Heat insulation plates of fumed silica were prepared by mixing fumed silica, SiC powder and chopped glass fiber by a high speed mixer followed by pressing of the mixture powder in a stainless steel mold of $100{\times}100mm$. Composition of the plates, particle size of SiC, and type of inorganic binder were varied for observation of their contribution to heat insulation of the plate. The plate was installed on the upper portion of an electric furnace the inside temperature of which was maintained at $400^{\circ}C$ and $600^{\circ}C$, for investigation of heat transfer through the plate from inside of the electric furnace to outside atmosphere. Surface temperatures were measured in real time using a thermographic camera. The particle size of SiC was varied in the range of $1.3{\sim}17.5{\mu}m$ and the insulation was found to be most excellent when SiC of $2.2{\mu}m$ was incorporated. When the size of SiC was smaller or larger than $2.2{\mu}m$, the heat insulation effect was decreased. Inorganic binders of alkali silicate and phosphate were tested and the phosphate was found to maintain the heat insulation property while increasing mechanical properties.
NiTi alloy is widely used innumerous biomedical applications (orthodontics, cardiovascular, orthopaedics, etc.) for its distinctive thermomechanical and mechanical properties such as shape memory effect, super elasticity, low elastic modulus and high damping capacity. However, NiTi alloy is still a controversial biomaterial because of its high Ni content which can trigger the risk of allergy and adverse reactions when Ni ion releases into the human body. In order to improve the corrosion resistance of the TiNi alloy and suppress the release of Ni ions, many surface modification techniques have been employed in previous literature such as thermal oxidation, laser surface treatment, sol-gel method, anodic oxidation and electrochemical methods. In this paper, the NiTi was electrochemically etched in various electrolytes to modify surface. The microstructure, element distribution, phase composition and roughness of the surface were investigatedby scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry(EDS), X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Systematic controlling of nano and submicron surface features was achieved by altered density of hydro fluidic acid in etchant solution. Nanoscale surface topography, such as, pore density, pore width, pore height, surface roughness and surface tension were extensively analyzed as systematical variables.Importantly, bone forming cell, osteoblast adhesion was increased in high density of hydro fluidic treated surface structures, i.e., in greater nanoscale surface roughness and in high surface areas through increasing pore densities. All results delineate the importance of surface topography parameter (pores) inNiTi to increase the biocompatibility of NiTi in identical chemistry which is crucial factor for determining biomaterials.
Since carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are discovered, tremendous attentions have been paid to these materials due to their unique mechanical, electrical and chemical properties. Thereupon, many methods to produce a large scale of CNTs have been contrived by many scientists and engineers. Thus the examination of growth mechanisms of CNTs, which is essential to produce CNTs in large scale, has been an attractive issue. Though many scientists have been strived to investigate and understand the growth mechanisms of CNTs, many of them still remain controversial or unclear. Here we introduce representative growth mechanisms of CNTs, based on broadly employed fabrication methods of CNTs. We applied Thermo-electrical Pulse Induced Evaporation (TPIE) method based on field and thermal evaporation to synthesis of CNTs. However TPIE method was originally devised to fabricate graphene sheets and $Ge_2Sb_2Te_5$ nanostructures. While performing TPIE experiments to synthesize graphene, we eventually found experimental results widely supporting the growth model of CNTs proposed already. We observed the procedure of growth of CNTs obtained by TPIE method through Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). We believe this study provides an experimental basis on understanding and investigating carbon-based nanomaterials.
Activated carbon (AC) with very large surface area has high capacitance per weight. However, such activation methods tend to suffer from low yields, below 50%, and are low in electrode density and capacitance per volume. Carbon NanoFibers (CNFs) had high surface area polarizability, high electrical conductivity and chemical stability, as well as extremely high mechanical strength and modulus, which make them an important material for electrochemical capacitors. The electrochemical properties of immobilized CNF electrodes were studied for use as in electrical double layer capacitor (EDLC) applications. Immobilized CNFs on Ni foam grown by thermal chemical vapor deposition (CVD) were successfully fabricated. CNFs had a uniform diameter range from 50 to 60 nm. Surface area was 56 m$^2$/g. CNF electrodes were compared with AC and multi wall carbon nanotube (MWNT) electrodes. The electrochemical performance of the various electrodes was examined with aqueous electrolyte of 2M KOH. Equivalent series resistance (ESR) of the CNF electrodes was lower than that of AC and MWNT electrodes. The specific capacitance of 47.5 F/g of the CNF electrodes was achieved with discharge current density of 1 mA/cm$^2$.
In order to meet the requirements of faster speed and higher packing density for devices in the field of semiconductor manufacturing, the development of Cu/Low k device material is explored for use in multi-layer interconnection. SiOC(-H) thin films containing alkylgroup are considered the most promising among all the other low k candidate materials for Cu interconnection, which materials are intended to replace conventional Al wiring. Their promising character is due to their thermal and mechanical properties, which are superior to those of organic materials such as porous $SiO_2$, SiOF, polyimides, and poly (arylene ether). SiOC(-H) thin films containing alkylgroup are generally prepared by PECVD method using trimethoxysilane as precursor. Nano voids in the film originating from the sterichindrance of alkylgroup lower the dielectric constant of the film. In this study, methyltriphenylsilane containing bulky substitute was prepared and characterized by using NMR, single-crystal X-ray, GC-MS, GPC, FT-IR and TGA analyses. Solid-state NMR is utilized to investigate the insoluble samples and the chemical shift of $^{29}Si$. X-ray single crystal results confirm that methyltriphenylsilane is composed of one Si molecule, three phenyl rings and one methyl molecule. When methyltriphenylsilane decomposes, it produces radicals such as phenyl, diphenyl, phenylsilane, diphenylsilane, triphenylsilane, etc. From the analytical data, methyltriphenylsilane was found to be very efficient as a CVD or PECVD precursor.
