As the industry develops and quality of life increases, the concept of leisure is also changing. Bicycling is a healthy sport for exercising while enjoying nature, facilitating the enjoyment of a healthy life. As a result, the awareness surrounding bicycles has increased, and so has the interest in lighter and more luxurious carbon bikes. The number of domestic companies producing carbon bicycles frames is nil. In this study, we analyze the frames of existing foreign brands and analyze the deformation and stress concentration area according to the load of the frame, using the finite element analysis. In addition, we set up the range of stiffness based on the content of the structural analysis, to localize the carbon bicycle frame and famous foreign products, and compare the prototype with the stiffness by using bicycle molds for track races.

In the case of columns in buildings with soft story, the concentration of stress due to the difference in stiffness can damage the columns. The irregularity of buildings including soft story requires retrofit because combined load of compression, bending, shear, and torsion acts on the structure. Concrete jacketing is advantageous in securing the strength and stiffness of existing members. However, the brittleness of concrete make it difficult to secure ductility to resist the large deformation, and the complicated construction process for integrity between the existing member and extended section reduces the constructability. In this study, two types of Steel Grid Reinforcement (SGR), which are Steel Wire Mesh (SWM) for integrity and Steel Fiber Non-Shrinkage Mortar (SFNM) for crack resistance are proposed. One reinforced concrete (RC) column with non-seismic details and two columns retrofitted with each different types of proposed method were manufactured. Seismic performance was analyzed for cyclic loading test in which a combined load of compression, bending, shear, and torsion was applied. As a result of the experiment, specimens retrofitted with proposed concrete jacketing method showed 862% of maximum load, 188% of maximum displacement and 1,324% of stiffness compared to non-retrofitted specimen.

A two-dimensional progressive failure analysis method is presented for the strength characterization of the composite joints under pin loading. The eight-nodes laminated she]1 element is utilized based on the updated Lagrangian formulation. The criteria by Yamada-Sun, Tsai-Wu, and the maximum stress are used for the failure estimation. The stiffness of failed layer is degraded by the complete unloading method. No factor depending on test is included in the finite element analysis except for the material strength and stiffness. Total 20 plate specimens with and without hole are tested to validate the finite element prediction. The Tsai-Wu failure criterion most conservatively estimates the strength of laminate, and the maximum stress criterion yields the highest strength because it does not consider the coupling of the failure modes. The strength by Yamada-Sun method neglecting the matrix failure effect are located between other two methods and shows best agreement with test result for laminate with hole.

Among common test methods of assessing structure safety for existing lightweight walls, the criteria of the quality assessment of the horizontal static load resistance has been considered ambiguous. In the current study, therefore, an experiment was conducted to figure out the standardized assessment criteria of the lightweight wall's horizontal static load resistance. Based on the findings of the experiment with gypsum board and ALC block walls, an acceptable amount of each standard and the variables of the stud wall arising from the appropriate load (1000N) on the wall in a daily life were accounted for, arbitrarily setting the maximum deformation amount below 15mm.
To reduce shrinkage and the possibility of fracture during ambient pressure drying, it is of great importance to increase the strength and stiffness of the wet gels. In this paper is presented the strengthening and stiffening of wet silica gels prepared from sodium silicate (water glass) as well as properties of the corresponding xerogels. By washing gels containing different initial silica contents in water solutions at elevated pH, a maximum in shear modulus of ~4 MPa was obtained. The maximum stiffness enabled xerogels with bulk density of 0.28g/$\textrm{cm}^3$ to be made regardless of silica content and washing conditions. However, by aging the wet gels in a solution providing fresh monomers to the gel network, a shear modulus of 20 MPa was obtained after 27h. By this method monolithic xerogels with a density down to ~0.2g/$\textrm{cm}^3$ was prepared. The results are compared to alkoxide based gels.

Most recent seismic design codes include Response Modification Factor(RMF) for determining equivalent lateral forces. The RMF is used to reduce the linear elastic design spectrum to account for the energy dissipation capacity, overstrength and damping of the structure. In this study the RMF is defined as the ratio of the absolute maximum linear elastic base shear to the absolute maximum nonlinear base shear of a structure subject to the same earthquake accelerogram. This study investigates the effect of hysteretic model, as well as target ductility ratio and natural period on duct based RMF using nonlinear dynamic analyses of the SDOF systems. Special emphasis is given to the effects of the hysteretic characteristics such as strength deterioration and stiffness degradation. Results indicate that RMFs are dependent on ductility, period and hysteretic model.

Energy dissipation capacity and earthquake responses of steel structures installed with unbonded braces(UB) were investigated. Nonlinear dynamic time history analyses were carried out to investigate the seismic response of multi-story model structures with UB having various size and strength. Various techniques were applied to determine proper story-wise distribution of UB in multi-story structures. The analysis results show that the maximum displacements of structures generally decrease as the stiffness of UB increases. However there are cases that the maximum displacement and accumulated damage increases as the stiffness of UB increases, which needs to be checked before deciding proper amount of UB.
In this study, the axial stiffness of existing piles (Kve) of vertical extension remodeled building was quantified through theoretical and experimental approaches. Theoretically induced upper and lower boundary of the pile axial stiffness was estimated by using the formula proposed by Randolph and Wroth (1978), which can estimate the axial stiffness of rigid and flexible pile subjected under soil confinement. In addition, 38 cases of field measurement data on deteriorated piles with various diameters constructed in the period between 1995 - 1997 were taken in to account by overlapping the field data with the theoretical boundary of the axial stiffness. Through this the maximum axial stiffness of existing pile due to deterioration and long service time was presented for various slenderness ratio (L/D), which can be used in estimating the necessary axial stiffness of reinforcing piles(Kvr) for the vertical extension remodeling. The lower 95% value of the estimated axial stiffness of existing pile will be induced through statistical processing.

This paper aims to develop response modification factors for stiffness degrading structures by incorporating soil-structure interaction effects. A comprehensive parametric study is conducted to investigate the effects of key SSI parameters, natural period of vibration, ductility demand and hysteretic behavior on the response modification factor of soil-structure systems. The nonlinear dynamic response of 6300 soil-structure systems are studied under two ensembles of accelograms including 20 recorded and 7 synthetic ground motions. It is concluded that neglecting the stiffness degradation of structures can results in up to 22% underestimation of inelastic strength demands in soil-structure systems, leading to an unexpected high level of ductility demand in the structures located on soft soil. Nonlinear regression analyses are then performed to derive a simplified expression for estimating ductility-dependent response modification factors for stiffness degrading soil-structure systems. The adequacy of the proposed expression is investigated through sensitivity analyses on nonlinear soil-structure systems under seven synthetic spectrum compatible earthquake ground motions. A good agreement is observed between the results of the predicted and the target ductility demands, demonstrating the adequacy of the expression proposed in this study to estimate the inelastic demands of SSI systems with stiffness degrading structures. It is observed that the maximum differences between the target and average target ductility demands was 15%, which is considered acceptable for practical design purposes.

This study was experimentally investigated on the effects of spring stiffness applied to linear compressor chambers. The springs prevented piston head from colliding with engine cover, stored the kinetic energy and regenerated the kinetic energy. The linear engine has two combustion chambers and four compressor chamber. The combustion chamber bore size was 30 mm, maximum stroke was 31 mm and effective stroke volume was 25.45 cc respectively. The spring stiffness was varied such as 0, 0.5, 1.00, 2.9 and 14.7 N/mm. The linear engine was fueled with premixed LPG (propane 99%) and air by pre-mixture device. As an experimental result, The stroke, piston velocity and the piston frequency were increased by high spring stiffness. Also, thermal efficiency was grown. because the increased stroke made the higher compression ratio. In conclusion, electric power and efficiency were improved.
