In this paper, light-emitting-diode (LED) backlight driving circuits and dimming method for medium-sized and large liquid crystal displays (LCDs) are proposed. The double loop control method, the intelligent-phase-shifted PWM dimming method, the fast-switching current regulator, and the current matching techniques are proposed to improve not only the current regulation characteristics and the power efficiency but also the current matching characteristics and the transient response of the LED current. The brightness of the backlight using the proposed local dimming method was determined from the histogram of the local block to reduce the power consumption of the backlight without image distortion. The measured maximum power efficiency of the LED backlight driving circuit for medium-sized LCDs was 90%, and the simulation results showed an 88% maximum power efficiency of the LED backlight driving circuit for large LCDs. The maximum backlight power-saving ratio of the proposed dimming method was 41.7% in the simulation with a high-contrast image. The experiment and simulation results showed that the performance of LEDs as LCD backlight units (BLUs) improved with the proposed circuits and method.
In this paper, the equivalent circuit for the efficiency calculation by precise estimation of the linkage flux, inductance and iron loss resistance was calculated accurately. In addition, the driving characteristics according to the current phase angle are analyzed and the maximum efficiency point is calculated. And then, analyzed and experimental values of the efficiency were compared. So, causes of error were expected to be vibration and noise by harmonic distortion of the voltage and current, and mechanical loss of dynamometer. In addition, the driving characteristics according to the current phase angle are analyzed and the maximum efficiency point is calculated.
To operate organic light emitting device (OLED) with alternating current (AC) power source without AC/DC(direct current) converter, we fabricated the fluorescent OLED and measured the emission characteristics with AC and DC. The OLED operated by AC showed higher maximum current efficiency of 8.2 cd/A and maximum power efficiency of 8.3 lm/W. But current efficiency and power efficiency of AC driven OLED showed worse than DC driven OLED at high voltage above 10 V. This result can be explained by the peak voltage of AC was $\sqrt{2}$ times than DC, In case of low driving voltage the emission characteristics were improved by the peak voltage of AC, but in case of high driving voltage the emission efficiencies were decreased by the roll off phenomena. Finally, serial OLED arrays using twelve OLEDs driven by AC 110 V showed average voltage of 9.17 V, voltage uniformity of 99.0%, average luminance of $1,175cd/m^2$, luminance uniformity of 94.4%.
In this paper, multilayer actuator structured-ultrasonic nozzle and resonant inverter driving circuit were manufactured, respectively. Its electrical properties were investigated. Multilayer actuator structured ultrasonic nozzle was fabricated using PMN-PNN-PZT ceramics showing excellent piezoelectric characteristics. In order to drive ultrasonic nozzle, resonant PWM inverter was used. The purpose of this study is to find the optimal driving condition of ultrasonic nozzle. Accordingly, electrical and temperature characteristic of multilayer ultrasonic driving system were investigated by experiments as a function of the series resonance inductance. The driving current of ultrasonic nozzle showed the maximum current of 27 mA. Also, the surface temperature of ceramic vibrator showed $44^{\circ}C$ at driving time for 20 min. The ultrasonic nozzle was stably operated in the case of driving for more than 20 min.
PURPOSES : The desire of drivers to increase their driving speeds is increasing in response to the technological advancements in vehicles and roads. Therefore, studies are being conducted to increase the maximum design speed in Korea to 140 km/h. The stopping sight distance (SSD) is an important criterion for acquiring sustained road safety in road design. Moreover, although the perception-reaction time (PRT) is a critical variable in the calculation of the SSD, there are not many current studies on PRT. Prior to increasing the design speed, it is necessary to confirm whether the domestic PRT standard (2.5 s) is applicable to high-speed driving. Thus, in this study, we have investigated the influence of high-speed driving on PRT. METHODS : A driving simulator was used to record the PRT of drivers. A virtual driving map was composed using UC-Win/Road software. Experiments were carried out at speeds of 100, 120, and 140 km/h while assuming the following three driving scenarios according to driver expectation: Expected, Unexpected, and Surprised. Lastly, we analyzed the gaze position of the driver as they drove in the simulated environment using Smarteye. RESULTS : Driving simulator experimental results showed that the PRT of drivers decreased as driving speed increased from 100 km/h to 140 km/h. Furthermore, the gaze position analysis results demonstrated that the decrease in PRT of drivers as the driving speed increased was directly related to their level of concentration. CONCLUSIONS : In the experimental results, 85% of drivers responded within 2.0 s at a driving speed of 140 km/h. Thus, the results obtained here verify that the current domestic standard of 2.5 s can be applied in the highways designated to have 140 km/h maximum speed.
We have developed inverted green phosphorescent organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) using 1,1-bis[(di-4-tolylamino)phenyl]cyclohexane (TAPC) and bis(carbazole-9-yl)biphenyl (CBP) hole transport layers. The driving voltage, current efficiency, power efficiency, and emission characteristics of devices were investigated. While the driving voltage for the same current density was about 1~2 V lower in the devices with the TAPC layer, the maximum luminance was higher in the device with the CBP layer. The maximum current efficiency and power efficiency were 3.2 and 2.7 times higher in the device with the CBP layer, respectively. The higher efficiency in the CBP device resulted from the enhanced hole-electron balance although weak parasitic recombination takes place in the CBP hole transport layer.
This paper suggests the algorithm for on-line efficiency control of permancent magnet synchronous motors driving the electric vehicles. The existance of unigue d-axis current is verified, which generates the maximum efficiency at operating points of motor. Using the Fibonacci search method, d-axis current converges to the minimization of inverter input power, and to prevent the variation of motor speed in process of the efficiency control, the voltage decoupled control strategy is introduced. Through the experiments, the effects of an efficiency control algorithm are verified.
We proposed a design method for constant current pyro squib circuit. The current method using N MOSFET for the stability problem has a weakness of the current change, requiring a new design. This paper identified the problem with conventional squib circuit where the current is reduced by 25 % when maximum resistance is 3 ohms. Thus, we proposed a stable constant current driving circuit using P MOSFET and PNP BJT. We confirmed stable constant circuit operation through simulations and measurements of the proposed circuit design where the current did not change until the resistance reached 3 ohms.
This paper presents a novel low power driving circuit for passive matrix organic lighting emitting diodes (OLED) displays. The proposed driving method for a low power OLED driving circuit which reduce large parasitic capacitance in OLED panel only use current driving method, instead of mixed mode driving method which uses voltage pre-charge technique. The driving circuit is implemented to one chip using 0.35${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ CMOS process with 18V high voltage devices and it is applicable to 96(R.G.B)X64, 65K color OLED displays for mobile phone application. The maximum switching power dissipation of driving power dissipation is 5.7mW and it is 4% of that of the conventional driving circuit.
