  • In this paper we study the Minimum Edge Addition Problem(MEAP) to decrease the diameter of a graph. MEAP can be used for improving the serviceability of telecommunication networks with a minimum investment. MEAP is an NP-hard optimization problem. We present two mathematical programming models : One is a multi-commodity flow formulation and the other is a path partition formulation. We propose a branch-and-price algorithm to solve the path partition formulation to the optimality. We develop a polynomial time column generation sub-routine conserving the mathematical structure of a sub problem for the path partition formulation. Computational experiments show that the path partition formulation is better than the multi-commodity flow formulation. The branch-and-price algorithm can find the optimal solutions for the immediate size graphs within reasonable time.

  • This paper is concerned with a mixed Lagrangian formulation of the wiscous, stationary, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations $$ (1.1) -\nu\Delta u + (u \cdot \nabla)u + \nabla_p = f in \Omega $$ and $$ (1.2) \nubla \cdot u = 0 in \Omega $$ along with inhomogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions on a portion of the boundary $$ (1.3) u = ^{0 on \Gamma_0 _{g on \Gamma_g, $$ where $\Omega$ is a bounded open domain in $R^d, d = 2 or 3$, or with a boundary $\Gamma = \partial\Omega$, which is composed of two disjoint parts $\Gamma_0$ and $\Gamma_g$.

  • This paper compares and evaluates the performances of the two types of mathematical programming models for solving the machine-part cell formation problem in group technology manufacturing : indirect formulation relying on surrogate measure such as similarity coefficient and direct formulation seeking to minimize the number of exceptional elements. New indirect formulation, called the generalized p-median model. is proposed. Unlike existing p-median formulations, proposed formulation includes the classical cell formation problem in which only one process plan exsits for each part as a special case. The proposed new formulation can also deal with the cell formation problem in which alternative process plans exist for a part. The indirect formulation is compared with a new direct formulation which needs much fewer extra variables and constraints than existing direct formulations. Some significant findings from comparative experiment are discussed.

  • An upstream scheme based on the pseudostress-velocity mixed formulation is studied to solve convection-dominated Oseen equations. Lagrange multipliers are introduced to treat the trace-free constraint and the lowest order Raviart-Thomas finite element space on rectangular mesh is used. Error analysis for several quantities of interest is given. Particularly, first-order convergence in $L^2$ norm for the velocity is proved. Finally, numerical experiments for various cases are presented to show the efficiency of this method.

  • To generate a multicast routing tree guaranteeing the quality of service (QoS), we consider the hop constrained Steiner tree problem and propose a new mathematical formulation for it, which contains fewer constraints than a known formulation. An efficient procedure is also proposed to solve the problem. Preliminary tests show that the procedure reduces the computing time significantly.

  • The unsymmetric finite element formulation has been proposed recently to improve predictions from distorted finite elements. Studies have also shown that this special formulation using parametric functions for the test functions and metric functions for the trial functions works surprisingly well because the former satisfy the continuity conditions while the latter ensure that the stress representation during finite element computation can retrieve in a best-fit manner, the actual variation of stress in the metric space. However, a question that remained was whether the unsymmetric formulation was variationally correct. Here we determine that it is not, using the simplest possible element to amplify the principles.

  • In order to model the Group Technology Problem three formulations are used, that is, generally the following formulations are used: (1) Matrix formulation, (2) Mathematical programming formulation, (3) Graph formulation. In the case of Matrix formulation, it is difficult to discribe the situation using the multi-job machine. But this paper proposed the model of Group Technology using the multi-job machin, taking the method of making practical application of principle of similarity coefficient.

  • We are concerned with a free boundary problem for the 2D Stokes channel flows, which determines the profile of the wing for the channel, so that the given traction force is to be distributed along the wing of the channel. Using the domain embedding technique, the free boundary problem is transferred into the shape optimization problem through the compliant formulation by releasing the traction condition along the variable boundary. The justification of the formulation will be discussed.
