  • Input filters are very important to matrix converters (MCs). They are used to improve grid side current waveform quality and to reduce the input voltage distortion supplied to the grid side. Due to the effects of the input filter and the output power, the grid side power factor (PF) is not at unity when the input power factor angle is zero. In this paper, the displacement angle between the grid side phase current and the phase voltage affected by the input filter parameters and output power is analyzed. Based on this, a new grid side PF unity compensation method implemented in the indirect space vector pulse width modulation (ISVPWM) method is presented, which has a larger compensation angle than the traditional compensation method, showing a higher grid side PF at unity in a wide output power range. Simulation and experimental results verify that the analysis of the displacement angle between the grid side phase current and the phase voltage affected by the input filter and output power is right and that the proposed compensation method has a better grid side PF at unity.

  • This paper analyzes the input side performance of a conventional three-phase to single-phase matrix converter (3-1MC). It also presents the input-side waveform quality under this topology. The suppression of low-frequency input current harmonics is studied using the 3-1MC plus capacitance compensation unit. The constraint between the modulation function of the output and compensation sides is analyzed, and the relations among the voltage utilization ratio and the output compensation capacitance, filter capacitors and other system parameters are deduced. For a 3-1MC without large-capacity energy storage, the system performance is susceptible to input voltage imbalance. This paper decouples the inner current of the 3-1MC using a Lyapunov function in the input positive and negative sequence bi-coordinate axes. Meanwhile, the outer loop adopts a voltage-weighted synthesis of the output and compensation sides as a cascade of control objects. Experiments show that this strategy suppresses the low-frequency input current harmonics caused by input voltage imbalance, and ensures that the system maintains good static and dynamic performances under input-unbalanced conditions. At the same time, the parameter selection and debugging methods are simple.

  • Due to high specific strength and low density, AZ series magnesium alloys have been receiving high interest as a lightweight material. However, their industrial application is limited due to the phenomenon that the strength decreases at elevated temperature by the occurrence of softening effect because of the Mg17Al12 phase decomposition. To solve this problem, many research were conducted to increase the high-temperature strength by forming a thermal stable second-phase component by adding new elements to the AZ magnesium. Especially, adding Ca to AZ magnesium has been reported that Ca forms the new second-phase. However, studies about the analysis of decomposition or precipitation temperature, formation composition, and components to understand the formation behavior of these precipitated phases are still insufficient. Therefore, the effect of Ca addition to AZ61 on the phase change and microstructure of the alloy during annealing was investigated. As a result of analysis of the initial and heat-treated specimen, AZ61 formed α-Mg matrix and precipitated phase of Mg17Al12, and AZX611 formed one more type of precipitated phase, Al2Ca. Also, Al2Ca was thermal stable at high temperatures. And after annealing, the laves phase was decomposed to under 10 ㎛ size and distributed in matrix.

  • We Propose the methods to design the finite impulse response (FIR) and the infinite impulse response (IIR) lattice filters using Schur algorithm through the spectral factorization of the covariance matrix by circulant matrix factorization (CMF). Circulant matrix factorization is also very powerful tool used for spectral factorization of the covariance polynomial in matrix domain to obtain the minimum phase polynomial without the polynomial root finding problem. Schur algorithm is the method for a fast Cholesky factorization of Toeplitz matrix, which easily determines the lattice filter parameters. Examples for the case of the FIR filter and for the case of the In filter are included, and performance of our method check by comparing of our method and another methods (polynomial root finding and cepstral deconvolution).

  • Parallel optical arithmetic techniques have been developed using the correlation property of optical phase conjugate wave generated by degenerated four wave-mixing. In this paper, conventional rectangular-type coded pattern used for optical logic system is replaced by circular one for effective beam coupling in a photorefractive $BaTiO_3$ material. By adequately adjusting the distance between circular-type pixels of the input pattern and grouping the correlated output, optical binary half addition/subtraction, binary multiplication and, matrix-matrix computation are demonstrated.

  • We numerically investigated propagation of various waves in the two-phase flows such as sound wave, shock wave, rarefaction wave, and contact discontinuity in terms of pressure, void fraction, velocity and density of the two phases. The waves have been generated by a hydrodynamic shock tube, a pair of symmetric impulsive expansion, impulsive pressure and impulsive void waves. The six compressible two-fluid two-phase conservation laws with interfacial friction terms have been solved in two fractional steps. The first PDE Operator is solved by the HLL scheme and the second Source Operator by the semi-implicit stiff ODE solver. In the HLL scheme, the fastest wave speeds were estimated by the analytic eigenvalues of an approximate Jacobian matrix. We have discussed how the interfacial friction terms affect the wave structures in the numerical solution.

  • Surface plasmon resonance(SPR) has been widely studied for biological and chemical sensing applications. The present study conducts numerical simulation for the single and bimetallic layer SPR configurations by using the multiple beam interference matrix(MBIM) method to investigate the influence of wave interference and complex refractive indices of materials on optical characteristics such as reflectance and optical phase shift which are used for sensing. First, calculated reflectances are compared with experimental data for validation. In addition, in the single film structures this study finds out the appropriate film thicknesses with minimum reflectance for cases of gold film and silver film. For a bimetallic silver-gold film structure, in particular, the bimetallic film thicknesses that has the minimum reflectance are found 36 nm for silver and 5 nm for gold. From the results, the use of phase shift would be useful compared to reflectance in determining the SPR configuration because the phase shift becomes more sensitive than reflectance.

  • Liquid crystal-polymer composite(LCPC) films consisting of a continuous LC phase embedded in a three-dimensional network of polymer matrix are formed by photopolymerization-induced phase separ on. The LCPC films are switched from a light-scattering stats to a highly transparent stats on the application of electric fields. Since the alignment of LC molecular determines the electro-optical properties of films, the requirement for good contrast is to generate the nematic phase at high concentration. On the other hand, the concentration of UV-curable monomer must be increased above some critical value to from the flexible matrix of unbounded polymer. The mixing ratio of LC and UV-curable monomer affects the electro-optical and viscoelastic properties of LCPD films in two opposing ways. By controlling the phase separation process, at an LC fraction of 0.7, the maximum performance of LCPC films has been achieved, the response time of which is 2ms on the application of electric fields.

  • Change in damping capacity with strain amplitude was studied in Mg-Al-Si alloy in as-cast, solution-treated and aged states, respectively. The as-cast microstructure of the alloy is characterized by eutectic ${\beta}$($Mg_{17}Al_{12}$) phase and Chinese script type $Mg_2Si$ particles. The solution treatment dissolved the ${\beta}$ phase into the matrix, while the aging treatment resulted in the distribution of continuous and discontinuous type ${\beta}$ precipitates. The solution-treated microstructure showed better damping capacity than as-cast and aged microstructures both in strain-dependent and strain-independent damping regions. The decrease in second-phase particles which weakens the strong pinning points on dislocations and distribution of solute atoms in the matrix, would be responsible for the enhanced damping capacity after solution treatment.

  • Rheological behavior of thermoset/thermoplastic blends of epoxy/polyethersulphone (PES) was monitored during curing of the epoxy resin. During the isothermal curing of the mixture, a fluctuation in viscosity just before the abrupt viscosity increase was observed. This fluctuation is found to be due to the phase separation of PES from the matrix epoxy resin during the curing. The experimentally observed viscosity fluctuation is simulated with a simple two phase suspension model in terms of the increase in domain size. The viscosity profiles obtained experimentally at different isothermal curing temperatures are in good agreement with the predictions from the simple model taking into account the viscosity change due to the growth of PES domain and the network formation of the epoxy matrix.
