Vertical velocity is critical in many areas, such as the control of unmanned aerial vehicles, fall detection, and virtual reality. Conventionally, the integration of GPS (Global Positioning System) with an IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) was popular for the estimation of vertical components. However, GPS cannot work well indoors and, more importantly, has low accuracy in the vertical direction. In order to overcome these issues, IMU-barometer integration has been suggested instead of IMU-GPS integration. This paper proposes a new complementary filter for the estimation of vertical velocity based on IMU-barometer integration. The proposed complementary filter is designed to minimize drift error in the estimated velocity by adding PID control in addition to a zero velocity update technique.

Borescopes facilitate the inspection of areas inside machines and systems that are not directly accessible for visual inspection. They offer real-time, up-close access to confined and hard-to-access spaces without having to dismantle or destructure the object under inspection. Borescopes are ideal instruments for routine maintenance, quality inspection and monitoring of systems and structures. The main application being fault or defect detection, it is useful to have measuring capability to quantify object dimensions in a target area. High-end borescopes use multi-optic solutions to provide measurement information of viewed objects. Multi-optic solutions can provide accurate measurements at the expense of structural complexity and cost increase. Measuring functionality is often unavailable in low-end, single camera borescopes. In this paper, a single camera measurement solution that enables the size estimation of viewed objects is proposed. The proposed solution computes and overlays a scaled grid of known spacing value over the screen view, enabling the human inspector to estimate the size of the objects in view. The proposed method provides a simple means of measurement that is applicable to low-end borescopes with no built-in measurement capability.
This Paper presents a general algorithm for the parameter estimation of an antoregressive moving average process observed in additive white noise. The algorithm is based on the Gauss-Newton recursive prediction error method. For the parameter estimation, the output measurement is modelled as an innovation process using the spectral factorization, so that noise free RPE ARMA estimation can be used. Using apriori known properties leads to algorithm with smaller computation and better accuracy be the parsimony principle. Computer simulation examples show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.
This paper is concerned with attitude estimation using low cost, small-sized accelerometers and gyroscopes. A two step extended Kalman filter is proposed, which adaptively compensates external acceleration. External acceleration is the main source of estimation error. In the proposed filter, direction of external acceleration is estimated. According to the estimated direction, the accelerometer measurement covariance matrix of the two step extended Kalman filter is adjusted. The proposed algorithm is verified through experiments.
Train is one of the most famous and convenient transporting ways. However, the noise problem caused by the train hinders people from living in a silent environment. Furthermore, this problem is related with the environmental rights of people nearby the railroad. The estimation of train noise is the pre-research of train noise reduction. This research is about measurement and analysis of train noise which can be a base-study about the estimation of train n(lise. The noise of ‘Mugungwha’ train, the most frequently used train in Korea, is the main object in this measurement and analysis. The characteristics of the train noise were evident in the criteria of height, distance and velocity. Furthermore, the noise differences between locomotive and passenger coach were observable.
The paper describes estimation errors of unsteady flowrate measurements due to parameter changes in a quasi-remote instantaneous flowrate measurement method (abbreviate as QIFM) and an instantaneous flowrate measurement method using two points pressure measurements (abbreviate as TPFM). By introducing error performance index, the influence of parameter changes on the accuracy, and dynamic response of the estimated unsteady flowrate are evaluated. Of four parameters, the variation of the length of the pipeline and speed of sound produce large errors in the estimated unsteady flowrate during transient periods. The effect of kinematic viscosity of the working fluid(oil) is relatively insensitive in unsteady flowrate estimation.
This paper proposes the hybrid Complex-PSO algorithm based on the complex search method and particle swarm optimization (PSO) for unconstrained optimization. This hybridization intends to produce faster and more accurate convergence to the optimum value. These hybrid will concentrate on determining the dynamic load model parameters, the ZIP model and induction motor model parameters. Measurement-based parameter estimation, which employs measurement data to derive load model parameters, is used. The theoretical foundation of the measurement-based approach is system identification. The main objective of this paper is to demonstrate how the standard particle swarm optimization and complex method can be improved through hybridization of the two methods and the results will be compared with that of their original forms.
A measurement of conduction veloctiy of the action potentials along the muscle fibres has been applied to various diagnosis. When we measure muscle fiber conduction velocity, it occurs that not only change of conduction velocity but alos inclusion of mipulse component by physiological and experimental reason. So, robuster time delay estimation algorithm than general methods[1] is needed to find correct time delay form these signals. In this paper we, propose new time delay estimation algorithms, robust in impulsive noise, by using characteristic of .alpha.-stable distribution whcih defines impulsive noise well. Then we apply proposed algorthms to measure muscle fiber conduction velocity and compare them with other studies.
High temporal-resolution and accurate measurement of skin impedance locus provides useful data for the identification of the physiological/psychological changes and also the identification of acupuncture point. An impedance spectroscopy method using digitally constructed current waveform consisting of many frequency components (multiples of 1Hz) was reported3. The time resolution of the method depends on the lowest frequency used in the waveform construction, and therefore, the measurement would be faster if the lowest frequency is the higher. However, it was not clear that how many and how low frequencies must be used for the estimation of the skin impedance parameters from which the impedance locus can be drawn. This study shows the relationship between the estimation error of the impedance parameters and the frequency coverage of the spectroscopy. The results of this study are expected to serve as the reference of the frequency selection in the impedance spectroscopy.
In this paper, the Iterated Consider Extended Kalman Filter (ICEKF) is proposed for bearing-only localization of GNSS interference to improve the estimation performance and filter consistency. The ICEKF is an extended version of Consider KF (CKF) for Iterated EKF (IEKF) to consider an effect of bearing measurement bias error to filter covariance. The ICEKF can mitigate the EKF divergence problem which can occur when linearizing the nonlinear bearing measurement by a large initial state error. Also, it can mitigate filter inconsistency problem of EKF and IEKF which can occur when a weakly observable bearing measurement bias error state is not included in filter state vector. The simulation result shows that the localization error of the ICEKF is smaller than the EKF and IEKF, and the Root Mean Square (RMS) estimation error of ICEKF matches the covariance of filter.
