The objective of this paper is to predict pitting initiation by using a contact analysis and subsurface stress. Contact stresses are obtained by contact analysis of a semi-infinite solid based on the use of influence functions. Subsurface stress field is obtained using rectangular patch solutions. It is used Mesoscopic multiaxial fatigue criterion to predict contact fatigue life. It is important to predict pitting initiation to enhance reliability of the mechanical elements. Pitting life prediction in the spur gears which are fundamental mechanical element is presented in this paper.

This paper proposes a derating design method for improving system reliability by using a probabilistic approach. In the proposed design, the focus is upon system levels in determining derated levels of stresses such as temperature and current, unlike recent design approaches that focus on component levels. System reliability is evaluated using component reliability metrics that are given as functions of time and unknown stresses; this evaluation is based on a series system-reliability model. The variation in stress, which was not considered in previous derating designs, is introduced in the present design to account for the uncertainty in both environmental and operating conditions at the customer' hands. Optimization problems for system reliability improvement are formulated and solved using FORM to determine the best derating design. An example of a derating design for an electrical system shows the details of the proposed method and its applicability to systems design for reliability improvement.

Since a device such as a rocket motor requires very high reliability, a reasonable reliability design process is essential. However, Korea has implemented a design method for applying a safety factor to each component. In classic reliability analysis, input variables such as mean and standard deviation, used in the limit state function, are treated as deterministic values. Because the mean and standard deviation are determined by a small amount of data, this approach could lead to inaccurate results. In this study, reliability analysis is performed for bolted joints and o-ring seals, and the Bayesian approach is used to statistically estimate the input variables. The estimated variables and failure probability, calculated by the reliability analysis, are derived in the form of probability distributions.

By using the failure information and the cumulative test execution time obtained by performing the reliability growth test, it is possible to estimate the parameter of the reliability growth model, and the Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) of the product can be predicted through the parameter estimation. However the failure information could be acquired periodically or the number of sample data of the obtained failure information could be small. Because there are various constraints such as the cost and time of test or the characteristics of the product. This may cause the error of the parameter estimation of the reliability growth model to increase. In this study, the Bayesian method is applied to estimating the parameters of the reliability growth model when the number of sample data for the fault information is small. Simulation results show that the estimation accuracy of Bayesian method is more accurate than that of Maximum Likelihood Estimation (MLE) respectively in estimation the parameters of the reliability growth model.

In this study, the characteristics and error ranges of the mechanical bonding strength were analyzed according to before and after thermal shock test for various chips of automotive application component using Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu solder. In the after thermal shock test, the mechanical bonding strengths tend to decrease, meanwhile decreasing rates of mechanical strengths were less then 12% at specimen's bonding area below 3.5$mm^2$, and were from 17 to 21% at specimen's bonding area above 12 $mm^2$. On the other hand, Specimen's mean deviation rates were about 5% at specimen's bonding area more than 12 $mm^2$. Inversely, at specimen's bonding area is less then 3.5 $mm^2$, mean deviation rates were increased to about 8%. It means that the smaller device size is, the larger mean deviation rate. In addition, error ranges and deviation rates of the mechanical bonding strengths may differ slightly depending on their bonding area. Furthermore, process conditions as well as method of mechanical reliability evaluation should be established to reduce the error ranges of bonding strength.
In this study we investigate the reliability of a bar subjected to a random tensile load in presence of corrosion. We consider linear, quadratic and exponential models that connect the stress in the bar with the corrosion rate. Two probability densities are considered for the load, with attendant derivation of the time-dependant reliability. The design time of operation is determined utilizing the requirement that the reliability must not be less than the required value.
A semi-stochastic process model of reliability was established for hyperbolic cooling towers subjected to combined loadings of wind force, self-weight, temperature loading. Effect of the soil-structure interaction on reliability was evaluated. By involving the gust factor, an equivalent static scheme was employed to convert the dynamic model to static model. The TR combination rule was used to consider relations between load responses. An analysis example was made on the 90M cooling tower of Maoming, Guangdong of China. Numerical results show that the design not including interaction turns to be conservative.
Mechanical components and structures are a major part of complex systems and the conseguences of their failure can be extremely costly. The ultimate goal of design engineers is to optimize these mechanical and structural design from the point of view of cost, reliability, weight, volume, maintainability and safety. An essential requirement of design optimization is to develop mathematical models for reliability at design stage. This paper is to minimize the cost of resources subject to the constraint that the reliability of the system must meet a specified level. The lagrange multiplier method is used to optimize the lognormal stress-lognormal strength problem. This optimization problem can be reduced to a search problem in one variable. A numerical example is presented to illustrate the optimization problem.

Plastic and creep deformations of solder joints during thermal cycling are the main factors of misalignments and power losses in optical telecommunication components. Furthermore, the increased mismatch between solder Joint-bonded areas may cause severe failure in the components. Darveaux's creep model was implemented into a finite element program (ABAQUS) to simulate creep response of solder. Based on the finite element results, thermal fatigue reliability was predicted by using various fatigue life prediction models. Also, the effects of ramp conditions, dwelling time, and solder joint-embedding materials on the reliability were investigated under the thermal cycling conditions of the Telcordia schedule (-40∼75$^{\circ}C$).

The gear in various mechanical components easily occurs at damages by the external torque. The main failure modes of the gear are surface pitting with the tooth surface and breakage with tooth root by caused fatigue. Therefore, the gear is very important role in the reliability research since it may cause fatal damage of entire system such as the gear box in automobile transmission. In this study, the failure mode of the gear was analyzed and accelerated durability analysis was employed for the life estimation of spur gears. In the case of assumed load spectrums, the reliability of spur gears was evaluated by inverse power law-Weibull accelerated life test model with cumulative damage exposure.
