  • In relation to the tissue engineering, the cellular responses to the morphology of the scaffold surface are interesting topics. Human ligament fibroblasts (HLFs) were cultured on the micrpatterned silicone substrates subjected to cyclic stretch to simulate ligament motion. Groove and ridge width of silicone substrates was 10/50, 20/50, 20/10, and 20/20 ${\mu}m$ (groove/ridge ${\mu}m$) with a depth of $3{\mu}m$. Strain was applied over two days for 4 hours per day with a frequency of 0.5 Hz with the magnitudes of 4 or 8%. The purpose of this study was to evaluate ligament fibroblast alignment and cellular responses in relation to the pattern of microgrooved surface and stretching magnitude. Ligament fibroblasts in the microgrooved surface were elongated and aligned parallel to the microgrooves under no stretch. Uniaxial cyclic stretch induced cellular activities and their orientation rise in cellular response and the cells showed alignment and elongation perpendicular to the direction of the stretch. Biochemical analyses showed that the best cellular response was found on the $20/50{\mu}m$ under 8% stretch. The surface morphology and mechanical stretching were found to contribute to increase of proliferation, collagen production.

  • In the display industry, COG bonding method is being applied to production of LCD panels that are used for mobile phones and monitors, and is one of the mounting methods optimized to compete with the trend of ultra small, ultra thin and low cost of display. In COG bonding process, electrical characteristics such as contact resistance, insulation property, etc and mechanical characteristics such as bonding strength, etc depend on properties of conductive particles and epoxy resin along with ACF materials used for COG by manufacturers. As the properties of such materials have close relation to optimization of bonding conditions such as temperature, pressure, time, etc in COG bonding process, it is requested to carry out an in-depth study on characteristics of COG bonding, based on which development of bonding process equipment shall be processed. In this study were analyzed the characteristics of COG bonding process, performed the analysis and reliability evaluation on electrical and mechanical characteristics of COG bonding using ACF to find optimum bonding conditions for ACF, and performed the experiment on bonding characteristics regarding fine pitch to understand the affection on finer pitch in COG bonding. It was found that it is difficult to find optimum conditions because it is more difficult to perform alignment as the pitch becomes finer, but only if alignment has been made, it becomes similar to optimum conditions in general COG bonding regardless of pitch intervals.

  • Since human is vulnerable to emotional, physical and environmental distractions, most human inspectors cannot sustain a consistent 8-hour inspection in a day specifically for small components like door locking levers. As an alternative for human inspection, presented in this study is the development of a machine vision inspection system (MVIS) purposely for door locking levers. Comprises the development is the structure of the MVIS components, designed to meet the demands, features and specifications of door locking lever manufacturing companies in increasing their production throughput upon keeping the quality assured. This computer-based MVIS is designed to perform quality measures of detecting missing portions and defects like burr on every door locking lever. NI Vision Builder software for Automatic Inspection (AI) is found to be the optimum solution in configuring the needed quality measures. The proposed software has measurement techniques such as edge detecting and pattern-matching which are capable of gauging, detecting missing portion and checking alignment. Furthermore, this study exemplifies the incorporation of the optimized NI Builder inspection environment to the pre-inspection and post-inspection subsystems.

  • The dispersion of carbon nanofiber (CNF) was carried out by solution blending, mechanical mixing, and sonication. CNFs at levels of 5-50% fiber weight content were mixed with polypropylene (PP) powder, and then were melt-mixed using a twin-screw extruder. For the further alignment of fibers, extruded rods were stacked uni-directionally in the mold cavity for the compression molding. For the evaluation of mechanical properties of nanocomposites, tension, in-plane shear, and flexural tests were conducted. CNF/PP composites clearly showed reinforcing effect in the longitudinal direction. The tensile modulus and strength have improved by 100% and 40%, respectively for 50 % fiber weight content, and the flexural modulus and strength have increased by 120% and 25%, respectively for the same fiber weight content. The shear modulus showed 65% increase, but the strength dropped sharply by 40%. However, the property enhancement was not significant due to the poor adhesion between fiber and matrix. In the transverse direction, the tensile, flexural, and shear strength decreased as more fibers were added.

  • The aim of this study is an investigation of the interaction of two micro hole defects affecting fatigue crack initation life and propagation behavior. The locatio of two micro hole defects was considered as an angle of alignment and the distance between the centers of two micro hole defects. The fatigue cracking behavior is experimented under bending. When micro defects are located close to each other, the fatigue crack initiation lives are varied with their relative locations. In the experiments, the area of local plastic strain strongly played a role in the fatigue crack initiation lives. Therefore we introduce a parameter which contains the plastic deformation area at stress concentrations and propose a fatigue crack initiation life prediction curve. In addition, the directions and propagation rates of fatigue cracks initiated at two micro hole defects are studied experimentally.

  • Performance of refrigerant oil at the thrust-bearing and at the journal-bearing of a scroll compressor is a significant factor. This paper presents the friction and anti-wear characteristics of nano oil with a mixture of a refrigerant oil and carbon nano particles. The characteristics of friction and anti-wear using nano-oil is evaluated using the disk on disk tester for measuring friction surface temperature and the coefficient of friction. The average friction coefficient of nano-oil was reduced by 60% compared to raw oil under 600 N and 1,000 rpm. It is believed that the interaction of nano particles between surfaces can be improved the lubrication in the friction surfaces. Worn surfaces of frictional specimen were also investigated by the optical and atomic force microscopy. Conclusively, it is expected that wear and friction coefficient of compressor can be reduced by alignment applying nano-oil as refrigerant oil.

  • The mechanical behavior of small-sized materials has been investigated for many industrial applications, including MEMS and semiconductors. It is challenging to obtain accurate mechanical properties measurements for thin films due to several technical difficulties, including measurement of strain, specimen alignment, and fabrication. In this work, we used the micro-tensile testing unit with the real-time DIC (Digital Image Correlation) strain measurement system. This system has advantages of real time strain monitoring up to 50 nm resolution during the micro-tensile test, and ability to measure the young's modulus and Poisson's ratio at the same time. The mechanical properties of SCS (Single Crystal Silicon) are measured by uniaxial tension test from freestanding SCS which are $2.5{\mu}m$ thick, $200-500{\mu}m$ wide specimens on the (100) plane. Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio and tensile strength in the <110> direction are measured by micro-tensile testing system.

  • This paper proposes optimal control techniques for determining translational and rotational maneuvers that facilitate proximity operations and docking. Two candidate controllers that provide translational motion are compared. A state-dependent Riccati equation controller is formulated from nonlinear relative motion dynamics, and a linear quadratic tracking controller is formulated from linearized relative motion. A linear quadratic Gaussian controller using star trackers to provide quaternion measurements is designed for precision attitude maneuvering. The attitude maneuvers are evaluated for different final axis alignment geometries that depend on the approach distance. A six degrees-of-freedom simulation demonstrates that the controllers successfully perform proximity operations that meet the conditions for docking.

  • The objective of our study is to investigate the micro fabric ability by conventional metal forming processes. In the present investigation, micro hole punching was studied. We tried to control punching process at the micro level and scaled down the standard blanking condition for $25{\mu}m$ hole fabrication. To accommodate this, tungsten carbide tooling sets and micro punching press were carefully designed and assembled meeting accuracy requirements for $25{\mu}m$ hole punching. With our developments, 100, 50, and $25{\mu}m$ holes were successfully made on metal foils such as brass and stainless steel of 100, 50, and $25{\mu}m$ in thickness, respectively, and hole sizes and shapes were measured and analyzed to investigate fabrication accuracy. Shear behavior during micro punching was also discussed. Our study showed that the conventional punching process could produce high quality holes down to $25{\mu}m$.

  • Fizeau interferometer is well known optical instrument for measuring the lens profile accurately. The object of this study is focused on the design and optical measuring techniques for large optical components, such as a reflection mirror for astronomical purpose. Measuring of large optical lens, the object could not be moved as small one but the measuring instrument must be moved for the alignment, because of the geometric conditions and the accuracy of the stage. Therefore, a five axis stage is designed to align the Interferometer instead of the measuring object. This instrument will be used for an on machine measuring system in polishing machine for large optical lens.
