  • We searched for X-ray emission from the 665 galaxies inside and towards the nearby voids by analyzing the ROSAT All-Sky Survey (RASS) data as well as the ROSAT pointed observations (PSPC). As a result we have detected six X-ray emitting galaxies. Two (UGC 10205 and NGC 7509) are in the high density region in the local void, three (UGC 749, MCG +11-10-073, and Mrk 464) are towards the nearby voids, and UGC 32 is located in the low density region. We carried out a timing analysis for both Mrk 464 and UGC 32, and a spectral analysis for Mrk 464. The light curve of Mrk 464 shows the possibility of periodic X-ray flux variation and UGC 32 shows weak, but rapid variation.

  • Microlensing is generally thought to probe planetary systems only out to a few Einstein radii. Microlensing events generated by bound planets beyond about 10 Einstein radii generally do not yield any trace of their hosts, and so would be classified as free floating planets (FFPs). I show that it is already possible, using adaptive optics (AO), to constrain the presence of potential hosts to FFP candidates at separations comparable to the Oort Cloud. With next-generation telescopes, planets at Kuiper-Belt separations can be probed. Next generation telescopes will also permit routine vetting for all FFP candidates, simply by obtaining second epochs 4-8 years after the event. At present, the search for such hosts is restricted to within the "confusion limit" of θconfus ∼ 0.25′′, but future WFIRST (Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope) observations will allow one to probe beyond this confusion limit as well.

  • Atom probe tomography (APT) has been fast rising in prominence over the past decade as a key tool for nanoscale analytical characterization of a range of materials systems. APT provides three-dimensional mapping of the atom distribution in a small volume of solid material. The technique has evolved, with the incorporation of laser pulsing capabilities, and, combined with progress in specimen preparation, APT is now able to analyse a very range of materials, beyond metals and alloys that used to be its core applications. The present article aims to provide an overview of the technique, providing a brief historical perspective, discussing recent progress leading to the state-of-the-art, some perspectives on its evolution, with targeted examples of applications.

  • Non-alloyed and 1.0%Ni alloyed ductile cast iron were cast into the sand mold and metal mold, and finer graphite size was obtained in case of metal mold casting. Direct tempering after casting showed the slight increase of absorbed energy, which is largely due to the relieving of residual stress that is developed during casting. After austempering heat treatment, higher impact energy was obtained in case of metal mold casting than sand mold casting, which is due to the finer graphite size.

  • We investigate the electrical and thermal transport properties of a sesquicarbide superconductor $La_2C_3$, including electrical resistivity, thermoelectric power, and thermal conductivity. The electrical resistivity exhibits a typical metallic character with a saturation behavior at high temperatures. The thermoelectric power shows a metallic behavior with pronounced phonon-drag effect, comparable with pure metals. The broad peak of the thermal conductivity is observed in the superconducting state, which is rapidly suppressed by magnetic fields. These observations suggest that the electron-phonon scattering is significant in $La_2C_3$, which is relevant with the relatively high-$T_c$ in $La_2C_3$ through strong electron-phonon coupling with low frequency phonon modes.

  • The magnetic field at the surface of the Sun is concentrated in magnetic features that often have spatial extents of 100 km or less. The study of the fine scale structure of the Sun's magnetic field has been hampered by the limited spatial resolution of the available observations. This has recently changed thanks to various new high-resolution facilities, among them the SUNRISE observatory, built around the largest solar telescope to leave the ground, and containing two science instruments. SUNRISE successfully had its first long-duration science flight on a stratospheric balloon in June 2009 and a host of scientific results have been obtained from the data. After a brief introduction to the Sunrise mission, an overview of selected results obtained so far will be given. A reflight at higher solar activity is currently being prepared.

  • The most powerful technique for deducing the magnetic structure of the Sun is spectro-polarimetry. Detailed measurements of the polarization signal of the spectral lines (Stokes vector) allow us to infer the physical conditions in the solar atmosphere prevailing during the line formation. Inversion codes are the main tool to extract this information from the Stokes spectra. This study will focus on measurements of the chromospheric He I 1083.0 nm triplet and the photospheric Si I 1082.7 nm line. A spectropolarimetric data set of sunspots, obtained with the German Vacuum Tower Telescope (VTT) at the Teide observatory on Tenerife, is analyzed using an inversion technique. We will introduce the German Vacuum Tower Telescope and the inversion code HeLix, and will show data sets that are analyzed by HeLix.

  • Phase equilibria in the system Si3N4-TiC-TiCxN1-x-C-N were determined by thermodynamic calculations (CALPHAD-method). The reaction peaction paths for Si3N4-TiC and SiC-TiC composites in the Ti-Si-C-n system were simulated at I bar N2-pressure and varying terpreatures. At a temperature of 1923 K two tie-triangles (TiC0.34N0.66+SiC+C and TiC0.13N0.87+SiC+Si3N4) and two 2-phase fieds (TiCxN1-x+SiC; 0.13

  • Although it was recently observed that severe fatigue damage was formed in Al or Cu interconnects due to the cyclic temperatures generated by Joule heating of the metal lines by the passage of alternating currents (AC), AC loading frequency effect on the damage evolution characteristics are not known so far. This work focused on the effect of AC loading frequency (100 Hz vs. 10 kHz) on the thermo-mechanical fatigue characteristics by using polycrystalline sputtered Cu lines with temperature cycles with amplitudes from 100 to $300^{\circ}C$. It was consistently observed that higher loading frequency accelerated damaged grain growth and led to earlier failure irrespective of Cu grain sizes. The frequency effect is believed to result from differences in the concentration of defects created by the deformation-induced motion of dislocations to the grain boundaries.
