  • Thus far, several in vivo biosensing platforms have been proposed to measure the mechanical contractility of cultured cardiomyocytes. However, the low sensitivity and screening rate of the developed sensors severely limit their practical applications. In addition, intensive research and development in cardiovascular disease demand a high-throughput drug-screening platform based on biomimetic engineering. To overcome the drawbacks of the current state-of-the-art methods, we propose a high-throughput drug-screening platform based on 16 functional high-sensitivity well plates. The proposed system simulates the physiological accuracy of the heart function in an in vitro environment. We fabricated 64 cantilevers using highly flexible and optically transparent silicone rubber and placed in 16 independent wells. Nanogrooves were imprinted on the surface of the cantilever to promote cell alignment and maturation. The adverse effects of the cardiovascular drugs on the cultured cardiomyocytes were systematically investigated. The 64 cantilevers demonstrated a highly reliable and reproducible mechanical contractility of the drug-treated cardiomyocytes. Real-time high-throughput screening and simultaneous evaluation of the cardiomyocyte mechanical contractility under multiple drugs verified that the proposed system could be used as an efficient drugtoxicity test platform.

  • To study the effects of graphite shape and the composite fabricating method on the mechanical properties of graphite/copper (Gr/Cu) composites, a copper composite using graphite flakes or graphite granules as reinforcing phases is fabricated using mechanical mixing or electroless plating method. The mechanical properties of the Gr/Cu composites are evaluated by compression tests, and the compressive strength and elongation of the Gr/Cu composites using graphite granules as a reinforcing phase are compared with those of Cu composites with graphite flakes as a reinforcing phase. The compressive yield strength or maximum strength of the Gr/Cu composites with graphite granules as a reinforcing phase is higher than that of the composites using graphite flakes as a reinforcing phase regardless of the alignment of graphite. The strength of the composite produced by the electroless plating method is higher than that of the composite material produced by the conventional mechanical mixing method regardless of the shape of the graphite. Using graphite granules as a reinforcing phase instead of graphite flakes improves the strength and elongation of the Gr/Cu composites in all directions, and reduces the difference in strength or elongation according to the direction.

  • In this study, we present a method for correcting unbalanced sitting posture alignment to its optimal position, by designing a chair equipped with pressure sensor. With increasement in sedentary work, such as office work or study, people are now spending more time in chair. To accommodate sedentary life styles, many chairs are being designed for a comfortable sitting condition. However, without awareness and efforts for correct sitting posture, it may not be possible to achieve such condition. When the weight is not distributed evenly while sitting, it may cause various diseases such as scoliosis and a herniated disc. Being inspired by such facts, we have progressed basic researches to maintain the correct sitting posture. To demonstrate the proof-of-concept validation, we installed a series of sensors to a chair and then measured the changes in pressure distribution in various postures. The results show that this approach can be potentially helpful for understanding how fundamental problems due to unbalanced sitting posture can be corrected and maintained properly.

  • Objective: We evaluated the effects of tooth displacement on frictional force when conventional ligating lingual brackets (CL-LBs), CL-LBs with a narrow bracket width, and self-ligating lingual brackets (SL-LBs) were used with initial leveling and alignment wires. Methods: CL-LBs (7th Generation), CL-LBs with a narrow bracket width (STb), and SL-LBs (In-Ovation L) were tested under three tooth displacement conditions: no displacement (control); a 2-mm palatal displacement (PD) of the maxillary right lateral incisor (MXLI); and a 2-mm gingival displacement (GD) of the maxillary right canine (MXC) (nine groups, n = 7 per group). A stereolithographic typodont system and artificial saliva were used. Static and kinetic frictional forces (SFF and KFF, respectively) were measured while drawing a 0.013-inch copper-nickel-titanium archwire through brackets at 0.5 mm/min for 5 minutes at $36.5^{\circ}C$. Results: The In-Ovation L exhibited lower SFF under control conditions and lower KFF under all displacement conditions than the 7th Generation and STb (all p < 0.001). No significant difference in SFF existed between the In-Ovation L and STb for a 2-mm GD of the MXC and 2-mm PD of the MXLI. A 2-mm GD of the MXC produced higher SFF and KFF than a 2-mm PD of the MXLI in all brackets (all p < 0.001). Conclusions: CL-LBs with narrow bracket widths exhibited higher KFF than SL-LBs under tooth displacement conditions. CL-LBs and ligation methods should be developed to produce SFF and KFF as low as those in SL-LBs during the initial and leveling stage.

  • Multi-walled carbon nanotubes were purified by using the nitric acid after the mechanical cutting, which carboxylic group might be introduced into the surface of nanotubes. To enhance the dispersion of CNTs, carboxylic groups were substituted in the reaction with octadecyl amine containing a long alkyl group. Nanofibers were manufactured by electrospinning, the solution that mixed with PMMA and ODA-fuctionalized CNTs in dimethyl formamide and dispersed with ultrasonication. Diameter and alignment of nanofibers with various electrospinning parameters, such as the CNT and PMMA concentration in solution, the applied voltage, and the distance to the collector were investigated. As a result, the nanofiber diameter was increased with the increment of PMMA concentration, whereas it was reduced as the applied voltage and the spinning distance was increased. The spinning area became smaller with the distance. The nanofibers were formed without the defect on surface and well aligned in a specific concentration of PMMA and nanotubes.

  • The Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) and the Department of Astronomy at the University of Texas at Austin (UT) are developing a near infrared wide-band high resolution spectrograph, IGRINS (Immersion Grating Infrared Spectrograph). The white-pupil design of the instrument optics uses 7 cryogenic mirrors including 3 aspherical off-axis collimators and 4 flat fold mirrors. Two of the 3 collimators are H- and K-band pupil transfer mirrors and they are designed as compensators for the system alignment in each channel. Therefore, their mount design will be one of the most sensitive parts in the IGRINS optomechanical system. The design work will include the computer-aided 3D modeling and finite element analysis (FEA) to optimize the structural stability of the mount models. The mount body will also include a tip-tilt and translation adjustment mechanism to be used as the alignment compensators.

  • Polyimides (PIs) exhibit excellent thermal stability, mechanical, dielectric, and chemical resistance properties due to their heterocyclic imide rings and aromatic rings on the backbone. Due to these advantageous properties, PIs have found diverse applications in industry. Most PIs are insoluble because of the nature of the high chemical resistance. Thus, they are generally used as a soluble precursor polymer, which forms complexes with solvent molecules, and then finally converts to the corresponding polyimides via imidization reaction. This complexation with solvent has caused severe difficulty in the characterization of the precursor polymers. However, significant progress has recently been made on the detailed characterization of PI precursors and their imidization reaction. On the other hand, much research effort has been exerted to reduce the dielectric constant of PIs, as demanded in the microelectronics industry, through chemical modifications, as well as to develop high performance, light-emitting PIs and liquid crystal (LC) alignment layer PIs with both rubbing and rubbing-free processibility, which are desired in the flat-panel display industry. This article reviews this recent research progresses in characterizing PIs and their precursors and in developing low dielectric constant, light-emitting, and LC alignment layer PIs.

  • The moisture absorption behavior of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) and its effect on dimensional stability were examined. Moisture diffusivity in CFRP was determined by measuring a specimen's weight during the moisture absorption test. Three types of CFRP specimens were prepared: a unidirectionally reinforced laminate, a quasi-isotropic laminate and woven fabric. Each CFRP was processed into two geometries - a thin plate for determination of diffusivity and a rod with a square cross-section for the discussion of two-dimensional diffusion behavior. By solving Fick's law expanded to 3 dimensions, the diffusivities in the three orthogonal directions were obtained and analyzed in terms of the anisotropy of CFRP moisture diffusion. Coefficients of moisture expansion (CMEs) were also obtained from specimen deformation caused by moisture absorption. During moisture absorption, the specimen surfaces showed larger deformation near the edges due to the distribution of moisture contents. This deformation was reasonably predicted by the finite element analysis using experimentally determined diffusivities and CMEs. For unidirectional CFRP, the effect of the fiber alignment on CME was analyzed by micromechanical finite element analysis (FEA) and discussed.

  • This paper discusses a gravity compensation technique designed to reduce wavefront error caused by gravity during the assembly and alignment of satellite multi-band optical sensor. For this study, the wavefront error caused by gravity was analyzed for the opto-mechanical structure of multi-band optical sensor. Wavefront error, an indicator of optical performance, was computed by using the displacements of optics calculated through structural analysis and optical sensitivity calculated through optical analysis. Since the calculated wavefront error caused by gravity exceeded the allocated budget, the gravity compensation technique was required. This compensation technique reduces wavefront error effectively by applying the compensation load to the appropriate position of the housing tube. This method successfully meets the wavefront error budget for all bands. In the future, a gravity compensation equipment applying this technique will be manufactured and used for assembly and alignment of multi-band optical sensor.
