This study investigated various effects of WBD(web-based discussion) on mathematical communication, interaction and problem solving in the classroom. We developed a web site including BBS and chat room in order to encourage students' mathematical curiosities and self-studies. The web site had been operated for 6 months. Five classes of 1st grade students were selected from an middle school in Daejon. Moreover, we analyzed several cases for interactional behavior and effect. WBD promote dialogue between a teacher and students. Analysis of feed-back from BBS revealed that student's negative attitudes could be changed to positive ones by step-by-step discussions. Moreover, collaborative learning is enhanced by on-line discussion. But the effects of WBD are affected by the character and ability of a student.

The present study is to focus on thinking about the possibility of using mathematical modeling in the elementary schools. As well-known, mathematical education in Korea, even though students' high achievement in mathematics, has a lot of problems regarding their attitudes toward mathematics. Mathematical modeling is regarded as playing an important role in helping improve the current problems embedded in elementary mathematics education. Thus, this study reviewed the background that mathematical modeling attracted lots of attentions by many mathematics researchers, the definitions of mathematical modeling and the similarities and differences between problem solving and mathematical modeling. In addition, the processes and main features of well-known three representative models of mathematical modeling were reviewed, and each case of research on mathematical modeling in the elementary schools in Korea and foreign countries was introduced, respectively. Finally, this study suggests that mathematical modeling needs to be dealt with in the elementary school curriculum, together with the improvement of teachers' recognition for mathematical modeling.

The purpose of this study is to verify the effects of personalized learning platforms applied with machine learning recommendation modules that upgrade recommended algorithms by themselves through learning big data analysis on students' learning time, self-directed learning ability, mathematics achievement, and attitudes toward mathematics, and the correlation between them. According to the study, customized learning affected learning time, self-directed learning ability and mathematics attitude, while learning time affected self-directed learning ability. Self-directed learning ability has had a significant impact on the attitude of mathematics and mathematical achievements. As a result of the mediated effectiveness test, the indirect impact of customized learning on mathematics attitude and mathematics performance was significant through the medium of learning time and self-directed learning ability.
Mathematics educators have tried to teach mathematics to all students who are at any mathematical level by differentiated math instruction from late 1990s in Korea. The common differentiated math instruction separates students into two or three groups according to their mathematical ability and then different activities and tasks are given to each group. This kind of instruction fosters negative attitudes to mathematics to low level students and fix them at low level. So I investigated new mathematics instruction considering able students and low attainers at the same time. This new method is based on using open problems in math class. All students can respond to an open problem in different ways. If teachers could relate all varieties of answers got from students at every level to build good understanding the concept which the problem target at, low attainers could move to their potential developmental levels. This kind of instruction can change low math attainers' negative attitudes to good ones to mathematics and foster their confidence in performing mathematics.
For an appropriate assessment in mathematics, students should play an active role in their learning by becoming aware of what they have learned in mathematics and by being able to assess their attainment of mathematical knowledge. The process of actively examining and monitoring students' own progress in learning and understanding of their mathematical knowledge, process, and attitude is called self-assessment, Researchers in mathematics education have found some important facts about the meta-cognitive process which is related to self-assessment : i. e. meta-cognition progress is composed of being aware of ones' own personal thinking of content knowledge and cognitive process(self-awareness) and engagement in self-evaluation. Tipical method for self-assessment in mathematics developed upon above finding about meta-cognitive progress is describing about students' knowledge and their problem solving strategies. In the beginning of the description in mathematics about themselves, students are required to answer which part they know and which part they don't know. Self-assessment of students' attitudes and dispositions can be just as important as assessment of their specific mathematical abilities. To make the self-assessment method a success, teachers should let students' have confidence and earn their cooperation by let them overcoming fear to be known the their ability to other students. In conclusion, self-assessment encourages students to assume an active role in development of mathematical power. For teachers, student self-assessment activities can provide a prism through which the development of students' mathematical power can be viewed.
Mathematical modeling activities hold the potential for diverse applications, involving the transformation of real-life situations into mathematical models to facilitate problem-solving. In order to assess the cognitive, affective, and social dimensions of students' engagement in mathematical modeling activities, this study conducted sessions with ten groups of fifth-grade elementary school students. The ensuing processes and outcomes were thoroughly analyzed. As a result, each group effectively applied mathematical concepts and principles in creating mathematical models and gathering essential information to address real-world tasks. This led to notable shifts in interest, enhanced mathematical proficiency, and altered attitudes towards mathematics, all while promoting increased collaboration and communication among group members. Based on these analytical findings, the study offers valuable pedagogical insights and practical guidance for effectively implementing mathematical modeling activities.
This study intends to examine the characteristics of mathematical literacy on Korean Students in PISA 2003(Programme for International Student Assessment 2003). We study the mean performance, the distribution of student performance, the student performance in terms of mathematics contents and process and situation and item format, the differences in mean scores between PISA 2000 and PISA 2003, and the gender differences in student performance. In addition to, we study students' engagement with mathematics, students' beliefs about themselves, students' anxiety in mathematics, and students' teaming strategies. Finally, we discuss the reasons of the characteristics of mathematical literacy on Korean students in PISA 2003, and suggest the implications for mathematics educators and educational policy-makers.

Some 400 Secondary One (i.e. seventh-grade) students from 10 schools were provided with non-routine mathematical problems in their normal mathematics classes as exercises for one academic year. Their attitudes toward mathematics, their conceptions of mathematics and their problem-solving performance were measured both in the beginning and at the end of the year. Hierarchical regression analyses revealed that the introduction of an appropriate dose of non-routine problems would generate some effects on the students' conceptions of mathematics. A medium dose of non-routine problems (as reported by the teachers) would result in a change of the students' conception of mathematics to perceiving mathematics as less of "a subject of calculables." On the other hand, a high dose would lead students to perceive mathematics as more useful and more as a discipline involving thinking. However, with a low dose of non-routine problems, students found mathematics more "friendly" (free from fear). It is therefore proposed that the use of non-routine mathematical problems to an appropriate extent can induce changes in students' "lived space" of mathematics learning and broaden their conceptions of mathematics and mathematics learning.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the influences of discussion-based learning of mathematics using smart phone application on the middle school students' mathematics learning. For this purpose, we selected 6 open problems suitable for learning mathematical reasoning and five 3rd grade middle school students as participants who expected to participate in 6 lessons of discussion-based learning of mathematics using smart phone application. From the analysis of 6 lessons, we found the following results. First, attending the lessons of discussion-based learning of mathematics using smart phone application makes students more interested in mathematics and change their mathematics learning attitudes more positively. Second, the lessons of discussion-based learning of mathematics using smart phone application facilitate students' mathematical communication with the help of various communication methods using many functions of smart phone applications. Third, the lessons of discussion-based learning of mathematics using smart phone application provide teachers with teaching-learning environment where teachers can easily give their students consultation about mathematics learning or daily life.

The purpose of this research was to analyze the characteristics of teachers' questionings in the geometry field and suggest the characteristics of teacher questioning to enhance students' mathematical creativity. Teacher questioning plays a role to students' mathematical achievements, mathematical thinking, and their attitudes toward mathematics. However, there has been little research on the roles of teacher questioning on students' mathematical creativity. In this research, researchers analyzed teachers' questions concerning the concepts of triangles in the geometric areas of 4th grade Korean revised 2007 mathematics textbooks. We also analyzed teachers' questionings in the three lessons provided by the Jeju Educational Internet Broadcasting System. We classified and analyzed teachers' questionings by the sub-factors of creativity. The results showed that the teachers did not use the questionings that appropriately enhances students' mathematical creativity. We suggested that teachers need to be prepared to ask questions such as stimulating students' various mathematical thinking, encouraging many possible responses, and not responding with yes/no. Instead, teachers need to encourage students to explain the reasons of their responses and to take part in learning activities with interest.
