a rotating serpentine flow passage, which models a cooling passage in a gas turbine blade, by using a 3-D FVM based TURBO-D program. When it is rotating, the flow field exhibits quite different aspects due to the effect of the Coriolis force. Especially the secondary flow field appearing in the cross-sectional area is very complex because of the combined effect of the Coriolis force and the centrifugal force in the curved area. Local Nusselt numbers are also obtained based on the Reynolds analogy and compared with the published experimental data showing a good agreement. The results of the present study can be applied to the design of cooling passages of a gas turbine blade.

  • Natural convection heat transfer rates in a vertical pipe were measured for $Gr_H$ number from 2.1x$10^6$ to 1.2x$10^9$. Using the analogy concept, heat transfer experiments were replaced by mass transfer experiments. A cupric acid - copper sulfate ($H_2SO_4-CuSO_4$) electroplating system was adopted as the mass transfer system and the mass transfer rates were measured. Comparison of the results with the existing laminar and turbulent natural convection heat transfer correlations on a vertical plate showed very good agreements except for the high $Gr_H$ case, where the boundary layer inside the vertical pipe interferes. The agreements showed the usefulness of the analogy experiment method. Using 3 different anode size and 6 different geometrical configurations, the effects of the anode size and position were explored. As expected, the anode size and position do not affect the limiting currents for most cases. These results will be used as the experimental background for the positioning and sizing of the anodes for a more complex experiment.

  • Experiments on laminar mixed convection in a vertical pipe were performed for the Re range 1,000-3,000, the $Gr_H$ range $10^5-10^8$, the Pr range 2,000-7,000, and aspect ratio range 1-7. Using the analogy concept, heat transfer systems were simulated by mass transfer systems. A cupric acid.copper sulfate electroplating system was adopted as the mass transfer system, and the mass transfer rates were measured. The measured Nu values were far greater than those previously reported because of the large value of pr in this experiment. As the aspect ratio in this study was not sufficiently large for the flow to be fully developed, the test results were similar to those for mixed convection on a vertical plate rather than that inside a long vertical pipe. It was concluded that the behavior of laminar mixed convection of a developing flow in a vertical pipe at a low aspect ratio and low $Gr_H$ is similar to that of laminar mixed convection in the vertical plate. As the aspect ratio and $Gr_H$ increase, the laminar mixed convection phenomena becomes similar to that observed in a fully developed flow in the vertical pipe.

  • Vortex generators are fabricated on the fin surface of a fin-tube heat exchanger to augment the convective heat transfer. In addition to horseshoe vortices formed naturally around the tube of the fin-tube heat exchanger, longitudinal vortices are artificially created on the fin surface by vortex generators. The purpose of this study is to investigate the local heat transfer phenomena in the fin-tube heat exchangers with and without vortex generators, and to evaluate the effect of vortices on the heat transfer enhancement. Naphthalene sublimation technique is employed to measure local mass transfer coefficients, then analogy equation between heat and mass transfer is used to calculate heat transfer coefficients. Experiments are performed for the model of fin -circular tube heat exchangers with and without vortex generators, and of fin-flat tube heat exchangers with and without vortex generators. Average heat transfer coefficients of finn-flat tube heat exchanger without vertex generator are much lower than those of fin-circular tube heat exchanger. On the other hand, fin-flat tube heat exchanger with vortex generators has much higher heat transfer value than conventional fin-circular tube heat exchanger At the same time, pressure losses for four types of heat exchanger is measured and compared.

  • This article discusses a diagnostics method based on models, and information theory. From an extensive system dynamics bond graph model of a gearbox [1], simulated were various cases germane to this diagnostics approach, including the response of an ideal gearbox, which functions perfectly to designer's specifications, and degraded gearboxes with tooth root cracking. By comparing these cases and constructing a signal flow analogy between the gearbox and a communication channel, Shannon' s information theory [2], including theorems, was applied to the gearbox to assess system health, in terms of ability to function.

  • Human beings usually absorb a shock from terrain during walking through the damping effects of joints, muscles and skin. With this analogy, a robot-leg with a shock absorber is built to absorb the impact forces at its foot during high-speed walking on irregular terrain. To control the hip position while walking, the dynamic controller suitable for high speed walking is designed and implemented based on a dynamic model by Kane's equation. The hip position tracking performances of various controllers (PID controller, computed torque controller and feedforward torque controller) are compared through the experiments of the real robot-leg.

  • This paper presents a new type of jetting dispenser for the integrated circuit (IC) fabrication and surface mount technology The proposed system is featured by the piezoelectric actuator and hydraulic magnification device. After describing structural component of the dispensing mechanism and its operation principle, both the fluid modeling and the hydraulic magnification modeling are undertaken with a lumped-parameter method based on the analogy of the fluid system and mechanical system. A mathematical governing equation is then derived by integrating the fluid model with the mechanical model of the driving piston and piezoelectric actuator. Subsequently, in order to achieve a desired dispensing amount, control algorithm adjusting duty cycle of the driving voltage is synthesized and control responses are presented in time domain.
