Purpose: The finite element method (FEM) is advantageous because it can save time and cost by reducing the number of samples and experiments in the effort to identify design factors. In computational problem-solving it is necessary that the exact material properties are input for achieving a reliable analysis. However, in the case of fiber boards, it is difficult to measure their cross-directional material properties because of their small thickness. In previous research studies, the Poisson's ratio was measured by analyzing ultrasonic wave velocities. Recently, the Poisson's ratio was measured using a high-speed digital camera. In this study, we measured the transverse strain of a fiber board and calculated its Poisson's ratio using a high-speed digital camera in order to apply these estimates to a FEM analysis of a fiber board, a corrugated board, and a corrugated box. Methods: Three different fiber board samples were used in a uniaxial tensile test. The longitudinal strain was measured using the Universal Testing Machine. The transverse strain was measured using an image processing method. To calculate the transverse strain, we acquired images of the fiber board before the test onset and before the fracture occurred. Acquired images were processed using the image processing program MATLAB. After the images were converted from color to binary, we calculated the width of the fiber board. Results: The calculated Poisson's ratio ranged between 0.2968-0.4425 (Machine direction, MD) and 0.1619-0.1751 (Cross machine direction, CD). Conclusions: This study demonstrates that measurement of the transverse properties of a fiber board is possible using image processing methods. Correspondingly, these processing methods could be used to measure material properties that are difficult to measure using conventional measuring methodologies that employ strain gauge extensometers.

We studied the partial discharge detecting by sensing electromagnetic pulse emitted from the partial discharge source in the stator winding of HV Rotating Machine with UWB sensor. In this study, we designed new type of compact low frequency UWB sensor based on micro-strip technology and made experiments of offline dismantled testing compare with the traditional HFCT as a reference sensor in the laboratory. We investigated internal discharge, surface discharge, corona discharge and non-defected state normal stator on pre-made stator winding by using UWB patch sensor.
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Detachment of the magnetic assembly from the denture base has been a problem in magnetic overdenture patients. PURPOSE: The objectives of this study were to compare the dislodging force by the fixing materials and the designs of the magnetic assembly, and to compare the effect between the fixing materials and the designs of the magnetic assembly. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Two fixing materials, Jet denture repair $acrylic^{(R)}$ and Super-$Bond^{(R)}$ C&$B^{(R)}$ and two types of magnetic assembly designed with or without wing were used. Each magnetic assembly was fixed in the chamber of the denture base resin block ($Lucitone^{(R)}$199) with each fixing material respectively. These specimens were thermocycled 2,000 cycles in the water held at $4^{\circ}C$ and $60^{\circ}C$ with a dwell time of 1 min each time. Each specimen was seated in a testing jig and then a push-out test was performed with a universal testing machine at a cross head speed of 0.5 mm/min to measure the maximum dislodging forces. RESULTS: Comparing the fixing materials, Super-Bond C&$B^{(R)}$ showed superior dislodging force than Jet denture repair $acrylic^{(R)}$. Comparing the design of the magnetic assemblies, the wing design magnetic assembly showed better dislodging force. Combination of the Super-Bond C&$B^{(R)}$ as a fixing material and wing design magnetic assembly revealed a greatest dislodging force. The kind of fixing material was more influential than the type of magnetic assembly. CONCLUSION: The dislodging force of Super-Bond C&$B^{(R)}$ was significantly higher than Jet denture repair $acrylic^{(R)}$. And the dislodging force of magnetic assembly which have wing design was significantly higher than magnetic assembly which have no wing design.
Statement of problem: The proper contact relation between adjacent teeth in each arch plays an important role in the stability and maintenance of the integrity of the dental arches. Proximal contact has been defined as the area of a tooth that is in close association, connection, or touch with an adjacent tooth in the same arch. Purpose: The aim of this study was to develop a digital device for measuring the proximal tooth contact tightness by pulling a thin stainless steel strip (2mm wide, 0.03mm thick) inserted between proximal tooth contact. Material and method: This device consists of measuring part, sensor part, motor part and body part. The stainless steel strip was connected to a stain gauge. The strain gauge was designed to convert the frictional force into a compressive force. This compressive force was detected as a electrical signal and the electrical signal was digitalized by a A/D converter. The digital signals were displayed by a micro-processor. The pulling speed was 8mm/s. Results: For testing reliability of the device in vivo, two healthy young adults (A, B) participated in this experiment. The tightness of proximal tooth contact between the second premolar and the first molar of mandible (subject A) and maxilla (subject B) was measured fifteen times for three days at rest. We double-checked the accuracy of the device with a Universal Testing Machine. Output signals from the Universal Testing Machine and the measuring device were compared. Regression analysis showed high linearity between these two signals. In vivo test, no significant differences were found between measurements. Conclusion: This device has shown to he capable of producing reliable and reproducible results in measuring proximal tooth contact. Therefore, it was considered that this device was appropriate to apply clinically.
INCONEL 718, nickel based superalloy, has good formability, high strength, excellent corrosion resistance and mechanical properties at high temperature. Owing to theses attractive properties, it is utilized in applications such as combustion system, turbine engines and nuclear reactors. In such applications, components are typically required to be tolerant of high stress impact loading. This may cause material degradation and lead to catastrophic failure during service operation. Accurate understanding of material's mechanical properties with various strain rates is required in order to guarantee the reliability of structural parts made of INCONEL 718. This paper is concerned with the dynamic material properties of the INCONEL 718 at various strain rates. The dynamic response of the INCONEL 718 at the intermediate strain rate is obtained from the high speed tensile test and at the high strain rate is from the split Hopkinson pressure bar test. The effect of the strain rate on dynamic flow stress, work hardening characteristics, strain rate sensitivity and elongation to the failure is evaluated with the experimental results. Experimental results from both the quasi-static and the high strain rate up to 5000/sec are interpolated in order to construct the Johnson-Cook model as the constitutive relation that should be applied to simulate and design the structural parts made of rNCONEL 718.
Manufacturing using a 3D printer has recently increased in many fields and the material extrusion method, which is a lamination method, is commonly used. Since it uses a plastic material, the strength of the output of 3D printing is lower than that of steel material. For this reason, research on improving the mechanical properties of the output of 3D printing is continuously being conducted. In this study, tensile strength was compared with changes in the material type (PLA+, ABS) and density (60, 80, and 100%), layer height (0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 mm), layer direction (transverse and lengthwise), and fill pattern (zigzag, honeycomb, and concentric) among 3D printing output conditions. Tensile tests according to 3D printing output conditions were performed using a Universal Testing Machine. The results showed that tensile strength ranged from 21.10 MPa to 43.65 MPa according to the 3D printing output conditions.
The magnetic fibrous polymeric oil filter elements for industrial lub-systems were obtained by pneumoextrusion processing prepared from thermoplastic pqlymer (polyamide) containing a magnetic particulate filler (Ba ferrite), and treated subsequently in a magnetic fields. Using the standard laboratory oil filtration test rig, metallic particle quantifier and image analyser system, the dependence of filtration charateristics of the magnetic filter media on the parameters of porosity and magnetic properties was investigated. The pressure drops and efficiencies of lubricating filter elements were measured on the packing density and magnetised filler content of filter element. Also, the industrial lub-systems such as lubricant filters for gear test rig and electric discharge processing machine were used for testing the flitrational characteristics of tl, c magnetised filter elements. The magnetic fibrous polymeric filter material was shown to possess a highly filtration efficiency in filtering the fine ferrous particles with increasing the magnetic force of filter element. Therefore, it is expected that the magnetic fibrous polymeric filter material should be used for effective oil filrers on the industrial lub-systems.
In order to investigate the effect of the ceramic reinforcements on the wear properties of aluminum bronze composites, Cu-8wt%Al aluminum bronze alloys reinforced with the Saffil alumina short fiber were produced by the powder metallurgical method and tested by a pin-ondisc wear testing machine. The wear surfaces of the pin specimens and discs, wear debris, and the cross sections of the wear specimens were observed by SEM. The wear mechanism according to various wear conditions and the change of microstructure in the composites were also discussed. In the results, the reinforcement of the composites with alumina short fiber was very effective at the higher applied load over 10N. The material transportation to the counter disc was observed in the alloy specimens without reinforcements. However, the composites reinforced with ceramic particles and fibers showed the resistance against the material transportation.
This paper describes a study of the collision of hard steel spheres against aluminium thin circular plates at speeds up to 140 m/s. The tests were monitored by a high speed camera and a chronoscope, which allowed the determination of the ballistic limit and the plate deformation pattern. Quasi-static material parameters were obtained from tests on a universal testing machine and dynamic mechanical characterization of two aluminium alloys were conducted in a split Hopkinson pressure bar. Using a damage model, the perforation of the plates was simulated by finite element analysis. Axisymmetric, shell and solid elements were employed with various parameters of the numerical analysis being thoroughly discussed, in special, the dynamic model parameters. A good agreement between experiments and the numerical analysis was obtained.
In this paper deals with strength of glass fiber reinforced plastics produced by shouting machine was investigated by universal testing instrument. We can obtain following results by performing the strength evaluation of polymer composite material according as varied environment temperature. The effect of environmental temperature on Strength properties was more sensitive in the weld specimen than parent. When changed environmental temperature, variation of strength in the parent was much bigger than it of weld specimen, that is, matrix in the parent, orientation in the specimen ware more sensitive to environmental strength. Tensile strength of polycarbonate matrix was similar regardless of mold temperature.
