Shear wave velocities of three selected sandy soils subject to drained triaxial compression test were continuously measured using the bender elements. The shear wave velocity during isotropic compression, as widely recognized, increased as confining pressure increased and they were correlated well. However, during drained shearing, the mean effective stress could no further provide a suitable correlation. The shear wave velocity during this stage was almost constant with respect to the mean effective stress. The vertical stress was found to be more favorable at this stage (since confining stress was kept constant). When sample was attained its peak stress, the shear wave velocity reduced and deviated from the previously existed trend line. This was probably caused by the non-uniformity induced by the formation of shear band. Subsequently, void ratios computed based on external measurements could not provide reasonable fitting to the initial stage of post-peak shear wave velocity. At very large strain levels after shear band formation, the digital images revealed that sample may internally re-arrange itself to be in a more uniform loose stage. This final stage void ratio estimated based on the proposed correlation derived during pre-peak state was close to the value of the maximum void ratio.
The phase-averaged velocity fields of 3 dimensional turbulent wake behind a marine propeller measured by 2D PIV and stereoscopic PIV(SPIV) were compared directly. In-plane velocity fields obtained from the consecutive particle images captured by one camera in 2D PIV have perspective errors due to out-of-plane motion. However, the perspective errors can be removed by measuring three component velocity fields using SPIV method with two cameras. It is also necessary to measure three components velocity fields for the investigation of complicated near-wake behind the propeller for the suitable propeller design. 400 instantaneous velocity fields were measured for each of four different blade phases of $0^{\circ},\;18^{\circ},\;36^{\circ}C\;and\;54^{\circ}$. They were ensemble averaged to investigate the spatial evolution of the propeller wake in the downstream region. The phase-averaged velocity fields show the viscous wake developed along the blade surfaces and tip vortices were formed periodically. The perspective errors caused by the out-of-plane motion was estimated by the comparison of 2D PIV and SPIV results. The difference in the axial mean velocity fields measured by both techniques are nearly proportional to the mean out-of-plane velocity component which has large values in the regions of the tip and trailing vortices. The axial turbulence intensity measured by 2D PIV was overestimated since the out-of-plane velocity fluctuations influence the in-plane velocity vectors and increase the in-plane turbulence intensities.

Flows in the combustion chamber near the spark plug are measured using LDv.A single cylinder DOHC S.I. engine of compression ratio 9.5:1 with a transparent quartz window piston is used. Combustion chamber shape is semi-wedge type. Measured data are analyzed using the ensemble averaged analysis and the cycle resolved analysis which uses FFT Filtering. Turbulent intensity and mean velocity are studied in the main flow direction and the normal to main flow direction as a function of engine speeds. The results shows that the turbulent intensity obtained by the ensemble averaged analysis is greater than that calculated by the cycle resolved analysis. Especially, the ensemble averaged analysis shows increase in turbulence at the end of compression stroke although the cycle resolved analysis shows increase only in the cycle-by-cycle variation with no noticeable increase in turbulence. The mean velocity in the main flow direction increase as engine speed increase. But the mean velocity normal to the main flow does not show such increase. Turbulent intensity in both direction increase in proportion to engine speeds. The magnitude of turbulent intensity is about 0.3 ~ 0.4 times the mean piston speeds at the end of the compression stroke.
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of high-heeled shoe on the quiet standing and gait balance. Twenty women (mean height: $161.6{\pm}3.3\;cm$, mean body mass: $53.8{\pm}6.3\;kg$, mean age: $23.8{\pm}2.7$ yrs..) who were without history or complain of lower limb pain took part in this study. They were asked to stand quietly on a force platform for 30 sec and walk on it at their preferred walking speed (mean speed $3.14{\pm}0.5\;km/hr$.) with wearing three different high-heeled shoe, 3, 7, 9 cm high for collecting data. Data were randomly recorded to collect two trials for quiet standing and five trials for walking The parameters to have been analyzed for comparison between three conditions of the height of high-heeled shoe were COP(Center of Pressure) range, COP velocity, sway area, and free moment on the static balance and COP range, COP velocity, and free moment on the dynamic balance. In this study, high-heel height affected on the COP range and velocity in the ante-posterior direction during walking, dynamic balance, but didn't affect on the quiet standing, static balance.
A method is presented which enables easily the computation of the suspended sediment discharge as the mean sediment concentration and mean flow velocity. This method has significant advantages over the traditional method, which principally depend on a set of measured concentration data. The method is based on both a new sediment concentration and mean sediment concentration equations which have been derived from the entropy concept used in statistical mechanics and information theory: (1) The sediment concentration distribution equations derived, are capable of describing the variation of the concentration in the vertical direction. (2) The mean concentration equation derived, is capable of calculating easily the mean concentration by using only one measured concentration in open channel. The present study mainly addresses the following two subjects : (1) new sediment concentration and mean sediment concentration equations are derived from the entropy concept : (2) An efficient and useful method of suspended sediment-discharge measurements is developed which can facilitate the estimation of suspended sediment-discharge in open channel. Flume and laboratory data are used to carry out the research task outlined above. An efficient method for determining the suspended sediment-discharge in the open channel has been developed. The method presented also is efficient and applicable in estimating the sediment transport in rivers and the sediment deposit in the reservoirs, and can drastically reduce the time and cost of sediment measurements.

Measurements of mean velocity and turbulence characteristics are obtained with a linearized constant temperature hot-wire anemometer in a two-dimensional turbulent jet discharging parallel to a flate. Wall static pressure distribution is also measure. The Reynolds number based on the jet nozzle width (D) is about 42,000 and the step height is 2.5D. The reattachment length is found to be 7.5D by using both wool tuft and oil methods. Upstream of the reattachment point, there exist double coherent structures and mean velocity, Reynolds stresses and triple product profiles are asymmetric about jet center line due to the influence of streamline curvature and recirculating flow region. Near the reattachment point, wall static pressure and turbulence quantities change its shape rapidly because of the large eddies by the solid wall. Especially, turbulence intensity has a maximum value in the reattachment regin, then decreases slowly in the redeveloping wall jet ragion. Downstream of X/D=14, a single large scale eddy structure is formed. Far downstream affer the reattachment(X/D.geq.18) mean velocity profile, the decay of maximum velocity and the variation of jet half width are nearly similar to those of plane wall jet, but the Reynolds stresses are higher than those of the latter.
Objectives : This study was performed to change of blood flow in In-Young(ST9) after treatment on chronic daily headache patients. Methods : Monitoring of TCD was examined in 10' s chronic daily headache patients before and after treatment. Mean velocity flow, systolic velocity and pulsatility index were analyzed from TCD at In-Young(ST9). The patients was laid for 20 minutes before treatment and also for treatment. Results : The results showed a significant(p<0.05: Paired T-test) decrease in mean velocity flow and systolic velocity. but there were no significant differences in pulsatility index. Conclusions : These results suggest that there were significant change on blood flow in In-young of chronic daily headache patients.
