  • To meet tight tolerance requirements of mass produced shafts which are subcomponents of automobile parts, an automated measuring system has been developed. The system comprises of a non-contact shaft diameter measuring instrument using laser, a feed mechanism of a step motor and ball screw and a personal computer. The system can determine pass-fail of the piece under test and also analyze data for statistical process control.

  • Newly constructed plate shape control system, using attached shape measuring instruments and work roll bender, was put in service in No. 2 Plate Mill, POSCO. Recently, customers demand the improvement of flatness and plate crown accuracy. Many competition Plate Mill introducted shape control system, for example, pair cross mill, work roll bender which includes shape measuring instrument and shape control mathematical models, and No. 2 Plate Mill, POSCO introducted work roll bender and shape measuring instruments. This report describes the properties of No. 2 Plate Mill shape control system and work roll bender.

Analysis of a Trend of Instrument Usage to Assess Cognitive Function of Breast Cancer Patients Undergoing Chemotherapy (항암화학요법으로 인한 유방암 환자의 인지기능 측정도구 사용 실태 분석)

  • Purpose: This study analyzed recent trends of instrument usage assessing cognitive function of breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Methods: The researcher collected 64 studies outside the country that were published between January 1996 and August 2010. Results: There was no study on the instrument assessing all domains of cognitive function in breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Most instruments assessing cognitive function of breast cancer patients have been used for patients with dementia, depression, and/or organic brain damage. Also the objective neuropsychological tests such as the grooved pegboard for the psychomotor area, RCFT copy in visuospatial skill area and the WAIS-III block design have low sensitivity for measuring cognitive function in breast cancer patients, thus they are not good for applying to breast cancer patients. Conclusion: There is a need to develop an instrument which has good sensitivity and specificity for measuring the cognitive function of the breast cancer patients who experienced cognitive impairment after chemotherapy treatment. In addition, the developed instrument needs to be accessible and feasible in any nursing clinical setting for the purpose of accurate assessment and evaluation of the cognitive function among breast cancer patients.

The Development of an Instrument for the Measuring Cognitive Conflict Levels of Elementary Students Confronted with an Anomalous Situation in Science Learning (과학학습에서 불일치 상황에 대면한 초등학생의 인지갈등 측정 도구 개발)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop an Instrument for the Measurement of Cognitive Conflict Levels of students who confronted with an anomalous situation in science teaming. Anomalous situation is generated when students' prediction is disconsistent with the observed fact. In this study, the researchers identified 4 components of cognitive conflict and developed three items for each component. The items were developed and revised by four pilot tests. In the first pilot test, 55 elementary school students participated in the test In the second pilot test, 88 students of the 5th and 6th grader participated in the test. The instrument of measuring cognitive conflict levels was given to the subjects right after demonstrating anomalous situation. For the demonstration, two different problem situations were developed: one was a pulley problem and the other was electric bulbs in parallel. Answered reasons for each items were analyzed to assess students' understanding on each items. In third pilot test, 125 elementary school students participated in the test. A factor analysis of the responses was carried out and reliability of the test was assessed by calculating internal consistency values. The items were finalized by three pilot tests. After 1 month after the third pilot test, researchers conducted the finalized test items to 323 students of the 5th and 6th grader. The final instrument showed moderate reliability (Cronbach-α 0.82∼0.87) and good content validity(0.93). A factor analysis of the response was carried out. 4 main factors completely coincided with 4 components that we supposed to be the conducts of cognitive conflict. The instrument can provide a means for both teachers and researchers to assess the cognitive conflict of a large number of students within a single class period. The results can be used by teachers to better understand the process of conceptual change of their students and to match instruction and materials accordingly.

  • The battery's State of Health (SOH) is a critical parameter in the process of battery use, as it represents the Remaining Useful Life (RUL) of the battery. Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) is a widely used technique in observing the state of the battery. The measured impedance at certain frequencies can be used to evaluate the state of the battery, as it is intimately tied to the underlying chemical reactions. In this work, a low-cost portable EIS instrument is developed on the basis of the ARM Cortex-M4 Microcontroller Unit (MCU) for measuring the impedance spectrum of Li-ion battery packs. The MCU uses a built-in DAC module to generate the sinusoidal sweep perturbation signal. Moreover, it performs the dual-channel acquisition of voltage and current signals, calculates impedance using a Digital Lock-in Amplifier (DLA), and transmits the result to a PC. By using LabVIEW, an interface was developed with the real-time display of the EIS information. The developed instrument was suitable for measuring the impedance spectrum of the battery pack up to 1000 V. The measurement frequency range of the instrument was from 1 hz to 1 Khz. Then, to prove the performance of the developed system, the impedance of a Samsung SM3 battery pack and a Bexel pouch module were measured and compared with those obtained by the commercial instrument.

  • The measurement of the silent period of Masseter muscle is very useful diagnostic method of TMJ syndrome. In this paper, we design a very convenient and very low-priced medical instrument for dental research which does not need gain control to each patient for measuring the silent period and the data processing time is very short. The result of SP measurement using this instrument is 20-30ms in normal subjects and about 60ms in TMJ patient, and the data processing time is 0.5 second.

Development of a Measurement of Intellectual Capital for Hospital Nursing Organizations (병원 간호조직의 지적자본 측정도구 개발)

  • Purpose: This study was done to develop an instrument for measuring intellectual capital and assess its validity and reliability in identifying the components, human capital, structure capital and customer capital of intellectual capital in hospital nursing organizations. Methods: The participants were 950 regular clinical nurses who had worked for over 13 months in 7 medical hospitals including 4 national university hospitals and 3 private university hospitals. The data were collected through a questionnaire survey done from July 2 to August 25, 2009. Data from 906 nurses were used for the final analysis. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Cronbach's alpha coefficients, item analysis, factor analysis (principal component analysis, Varimax rotation) with the SPSS $PC^+$ 17.0 for Windows program. Results: Developing the instrument for measuring intellectual capital in hospital nursing organizations involved a literature review, development of preliminary items, and verification of validity and reliability. The final instrument was in a self-report form on a 5-point Likert scale. There were 29 items on human capital (5 domains), 21 items on customer capital (4 domains), 26 items on structure capital (4 domains). Conclusion: The results of this study may be useful to assess the levels of intellectual capital of hospital nursing organizations.

Estimation of Vertical Interaction Force to the End of a Surgical Instrument by Measuring Reaction Force to the Trocar Support (트로카 고정부에 작용하는 반력을 측정하여 수술도구 말단의 수직방향 상호작용 힘을 추정하는 방법)

  • This paper proposes a method to estimate vertical interaction force to the end of the surgical instrument by measuring reaction force at the part supporting the trocar. Relation between the force to the trocar and the interaction force is derived using the beam theory. The vertical interaction force is modeled as a function of the reaction force to the trocar and the distance between the drape plate and the trocar. Experimental results show that error is induced by the asymmetric shape of the trocar tip because contact position between the instrument and the trocar tip is changed depending on the direction of the interaction force. The theoretical relation, therefore, is compensated and reduced. Average $L_2$ relative error of the estimated force in the x-direction and the y-direction is 5.81 % and 5.99 %, respectively.

  • Recently, automatic control or application of measuring instrument with computers is rapidly increasing. In this paper we designed automatic incubation system that has functions of control and monitoring of measuring instrument, analysis of measured data, and automatic control by using LabVIEW graphic program that can easily collect, control, analyze, and apply data. Then to inspect the system we produced Incubator. Internal environment is measured by a sensor and each device is setting and controlled to create the optimum environment after finding hatching environment of selected individual from Database file for incubation. Through this functions, problems of hatching rate and quality that were affected by minute change of hatching environment are dealt successfully with, and retrenchment of labor and cost is expected as well.
