This work investigated the material properties of Ni-P-B alloy electrodeposits obtained from a Ni sulfamate bath as a function of the contents of the P and B sources($H_3PO_3$ and dimethyl amine borane complex(DMAB), respectively) with/without additives. Chemical composition, residual stress, microstructure and micro hardness were investigated using ICP(inductively coupled plasma) mass spectrometer, flexible strip, XRD, TEM and micro Vickers hardness tester, respectively. From the results of the compositional analysis, it was observed that P and B are incorporated competitively during the electrodeposition and the sulfur from the additive is codeposited into the electrodeposit. The measured residual stress value increased in the order of Ni, Ni-P, Ni-B and Ni-P-B electrodeposits indicating that boron affects the residual tensile stress greater than phosphorus. As the contents of the alloying element sources of P and B increased, crystallinity and the grain size of the electrodeposit decreased. The effect of boron on crystallinity and grain size was also relatively larger than the phosphorus. It can be explained that the boron with a smaller atomic radius contributes to the increase of residual stress in the tensile direction and the larger restraining force against the grain growth more significantly than the phosphorus with a larger atomic radius. Introduction of an additive into the bath retarded crystallization and grain growth, which may be attributed to the change of the grain growth kinetics induced by the additive adsorbed on the substrate and electrodeposit surfaces during electrodeposition.

This study considers how the fatigue behavior and probabilistic properties of SAE1055 steel are related to its hardness level. SAE1055 steel was heat-treated using induction hardening. Five types of specimens were prepared (A: base material, B: through hardened material with HV390, C: through hardened material with HV510, D: through hardened material with HV700, and E: surface hardened material with HV700). Fatigue tests were performed under a stress ratio of R = -1 using a 4-point rotary bending fatigue tester. The fatigue behaviors were greatly influenced by the hardness, but the fatigue limit did not increase over a hardness of HV510. In addition, the effect of the hardness level on the failure mechanism was evaluated using a scanning electron microscope. The probabilistic properties of the fatigue life were investigated using a probabilistic S-N approach, and the effect of the hardness level on these properties was evaluated using a residue analysis.
The $\beta$ phase Ti-Nb-Sn-HA bio materials were successfully fabricated by high energy mechanical milling and pulse current activated sintering (PCAS). Ti-6Al-4V ELI alloy has been widely used as biomaterial. But the Al has been inducing Alzheimer disease and V is classified as toxic element. In this study, ultra fine sized Ti-Nb-Sn-HA powder was produced by high energy mechanical milling machine. The $\beta$ phase Ti-Nb-Sn-HA powders were obtained after 12hr milling from $\alpha$ phase. And ultra fine grain sized Ti-Nb-Sn-HA composites could be fabricated using PCAS without grain growth. After sintering, the microstructures and phase-transformation of Ti-Nb-Sn-HA biomaterials were analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The relative density was obtained by Archimedes principle and the hardness was measured by Vickers hardness tester. The $\beta$-Ti phase was obtained after 12h milling. As result of hardness and relative density, 12h milled Ti-Nb-Sn-HA composite has the highest values.
Partial or complete prosthesis is needed when teeth are lost due to various kinds of reason. Artificial teeth recover occlusion instead of natural teeth. Artificial teeth are required of esthetics, fragile resistance and abrasive resistance. Artificial tooth is made of acrylic resin or porcelain. Nowadays, acrylic resin artificial teeth are mainly used. Acrylic resin teeth are occluded with natural teeth, gold alloy, Ni-Cr alloy or porcelain etc. Acrylic resin teeth have similar translucency, gloss of natural teeth. And it has good chemical bond with denture base material, but it has low wear resistance. The aim of this study is to compare wear resistance among several denture teeth(Endura, SR-orthosit-PE, Planustar) and between artificial resin denture teeth and opposing 3 restorative materials(gold, Ni-Cr alloy, porcelain). Wear tests were conducted with a rotating wear testing apparatus(pin-on-disk type wear tester) under conditions of rpm 180, 75 minutes and constant loading of 50N. The upper part was the cusp of maxillary first molar and the lower part was a disk type restorative materials. To make similar oral environment, water was supplied continually. The acrylic resin teeth wear was determined by weighing the cusp each 5 minutes during 75 minutes test. Vicker's hardness tester was used to evaluate the surface hardness of test specimens. The SEM was used to evaluate the wear surfaces. The results were as follows: 1. Wear rates of acrylic resin teeth opposing to the restorative materials were high in order of Porcelain, Gold, Ni-Cr alloy (p<.05). 2. Wear resistance rate opposing to the Porcelain disk, was shown in order of Endura, SR-orthosit-PE, Planustar. The wear rate of opposing to porcelain disk was above two times more than that of other groups (p<.05). 3. Wear resistance rates opposing to the Gold, Ni-Cr alloy disk, was shown in order of Endura, SR-orthosit-PE, Planustar (p<.05). 4. A degree of the surface hardness is directly proportional to the degree of wear resistance. There are statistically significant differences between each groups (p<.05).
In this study, combustion characteristics were measured by selecting di-n-buthylamine, which is widely used as an emulsifier, insecticide, additive, rubber vulcanization accelerator, corrosion inhibitor, and raw material for dye production. The flash point of the di-n-buthylamine was measured by Setaflash, Pensky-Martens, Tag, and Cleveland testers. And the AIT of the di-n-buthylamine was measured by ASTM 659E. The explosion limits of the di-n-buthylamine was calculated using the measured flash points by Setaflash tester. The flash point of the di-n-buthylamine by using Setaflash and Pensky-Martens closed-cup testers were experimented at 38 ℃ and 43 ℃, respectively. The flash points of the di-n-buthylamine by Tag and Cleveland open cup testers were experimented at 48 ℃. The AIT of the di-n-buthylamine was experimented at 247 ℃. The LEL and UEL calculated by using lower and upper flash points of Setaflash tester were calculated at 0.69 vol% and 7.7 vol%, respectively. The measurement of the flash point measurement and the calculation method of the explosion limit prediction presented in this study can be used to study the fire and explosion characteristics of the other combustible liquids.

Glass base sealant is required as a ceramic-ceramic joining material between α-alumina insulation cap and β-alumina electrolyte tube in the development of NaS battery cell package for electrical energy storage system. The fabrication of glass frit by thermal quenching method, phase analysis, particle size analysis, coefficient of thermal expansion and surface roughness according to the glass compositions were analyzed for the fabrication of glass sealing paste for ceramic-ceramic joining. Also, a new evaluation method of the adhesion strength of glass sealant at the small area in ceramic-ceramic joining component was proposed using conventional Dage bond tester that was used to measure the adhesion of solder ball joint.
Diamond reinforced Cr-based coating has been proposed as wear-resistant materials. In this study, the friction and wear characteristics of diamond reinforced Cr-based coating are experimentally assessed. The experiments are performed using a pin-on-reciprocating plate tribo-tester under various normal forces with boundary lubrication. The stainless-steel ball is used as a counter material. Prior to the experiments, mechanical properties such as elastic modulus and hardness are determined using nanoscale instrumented indentation. The hardness of the specimen is further determined using a Vickers hardness tester. The specimens before and after the experiments are carefully observed using a confocal microscope to understand the wear characteristics. In addition, the wear volume and wear rate of the specimens are determined based on the confocal microscope data. The results show that the friction coefficients are 0.096-0.100 under 20-40 N normal forces. Furthermore, the wear rates of the diamond reinforced Cr-based coating and the stainless steel ball under 20-40 N normal forces are found to be 12.8 × 10-8 mm3/(Nm)-15.5 × 10-8 mm3/(Nm) and 1.9 × 10-8 mm3/(Nm)-3.9 × 10-8 mm3/(Nm), respectively. However, the effect of the normal force on wear rates is not clearly observed, which may be associated with the flattening of the ball. The results of the study may be useful for the tribological applicability of diamond reinforced Cr-based coating as wear-resistant materials.
The effect of exposure times on the aging characteristics of carbon fiber/epoxy composite ring specimen was evaluated using an accelerating aging tester. Combined exposure conditions, such as temperature, moisture, and ultraviolet, were applied up to 3000 hours. Tensile properties and flexural properties including the effect of curvature were evaluated on the specimens subject to various exposure times through a material testing system. Their aging surfaces were observed through a scanning electron microscope. According to the results, tensile modulus was little affected by the exposure times. However, tensile strength, at the early stage of the exposure times, increased due to physical aging and curing reaction, but tensile strength slightly decreased due to degradation as the exposure times increased. The flexural modulus and flexural strength increased at the early stage of the exposure times, but slightly decreased as the exposure times increased. Aging surfaces of the specimens examined using the scanning electron microscope revealed a different morphology in various exposure times and provided useful information for identifying the degradation in mechanical properties of the composite subject to various exposure times.

This study applies various surface patterns to minimize material loss in construction equipment that is subject to severe wear due to sand, such as the wear-resistant steel plates of dump trucks or the teeth of excavators. The relationship between surface morphology and wear behavior is investigated using PLA+ polymer to observe the effect of the surface pattern. Five types of samples - smooth, concave, convex, wavy concave, and wavy convex designs - are created using a 3D printer. A wear experiment is conducted for a duration of 3 h using 6.5 kg of abrasive particles. The mass loss of the samples after the experiment is measured to assess the extent of wear. Additionally, the surface morphology of the samples before and after the experiment is analyzed using SEM and confocal microscopy. The study results reveal that the smooth design exhibits the highest wear loss, whereas the concave and wavy concave designs show relatively lower wear loss. The convex and wavy convex designs exhibit varying contact areas with the abrasive particles depending on the surface pattern, resulting in different levels of wear. Furthermore, a comparison between the experimental results and DEM simulations confirms the observed wear trends. This study reveals the relationship between wear damage according to surface pattern shape and is expected to be of substantial help in the analysis of wear and tear on agricultural and heavy equipment.

The sliding wear behaviors of three different compositions of novel low temperature degradation-free zirconia/alumina (LTD-free Z/A) composites were examined in a ceramic-ceramic contact pair. The wear tests were performed by using a pin-on-disk type wear tester in a linear reciprocal sliding motion with a line contact in both dry and bovine serum lubricated conditions at room temperature. From the results of dry sliding wear tests, Z/A#1((5.3Y, 4.6Nb)-TZP/80 $vol\%Al_2O_3$) showed the best wear resistance among three kinds of LTD-free Z/A composites. For the bovine serum lubricated sliding wear tests, wear was too little to be measured for all kinds of Z/A composites. These novel LTD-free Z/A composites having excellent wear resistance demonstrated a potential as the alternative materials for the ceramic-ceramic contact pairs of femoral head and acetabular liner in total hip replacement.
