In this paper, a variable length block code for real time compression and decompression of hanguel and chinese character bit map font is proposed. The proposed code shows a good compression ratio in complete form of hangeul myoungjo and godik style and chinese batang and doddum style bit map font. Besides, a compression and decompression ASIC is designed and simulated on CAD. The 0.8 micron CMOS sea of gate is used to implement the ASIC in amount of 5,200 gates, and it runs at simple hardware and compress and decompress at 33M bit/sec at maximum, which is ideal for real time applications.
Objectives : The correction of clinical and radiologic abnormalities in patients with symptomatic ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) is the current mainstay of treatment. This study aimed to identify radiographic predictors of severity of myelopathy in patients with symptomatic OPLL. Methods : Fifty patients with symptomatic cervical OPLL were enrolled. Based on Japanese Orthopedic Association (JOA) scores, patients were divided into either the mild myelopathy (n=31) or severe myelopathy (n=19) group. All subjects underwent preoperative plain cervical roentgenogram, computed tomography (CT), and MR imaging (MRI). Radiological parameters (C2-7 sagittal vertical axis, SVA; C2-7 Cobb angle; C2-7 range of motion, ROM; OPLL occupying ratio; and compression angle) were compared. Compression angle of OPLL was defined as the angle between the cranial and caudal surfaces of OPLL at the maximum level of cord compression Results : The occupying ratio of the spinal canal, C2-7 Cobb angle, C2-7 SVA, types of OPLL, and C2-7 ROM of the cervical spine were not statistically different between the two groups. However, the OPLL compression angle was significantly greater (p=0.003) in the severe myelopathy group than in the mild myelopathy group and was inversely correlated with JOA score (r=-0.533, p<0.01). Furthermore, multivariate regression analysis demonstrated that the compression angle (B=-0.069, p<0.001) was significantly associated with JOA scores (R=0.647, p<0.005). Conclusion : Higher compression angles of OPLL have deleterious effects on the spinal cord and decrease preoperative JOA scores.

Turbulence intensity caused by piston movement was almost as same tendency as the piston speed. The turbulence intensity was increased from 0.39m/s to 0.79m/s when mean piston speed increased from 2.33m/s to 4.67m/s. In this case the maximum turbulence intensity caused by piston speed was decreased about 82 percent near the top dead center at the end of compression stroke. The maximum turbulence intensity was created from 12m/s to 22m/s when inlet flow velocity was increased from 22m/s to 45m/s. Also turbulence intensity caused by inlet flow velocity was linearly increased from 0.97m/s at top dead center at the end of compression stroke. The ratio of turbulence intensity and mean inlet flow velocity was about 3 percent for inlet flow velocity.
The use of sand-tire chip mixtures in construction industry is a sustainable and environmentally friendly approach that addresses both waste tire disposal and soil improvement needs. However, the addition of tire chip particles to natural soils decreases maximum shear modulus (Gmax), but increases compressibility, which can be potential drawbacks. This study examines the effect of overconsolidation stress history on the maximum shear modulus (Gmax) of rigid-soft mixtures with varying size ratios (SR) and tire chip contents (TC) by measuring the wave velocity through a 1-D compression test during loading and unloading. The results demonstrate that the Gmax of tested mixtures in the normally consolidated state increased with increasing SR and decreasing TC. However, the tested mixtures with a smaller SR exhibited a greater increase in Gmax during unloading because of the active pore-filling behavior of the smaller rubber particles and the consequent increased connectivity between sand particles. The SR-dependent impact of the overconsolidation stress history on Gmax was verified using the ratio between the swelling and compression indices. Most importantly, this study reveals that the excessive settlement and lower Gmax of rigid-soft mixtures can be overcome by introducing an overconsolidated state in sand-tire chip mixtures with low TC.
Seismic design of reinforced concrete (RC) structures requires a certain minimum level of flexural ductility. For example, Eurocode EN1998-1 directly specifies a minimum flexural ductility for RC beams, while Chinese code GB50011 limits the equivalent rectangular stress block depth ratio at peak resisting moment to achieve a certain nominal minimum flexural ductility indirectly. Although confinement is effective in improving the ductility of RC beams, most design codes do not provide any guidelines due to the lack of a suitable theory. In this study, the confinement for desirable flexural ductility performance of both normal- and high-strength concrete beams is evaluated based on a rigorous full-range moment-curvature analysis. An effective strategy is proposed for flexural ductility design of RC beams taking into account confinement. The key parameters considered include the maximum difference of tension and compression reinforcement ratios, and maximum neutral axis depth ratio at peak resisting moment. Empirical formulae and tables are then developed to provide guidelines accordingly.
The near-collapse performance limit is defined as the deformation at the 20% drop of maximum base shear in the decreasing region of the pushover curve for ductile framed buildings. Although monotonic pushover analysis is preferred due to the simple application procedure, this analysis gives rise to overestimated results by neglecting the cumulative damage effects. In the present study, the acceptabilities of monotonic and cyclic pushover analysis results for the near-collapse performance limit state are determined by comparing with Incremental Dynamic Analysis (IDA) results for a 5-story Reinforced Concrete framed building. IDA is performed to obtain the collapse point, and the near-collapse drift ratios for monotonic and cyclic pushover analysis methods are obtained separately. These two alternative drift ratios are compared with the collapse drift ratio. The correlations of the maximum tensile and compression strain at the base columns and beam plastic rotations with interstory drift ratios are acquired using the nonlinear time history analysis results by the simple linear regression analyses. It is seen that these parameters are highly correlated with the interstory drift ratios, and the results reveal that the near-collapse point acquired by monotonic pushover analysis causes unacceptably high tensile and compression strains at the base columns, as well as large plastic rotations at the beams. However, it is shown that the results of cyclic pushover analysis are acceptable for the near-collapse performance limit state.
Purpose: Sonographic elastography can be used to evaluate the hardness of muscle tissue through the application of compression. Strain elastography gauges hardness through the comparison of echo sets before and after compression. This study utilized ultrasonography to measure the thickness and hardness of the masseter muscle in individuals with temporomandibular joint(TMJ) osteoarthritis. Materials and Methods: This study included 40 patients who presented with joint pain and were diagnosed with TMJ osteoarthritis via diagnostic cone-beam computed tomography, along with 40 healthy individuals. The thickness and hardness of each individual's masseter muscle were evaluated both at rest and at maximum bite using ultrasonography. The Mann-Whitney U test and the chi-square test were employed for statistical analysis, with the significance level set at P<0.05. Results: The mean thickness of the resting masseter muscle was 0.91 cm in patients with osteoarthritis, versus 1.00 cm in healthy individuals. The mean thickness of the masseter muscle at maximum bite was 1.28 cm in osteoarthritis patients and 1.36 cm in healthy individuals. The mean masseter elasticity index ratio at maximum bite was 4.51 in patients with osteoarthritis and 3.16 in healthy controls. Significant differences were observed between patients with osteoarthritis and healthy controls in both the masseter muscle thickness and the masseter elasticity index ratio, at rest and at maximum bite (P<0.05). Conclusion: The thickness of the masseter muscle in patients with TMJ osteoarthritis was less than that in healthy controls. Additionally, the hardness of the masseter muscle was greater in patients with TMJ osteoarthritis.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the mechanical characteristics of plain and steel fiber high strength concrete under uniaxial and biaxial loading condition. A number of plain and steel fiber high strength concrete cubes having 28 days compressive strength of 82.7Mpa (12,000psi) were made and tested. Four principal compression stress ratios, and four fiber concentrations were selected as major test variables. From test results, it is shown that confinement stress in minor stress direction has pronounced effect on the strength and deformational behavior. Both of the stiffness and ultimate strength of the plain and fiber high strength concrete increased. The maximum increase of ultimate strength occurred at biaxial stress ratio of 0.5 in the plain high strength concrete and the value were recorded 30 percent over than the strength under uniaxial condition. The failure modes of plain high strength concrete under uniaxial compression were shown as splitting type of failure but steel fiber concrete specimens under biaxial condition showed shear type failure.

The performance of a turbomolecular pump(TMP) in both molecular and transition flow regions is predicted by the numerical solutions of the Boltzmann equation obtained by the direct simulation Monte Carlo method. The compression characteristics of the TMP are investigated for a wide range of the Knudsen number( Kn ). The maximum compression ratios strongly depend on Kn in transition region, while do they weakly on Kn in free molecular flow region. The present numerical results of the single blade row in both molecular and transition regions are used to predict the overall performance of a TMP, which has three kinds of blade with 24-rows.

This study has been performed to investigate the physical and mechanical characteristics of compaction, volume change and compressive strength for reinforced soil mixed with polypropylene fiber, and to confirm the reinforcing effects with admixture such as polypropylene fiber. To this end, a series of compaction test and compression test was conducted for clayey soil(CL) and polypropylene fiber reinforced soil. In order to determine proper moisture contents and mixing ratio, pilot test was carried out for natural soil and PFRS(polypropylene fiber reinforced soil). And the mixing ratio of mono-filament fiber and fibrillated polypropylene fiber admixture was 0.1%, 0.3%, 0.5% and 1.0% by the weight of dry soil. From the experimental results, it was found that the optimum moisture contents(OMC) increased with the mixing ratio of fiber, but the maximum dry unit weight and the volume change was decreased with the mixing ratio. It means that the improvement of the workability and the reduction of the weight of embankment was done by the addition of the polypropylene fiber. And, from the compression test results, it was found that the addition of the polypropylene fiber remarkably improved the compressive strength of PFRS. And it was observed in the viewpoint of strength that the fibrillated polypropylene fiber reinforced soil was more effective than the mono-filament polypropylene fiber reinforced soil.
