A Study on Adhesive Properties of Cellulose Triacetate Film by Argon Low Temperature Plasma Treatment (아르곤 저온 플라즈마 처리에 의한 CTA 필름의 접착성 연구)

  • The polarizing film application exploits the unique physicochemical properties between PVA(Poly vinyl alcohol) film and CTA(Cellulose triacetate) film. However, hardly any research was aimed at improving the adhesion characteristics of the CTA film by radio frequency(RF) plasma treatment at argon(Ar) gaseous state. In this report, we deal with surface treatment technology for protective CTA film developed specifically for high adhesion applications. After Ar plasma, surface of the films is analyzed by atomic force microscopy(AFM), roughness parameter and peel strength. Furthermore, the wetting properties of the CTA film were studied by contact angle analysis. Results obtained for CTA films treated with a glow discharge showed that this technique is sensitive to newly created physical functions. The roughness and peel strength value increased with an increase in treatment time for initial treatment, but showed decreasing trend for continuous treatment time. The result of contact angle measurement refer that the hydrophilicity of surface was increased. AFM studies indicated that no considerable change of surface morphology occurred up to 3 minutes of treatment time, but a considerable uneven of surface structure resulted from treating time after 5 minutes.

Wind tunnel study of wind structure at a mountainous bridge location

  • Wind tunnel tests of a 1/2200-scale mountainous terrain model have been carried out to investigate local wind characteristics at a bridge location in southeast Tibet, China. Flows at five key locations on the bridge at deck level were measured for 26 directions. It was observed that wind characteristics (including mean wind velocity and overall turbulence intensity) vary significantly depending on the approaching wind direction and measurement position. The wind inclination angle measured in the study fluctuated between $-18^{\circ}$ and $+16^{\circ}$ and the ratio of mean wind velocity to reference wind velocity was small when the wind inclination angles were large, especially for positive wind inclination angles. The design standard wind speed and the minimum critical wind speed for flutter rely on the wind inclination angle and should be determined from the results of such tests. The variation of wind speed with wind inclination angles should be of the asymmetry step type. The turbulence characteristics of the wind were found to be similar to real atmospheric flows.

Analysis of Middle-aged Men's Frontal Body Shape Asymmetry using 3D Body Scan Data (3차원 인체 스캔 데이터를 활용한 중년 남성 정면 비대칭 체형 특성 분석)

  • This study aims to analyze middle-aged men's frontal body shape asymmetry by measuring the left and right body dimensions and angles of 388 middle-aged men aged 40 to 59 using 3D body scan data and comparing the measured values. The study also compares the measured values of width, height, and angle and their relationships using Size Korea's anthropometric measurement and posture index of the New York Posture Rating Scale. The results confirm that the asymmetric shape characteristics of the upper and lower body appear differently. In addition, the asymmetrical characteristics between the upper and lower body differed, indicating that the close parts of the body affect each other. Similar to the difference in the left and right frontal body shapes and the average angle distribution, the asymmetrical upper and lower body characteristics also are found to be dissimilar when the correlations are examined. In contrast, there is no asymmetry in the width, height, and angle considering the age and BMI groups. Finally, the study classifies three body types and identifies their asymmetric characteristics. Overall, this study contributes primary data for further research on pattern production for asymmetric and unique body types and the development of customized apparel products.

Drag Reduction of a Three-Dimensional Car Model Using Passive Control Device (수동제어 장치를 이용한 3 차원 자동차 모형의 항력감소)

  • In this study, a passive control using a boat-tail device is conducted for a three-dimensional car model in ground proximity. We consider various boat-tails and investigate the mechanism of drag reduction by them. By varying the length and slant angle of boat-tail, we obtain drag reductions up to 40%. From the oil-surface flow visualization and hot-wire measurement, the drag reduction by the boat-tail is characterized by the shear-layer instability and reattachment on the boat-tail, forming a small separation bubble at the upstream part of boat-tail surface, resulting in the delay of main separation and drag reduction. At high slant angles, the flow fully separates and drag is nearly same as that of no control.

  • Bolting degradation problems in primary coolant pressure boundary applications have become a major concern in the nuclear industry. In the bolts concerned, the failure mechanism was either corrosion wastage(loss of bolt diameter) or stress-corrosion cracking.(3) Here the manual ultrasonic testing of RPV(Reactor Pressure Vessel) and RCP(Reactor Coolant Pump) stud has been performed. But it is difficult to detect indications because examiner can not exactly control the rotation angle and can not distinguish the indication from signals of bolt. In many cases, the critical sizes of damage depth are very small(1-2 mm order). At critical size, the crack tends to propagatecompletly through the bolt under stress, Resulting in total fracture.(3) Automatic stud scanner for studs(bolts) was developed because the precise measurement of bolt diameter is required in this circumstance. By use of this scanner, the rotation angle of probe was exactly controlled and the exposure time of radiations was reduced.

Experimental Study on the Film Cooling Effectiveness on a Flat Plate with Anti-Vortex Holes

  • In this paper, the effects of the anti-vortex hole angle and blowing ratio on the flat plate film cooling effectiveness were experimentally investigated. For the film cooling effectiveness measurement, pressure sensitive paint technique was applied. The experiments were conducted for cylindrical and anti-vortex film cooling holes, and three blowing ratios of 0.25, 0.5, and 1.0 were tested. Two anti-vortex hole angles of 0 and 15 degree with respect to the flow direction were considered. For the cylindrical hole case, the film cooling effectiveness decreased as the blowing ratio increased because of the coolant lift-off. For the angle anti-vortex hole cases, however, higher blowing ratio resulted in higher film cooling effectiveness due to the reduced actual blowing ratio and diminished kidney vortex. For all blowing ratio, the angled anti-vortex hole case showed the highest film cooling effectiveness.

  • In order to measure non-intrusively velocity profile in liquid metal flow, a modified electromagnetic flowmeter was designed, which was based on electromagnetic tomography technique. Under the assumption that flow is fully-developed, axisymmetric and rectilinear, the velocity profile was reconstructed after the flowmeter equation, the first kind of Fredholm integration equation, was linearized. In reconstruction process Tikhonov regularization method with regularization parameter was used. The reconstructed velocity profile had the nearly same as turbulent flow profile which was approximately represented as log law. In addition, flowmeter output fur a fixed magnet rotation angle was linearly proportional to flow rate. When magnet rotation angle was 54$^{\circ}$, axisymmetric weight function was nearly uniform so that the flowmeter gives a constant signal for any fully-developed, axisymmetric and rectilinear profile with a constant flow rate.

  • The optical current transformer was developed for 170 kV GIS using optical fiber. The sensor optimized on the optical CT was wound 3 turns and twisted 4 times per a turn at the pipe with a diameter of 130 m. To optimize the optical CT, the output signal was measured according to the setting angle of polarizer and analyzer, The asymmetry and distortion of the output signals were improved when the parallel polarized light was incident to the fiber sensor and under the angle of analyzer was $45^{o}$. The measurement error for the linearity was only $\pm{0.42}\;\%$ to 1,000 A in the case of reflection type.

Intelligent robotic walker with actively controlled human interaction

  • In this study, we developed a robotic walker that actively controls its speed and direction of movement according to the user's gait intention. Sensor fusion between a low-cost light detection and ranging (LiDAR) sensor and inertia measurement units (IMUs) helps determine the user's gait intention. The LiDAR determines the walking direction by detecting both knees, and the IMUs attached on each foot obtain the angular rate of the gait. The user's gait intention is given as the directional angle and the speed of movement. The two motors in the robotic walker are controlled with these two variables, which represent the user's gait intention. The estimated direction angle is verified by comparison with a Kinect sensor that detects the centroid trajectory of both the user's feet. We validated the robotic walker with an experiment by controlling it using the estimated gait intention.

  • Applications for developed non-prism total station which can decides three dimensional position without prism are increasing in variety survey fields. However, distance measurement using non-prism method is lower accurate than prism method because laser strength reflected from materials is varied by angle of reflection and materials. Therefore, distance measured using non-prism total station by angle of reflection and materials is compared with that using pnsm method, and its characters are introduced applying non prism total station in topographic surveying.
