  • This study investigated the effects of a teaching process using dynamic assessment for a unit on young children's measurement ability. Subjects were 45 5-year-old children in a kindergarten in Busan. The instrument was the Dynamic Assessment Tools for Young Children's Measurement Ability (Hwang & Ko, 2(07). Assessment consisted of four steps: pre-test, learning, transfer, post-test. Results were that at post-test, there were significant differences in scores of measurement ability between the dynamic assessment and control groups. In the dynamic assessment group there was significant improvement in length, width and weight between pre- and post-tests and there were significant shifts of measurement strategies and measurement errors between the pre- and post-tests.

  • Objective: The aim of this study is to analyze the reliability assessment of work environment measurement, and to propose ways of improving the system. Methods: We have reviewed reports and articles on the reliability assessment written by KOSHA and academia in order to analyze problems related with the system and propose the alternatives. Results: There are three ways to improve the system of the reliability assessment. First of all, it is necessary to perform the reliability assessment by measuring the work environment when workers raise questions about the results so we can make workers trust these results of the reliability assessment. Secondly, we should inspect the workplace at first, not the work environment service provider, so we can increase the employer's recognition of his duty to practice the work environment measurement. Thirdly, the technical committee is needed for technical issues related with the work environment measurement. Conclusions: Above all, it is crucial to get the workers' interest and trust to improve the work environment measurement. The reliability assessment should support the meaning and value of the work environment measurement by practicing the reliability assessment whenever workers have a demand for this and operating the technical committee.

  • The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, which has continuously evaluated the performance of healthcare systems, has recently invested much effort into hospital performance measurement. The purpose of this paper is to introduce the hospital performance measurement programs operated by international organizations or at the national level based on the OECD's hospital performance project. Health Insurance Review & Assessment service (HIRA)'s quality assessment was analyzed based on the analytical framework of the OECD's hospital performance project. The hospital performance measurement programs of WHO, Canada, Australia, United States and United Kingdom are briefly explored, in view of the conceptual framework, key performance dimensions and indicators that are currently in use. The OECD suggested seven key dimensions of hospital performance: timeliness, efficiency, continuity, effectiveness and appropriateness, staff orientation, patient orientation and safety. The analysis of the quality assessment program of HIRA, which operates 36 diseases and procedures and 347 indicators, shows that the numbers of indicators are relatively small in the areas of safety, patient centeredness and efficiency. Continuity of care and staff orientation are not fully developed also, but the situations are similar in other countries. In conclusion, hospital performance measurement using stable and comprehensive data should be developed to improve overall system performance, and discussions on a conceptual framework that can lay out directions and key performance domains need to take into place.

  • Large areas must be rapidly screened to monitor radiation in marine environments. For this purpose, this study developed a mobile real-time gamma-ray measurement system for shipboard use and evaluated its performance. The system was developed to measure engine or generator cooling water by installing a canister inside the ship. The minimum detectable activity of the system is about 0.8 Bq/L for a 60 s measurement period, and real-time data transmission and remote control are possible. The system was tested in the field and is currently being installed and operated on ships in service. Such a ship-based real-time gamma-radiation measurement system is suitable for a wide range of marine radiation surveillance applications and is expected to be rapidly deployed.

  • Monte Carlo simulation(MC) method was used as an uncertainty assessment tool for gas flow measurement in this paper. Uncertainty sources for gas flow measurement were analyzed, and probability distribution characteristics of each source were discussed. Detailed MC methodology was described including the effect of the number of simulation. The uncertainty result was compared with that of the conventional sensitivity coefficient method, and it was revealed that the results were different from each other for this particular gas flow measurement case of which the modelling equation was nonlinear. The MC was comparatively simple, convenient and accurate as an uncertainty assessment method, especially in cases of complex, nonlinear measurement modelling equations. It was noted that the uncertainty assessment method should be selected carefully according to the mathematical characteristics of the measurement.

  • Exact and precise noise measurement is the basis for the reduction measure R&D, impact assessment and prediction modeling for railway noise. In this study, research trend as well as national and international noise measurement standard are investigated. For the estimation of vertical radiation characteristics of railway noise, specially devised zig was used. From the noise measurement and analysis, exact noise height radiated from the railway was characterized. The obtained results will be used for the suggestion of the height of microphone position of railway noise measurements.

  • Objectives The purpose of this study is to analyze the current status of measurement instruments used to evaluate pain and function for shoulder disease patients in Korean Medicine clinical studies published in South Korea. Methods 5 Korean online databases from January 2007 to July 2017 were used to source articles for the review. Data of pain and function assessment instruments, measurement methods, time point and frequency for shoulder assessment were extracted. And it was analyzed by investigating the frequency of use for each item. Results A total of 78 studies met the selection criteria. There were many studies with no description for pain assessment instruments or inconsistent measurement methods. In the function assessment, the frequency of use was low and there were a lot of use of instruments with low validity and reliability. Conclusions To develop the objectivity of clinical research, further clinical studies, active use of measurement instruments, and standardization of measurement methods are needed.

  • This study analyzed the effects of dynamic assessment in terms of scaffolding group types and young children's measurement ability levels. Participants were five-year-old children in Busan divided into 2 experimental groups and control groups. The Assessment Tools for Young Children's Measurement Ability (Ko & Hwang, 2008) consisted of 4 sub tests for ‘length', 'width', and 'weight' concepts. Data were analyzed by t-test and ANOVA. Results showed significant differences between experimental and control groups in post-test scores, but no significant differences between individual and peer collaboration groups in amount of scaffolding. Significant improvements showed in all of the measurement ability level groups : individual higher, individual lower, peer collaboration higher and peer collaboration lower level scaffolding groups.

  • In this paper, Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) method was used as an uncertainty assessment tool for air flow, net thrust measurement. Uuncertainty sources of the net thrust measurement were analyzed, and the probability distribution characteristics of each source were discussed. Detailed MCS methodology was described including the effect of the number of simulation. Compared to the conventional sensitivity coefficient method, the MCS method has advantage in the uncertainty assessment. The MCS is comparatively simple, convenient and accurate, especially for complex or nonlinear measurement modeling equations. The uncertainty assessment result by MCS was compared with that of the conventional sensitivity coefficient method, and each method gave different result. The uncertainties in the net thrust measurement by the MCS and the conventional sensitivity coefficient method were 0.906% and 1.209%, respectively. It was concluded that the first order Taylor expansion in the conventional sensitivity coefficient method and the nonlinearity of model equation caused the difference. It was noted that the uncertainty assessment method should be selected carefully according to the mathematical characteristics of the model equation of the measurement.
