Direct numerical simulations of turbulent channel flows with moving wall conditions on the top wall are performed to examine the effects of the moving wall on the turbulent characteristics. The moving wall velocity only applied to the top wall with the opposite direction to the main flow is systematically varied to reveal the sustained-mechanism for turbulence. The turbulence statistics for the Couette-Poiseuille flow, such as mean velocity, root mean square of the velocity fluctuations, Reynolds shear stress and pre-multiplied energy spectra of the velocity fluctuations, are compared with those of canonical turbulent channel flows. The comparison suggests that although the turbulent activity on the top wall increases with increasing the Reynolds number, that on the bottom wall decreases, contrary to the previous finding for the canonical turbulent channel flows. The increase of the turbulent energy on the top wall is attributed to not only the increase of the Reynolds number but also elongation of the logarithmic layer due to increase of the wall layer on the top wall. However, because the logarithmic layer is shortened on the bottom wall due to the decrease of the wall layer, the turbulence energy on the bottom wall decreases despite of the increase of the Reynolds number.
This study is focussed on the investigation of spray characteristics from the high pressure gasoline injector for the application of gasoline direct injection engine. For the analysis of spray structure of high pressure gasoline injector; the laser scattering method with a Nd-Yag laser and the Phase Doppler particle analyzer system were applied to observe the spray development and the measurement of the droplet size and velocity of the spray, respectively. Also spatial velocity distribution of the spray droplet was measured by use of the particle image velocity system. Experimental results show that high pressure gasoline injector shapes the hollow-cone spray, and produce the upward ring shaped vortex on the spray surface region. This upward ring shaped vortex promotes the secondary atomization of fuel droplets and contributes to a uniform distribution of fuel droplets. Most of fuel droplets are distributed under 31$\mu m$ of the mean droplet size (SMD) and the frequency distribution of the droplet size under 25$\mu m$ is over 95% at 7 MPa of injection pressure. According to the experimental results of PIV system, the flow patterns of the droplets velocity distribution in spray region are in good agreement with the spray macroscopic behaviors obtained from the visualization investigation.
Recently, two energy-based response parameters, i.e., the absolute and the relative elastic input energy equivalent velocity, have been receiving a lot of research attention. Several studies, in fact, have demonstrated the potential of these intensity measures in the prediction of the seismic structural response. Although some ground motion prediction equations have been developed for these parameters, they only provide marginal distributions without information about the joint occurrence of the spectral values at different periods. In order to build new prediction models for the two equivalent velocities, a large set of ground motion records is used to calculate the correlation coefficients between the response spectral values corresponding to different periods and components of the ground motion. Then, functional forms adopted in models from the literature are calibrated to fit the obtained data. A new functional form is proposed to improve the predictions of the considered models from the literature. The components of the ground motion considered in this study are the two horizontal ones only. Potential uses of the proposed equations in addition to the prediction of the correlation coefficients of the equivalent velocity spectral values are shown, such as the prediction of derived intensity measures and the development of conditional mean spectra.
The turbulent flows in a tunnel mock-up($10L{\times}0.5W{\times}0.25H$ m3 : scale reduction 1/20) with rectangular cross section were investigated. The instantaneous velocity fields of Re = 49,029, 89,571 were measured by the 2-D PIV system which is consisted of double pulsed Nd:Yag laser and the tracer particles in the straight-duct mock-up where the flows were fully developed. The mean velocity profiles were taken from the ensemble averages of 1,000 instantaneous velocity fields. Simultaneously, numerical simulations(RANS) were performed to compare with experimental data using STREAM code. Non-linear eddy viscosity model (NLEVM : Abe-Jang-Leschziner Eddy Viscosity Model) was employed to resolve the turbulent flows in the duct. The calculated mean velocity profiles were well compared with PIV results. In the log-law profiles, the experimental data were in good agreement with numerical simulations all the way to the wake region except the viscous sub-layer (near wall region).
An experimental analysis of the flow inside the refrigeration compartment of a home refrigerator was conducted in order to achieve better performances in terms of uniform temperature distribution and cooling speed. 2D PIV and stereoscopic PIV were used for the experiments on an actual-size refrigerator at operating conditions. Two CCD cameras were employed for a wider field of view in the measurement of the shelf, and stereoscopic PIV was used to measure the three velocity components at the various cooling duct outlets and the mean velocity fields were area-integrated to calculate the flow-rates. 50 to 100 instantaneous velocity fields were time averaged for the mean velocity fields. With the result of this analysis, a new cooling duct system was developed, with the refrigerator's cooling performance increasing 11% in terms of cooling speed, and 25% in temperature uniformity.
Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of participation in contact sports on neurocognitive scores, dual-task walking velocity, and cognitive costs in retired athletes. Method: Forty-four retired athletes (mean age = 26.4±5.5 yrs) and thirty-eight controls (mean age = 26.1±4.9 yrs) participated in this study. Neurocognitive score was collected using computerized neurocognitive testing using RehaCom. Gait velocity was collected one single task, four dual-tasks, and two multi-tasks using Optogait. Mann-Whitney U test was performed to compared differences in cognitive scores among groups. A mixed-design two-way ANOVA and Bonferroni posthoc test were used to assess the effect of group and walking tasks for each condition. Results: The auditory divided attention of neurocognitive score of retired athletes was higher than the control group (p < 0.05). No statistical differences were observed in the other neurocognitive scores between groups. The changes in walking velocity and cognitive costs according to the dual-task walking tests differed between the two groups (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Although participation in contact sports did not affect the neurocognitive results of retired athletes, it could be confirmed that the reduction in walking velocity and an increase in cognitive costs during dual-task walking. Rather than observing only neurocognitive scores as a single evaluation item for cognitive evaluation of retired athletes in relation to daily life, the application of the dual-task gait test may provide useful information.

Surface Image Velocimetry(SIV) is an instrument to measure water surface velocity by using image processing techniques. Since SIV is a non-contact type measurement method, it is very effective and useful to measure water surface velocity for steep mountainous streams, such as streams in Jeju island. In the present study, a surface imaging velocimetry system was used to calculate the flow rate for flood event due to a typhoon. At the same time, two types of electromagnetic surface velocimetries (electromagnetic surface current meter and Kalesto) were used to observe flow velocities and compare the accuracies of each instrument. The comparison showed that for velocity distributions root mean square error(RMSE) was 0.33 and R-squared was 0.72. For discharge measurements, root mean square error(RMSE) reached 6.04 and R-squared did 0.92. It means that surface image velocimetry could be used as an alternative method for electromagnetic surface velocimetries in measuring flood discharge.

To derive coronal temperature, electron density and nonthermal velocity, we have analyzed high resolution spectra (e.g., Fe XII 338.3, Fe XII 352.1, Fe XIV 334.2, Fe XIV 353.8, Fe XV 284.2, Fe XV 321.8, Fe XV 327.0, Fe XVI 335.4, and Fe XVI 360.8) taken from AR 6615 by SERTS (Solar Extreme Ultraviolet Rocket Telescope and Spectrograph). Important findings emerging from the present study are as follows: (1) Temperature estimated from Fe XVI 335.4 and Fe XIV, 334.2 is $\~2.4\times10^6 K$ and no systematic difference in temperature is found between the active region and its adjacent quiet region; (2) Mean electron density estimated from Fe XV is $\~3\times10^9 cm^{-3}\;and\;\~10^{10} cm^{-3}$ from Fe XII and Fe XIV; (3) Mean density of the active region is found to be higher than that of the quiet region by a factor of 2; (4) Nonthermal velocity estimated from Fe XV and Fe XVI is $20\times25 km\;s^{-l}$ which decreases with increasing ionization temperatures. This supports the notion that the nonthermal velocity declines outwards above the transition region.

A discharge measurement is difficult in flood season which is especially important in the water resources field and the continuous discharge measurement for all rivers is impossible on the present system. So, the stage-discharge curve has been used for a long time to produce discharge data of rivers. However, there has been problems from a reliability angle due to the fact that this method uses only stage-discharge relationship, although the stage-discharge curve has the convenience. Therefore, a new mean velocity equation was derived by using Chiu's 2D velocity formula of the entropy concept in this paper. The derived equation reflected hydraulic characteristics such as the depth, gravity acceleration, hydraulic radius, energy slope, kinematic coefficient of viscosity, etc. and estimated also a maximum velocity. In addition, this method verified the relationship between a mean and maximum velocity and estimates an equilibrium state ${\phi}(M)$ well presenting properties of a river cross section as the results. The mean velocity was estimated by using the equilibrium state ${\phi}(M)$, and then the discharge was estimated. To prove this equation to be accurate, the comparison between the measured and estimated discharge is conducted by using the measured laboratory data in the unsteady condition flow showing loop state and the results are consistent. If this study is constantly carried out by using various laboratory and river data, this method will be widely utilized in water resources field.
The lime-soil mixture on barrier (LSMB) tomb is a representative type of tomb from the Joseon Dynasty. It is an important reference for understanding the society and funeral culture of that time. The LSMB excavated at the Gungri site were classified with manufacturing type. The ultrasonic velocity and rebound hardness method were used to estimate the physical properties of the LSMB. The strength values on the tomb of layered wall were different depend on measuring method. The compressive strengths of the tomb with layered wall, which is calculated by ultrasonic velocity and rebound hardness ranged from 4.0 to 355 (mean 43.6) $kgf/cm^2$ and 18.8 to 538 (mean 245.2) $kgf/cm^2$ ranges. The damage to the tomb with integrated wall during excavation and removal of the corpse could be a reason for the difference in results obtained using ultrasonic velocity method. Compressive strengths of tombs with integrated wall, which is calculated by ultrasonic velocity and rebound hardness ranged from 5.7 to 793 (mean 281.6) $kgf/cm^2$ and 4.5 to 550.5 (mean 172.4) $kgf/cm^2$ values. Physical properties on the tombs of integrated wall had different in compressive strength value but showed similar tendency. Thus, evaluation of the physical properties has shown that measuring ultrasonic velocity and rebound hardness methods are more effective in the LSMB with integrated walls. Further, the strength values obtained through the rebound hardness method are more constant than those obtained through the ultrasonic method due to the small detection area required by the former.
