While the matrix converter has many advantages that include bi-directional power flow, a size reduction, a long lifetime, and sinusoidal input currents, it is vulnerable to the input voltage disturbances, because it directly exchanges the input voltage to the output voltage. So, in this paper, a critical evaluation of the effect of various abnormal voltage conditions like unbalanced power supply, balanced non-sinusoidal power supply, input voltage sags and short time blackout of power supply on matrix converter fed induction motor drives is presented. The operation under various abnormal conditions has been analyzed. For this, a 230V, 250VA three phase to three phase matrix converter (MC) fed induction motor drive prototype is implemented using DSP based controller and tests have been carried out to evaluate and improve the stability of system under typical abnormal conditions. Digital storage oscilloscope & power quality analyzer are used for experimental observations.

Application of matrix converter to vector control of induction motor using simplified Venturini algorithm which is capable of achieving the maximum output voltage is developed. This algorithm simplifies the control algorithm and therefor reduces the digital implementation time. Matrix converter is used as voltage-referenced voltage fed vector controlled induction motor drive. This paper describes the performance of vector controlled induction motor with four quadrant capability employing a matrix converter power circuit. The advantage of this system over the conventional rectifier-inverter arrangement are capability for regeneration into the utility, sinusoidal supply currents and minimum passive components. The steady-state and transient performance of the induction motor drive under the vector control technique is demonstrate with simulation and experiment results.

This paper presents a new and simple method for sensorless operation of matrix converter drives using a constant air-gap flux and the imaginary power flowing to the motor. To improve low-speed sensorless performance, the non-linearities of a matrix converter drive such as commutation delays, turn-on and turn-off times of switching devices, and on-state switching device voltage drop are modelled using PQR transformation and compensated using a reference power control scheme. The proposed compensation method is applied for high performance induction motor drives using a 3 kW matrix converter system. Experimental results are shown to illustrate the feasibility of the proposed strategy.

A matrix converter is used for converting AC/AC power directly. In order to generate sinusoidal input/output waveform in matrix converter, it uses nine bidirectional switches and PWM modulation. This paper presents an analytical averaged loss model of matrix converter with DDPWM(direct duty ratio PWM) and proposes a new switching method for reducing switching losses. A Mathematical loss models with average magnitude of voltage/current are classed as conduction and switching loss. The proposed switching pattern is improved with existing DDPWM. To prove improved efficiency with proposed DDPWM, this paper compares losses between suggested switching pattern and conventional switching pattern using mathematical and simulation method. Each loss types are influenced by environmental factors such as temperature, switching frequency, output current and modulation method.

By using simulation, compensating characteristics of a voltage sag compensator utilizing single-phase matrix converter is examined. System configuration is described and mathematical model of single-phase matrix converter is derived by using the state space averaging method. In addition, the single-phase matrix converter is stabilized by phase-lead compensation. Finally, compensating characteristics of the compensator is investigated for 500 W R-L load and it is demonstrated that the compensator can operate correctly for loads for the range of power factor 0.6 (lagging) - 0.8 (leading) and for up to 50% voltage sag.
Matrix converter is direct power conversion system. Matrix converter has many merits that possible bidirectional power flow, input power factor own control and system without DC-link. But matrix converter has some demerits that need many switching devices and switching loss. This paper suggest optimal matrix converter control scheme for improvement for switching loss part. Proposed control scheme verified that 10% improvement in efficiency, input current's harmonic loss and output voltage's EMI improvement.

This paper presents a new sensorless vector control system for high performance induction motor drives fed by a matrix converter with non-linearity compensation and disturbance observer. The nonlinear voltage distortion that is caused by commutation delay and on-state voltage drop in switching device is corrected by a new matrix converter modeling. The lumped disturbances such as parameter variation and load disturbance of the system are estimated by the radial basis function network (RBFN). An adaptive observer is also employed to bring better responses at the low speed operation. Experimental results are shown to illustrate the performance of the proposed system.
This paper presents a systematic investigation of the fault-mode behaviors of matrix converter systems. Knowledge about converter behaviors after fault occurrence is important from the standpoint of reliable system design, protection and fault-tolerant control. Converter behaviors have been, in detail, examined with both qualitative and quantitative approaches for key fault types, such as switch open-circuited faults and switch short-circuited faults. Investigating the fault-mode behaviors of matrix converters reveals that converter operation with switch short-circuited faults leads to overvoltage stresses as well as overcurrent stresses on other healthy switching components. On the other hand, switch open-circuited faults only result in overvoltage to other switching components. This study can be used to predict fault-mode converter behaviors and determine additional stresses on remaining power circuit components under fault-mode operations.

This paper presents an improved predictive control of an induction machine fed by a matrix converter using N-switching vectors as the control action during a complete sampling period of the controller. The conventional model predictive control scheme based matrix converter uses a single switching vector over the same period which introduces high torque ripple. The proposed switching scheme for a matrix converter based model predictive control of an induction machine drive selects the appropriate switching vectors for control of electromagnetic torque with small variations of the stator flux. The proposed method can reduce the ripple of the electrical variables by selecting the switching state as well as the method used in the space vector modulation techniques. Simulation results are presented to verify the effectiveness of the improved predictive control strategy for induction machine fed by a matrix converter.
This paper introduces two different types of AC current control methods for an indirect vector controlled induction motor using a matrix converter. The proposed methods combine the advantages of matrix converters with the advantages of the indirect vector AC current control methods. The first proposed method explains the basic idea of the hysteresis current control method for matrix converters and shows its capability and stability in comparison to the conventional method usually used for VSI. With the aid of the special configuration of the matrix converter, we also propose another current method which is modified from the first one in order to reduce both current ripple and torque ripple. Simulation results have verified the feasibility and the effectiveness of the proposed methods.
