  • Solar energy conversion to hydrogen was carried out via a two-step thermochemical water splitting using metal oxide redox pair. To simulate the solar radiation, a 7 kW short arc Xe-lamp was used. Partially reduced iron oxide and cerium oxide have the water splitting ability, respectively. So, $Fe_3O_4$ supported on $CeO_2$ was selected as the active material. $Fe_3O_4/CeO_2$(20 wt/80 wt%) was prepared by impregnation method, then the active material was washcoated on the ceramic honeycomb monolith made of mullite and cordierite. Oxygen was released at the reduction step($1673{\sim}1823\;K$) and hydrogen was produced from water at lower temperature($873{\sim}1273\;K$). The result demonstrate the possibility of the 2-step thermochemical water splitting hydrogen production by the active material washcoated monolith. And hydrogen and oxygen was produced separately without any separation process in a monolith installed reactor. But the SEM and EDX analysis results revealed that the support used in this experiment is not suitable due to the thermal instability and coating material migration.

  • The antimicrobial and antioxidative effect of polyphenols (PP) was proved from pine needle. This method which was seperated and purified of PP used pine needle powder as the material and assorted the solvent and then it was added the 7 times (w/v) of the material. It was extracted at 85$^{\circ}C$ for 6 hours and was passed the column to fill with formamide-active carbon (1:1, w/v). It was concentrated and dried by sprayer, added n-hexane as the flood adding material in this powder, was extracted far 1 hrs. The each sample was obtained after removing the fat component then dried. The effect of extraction solvent among the hot water, ethyl alcohol (EtOH, isopropyl alcohol (IPA) was determined depending on the yield and the purity. The relationship between the yield and purity showed the positively inverse proportion and the extinction solvent was selected as the utilization of seperation material. As the method of seperation and purification of PP was accomplished, in order to use of the new subject matter the purity enhance is expected. The application of the new subject matter as the raw material of flood needs to examine actively except the functional properties of anticancerous, antimicrobial, antioxidative, antiallergic.

  • Hexadecane and exfoliated graphite nanoplate (xGnP)composite was prepared as a shape-stabilized phase change material (SSPCM) in a vacuum to develope thermal energy storage. The Hexadecane as an organic phase change material (PCM) is very stable against phase separation of PCM and has a melting point at $18^{\circ}C$ that is under the thermally comfortable temperature range in buildings. The xGnP is a porous carbon nanotube material with high thermal conductivity. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Fourier transformation infrared spectrophotometer (FT-IR)were used to confirm the chemical and physical stability of Hexadecane/xGnP SSPCM. In addition, thermal properties were determined by Deferential scanning calorimeter(DSC) and Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The specific heat of Hexadecane/xGnPSSPCM was $10.0J/g{\cdot}K$ at $21.8^{\circ}C$. The melting temperature range of melting and freezing were found to be $16-25^{\circ}C$ and $17-12^{\circ}C$. At this time, the laten heats of melting and freezing were 96.4J/g and 94.8J/g. The Hexadecane was impregnated into xGnP as much about 48.8% of Hexadecane/xGnP SSPCM's mass fraction.

  • Construction is like a symbol of social development. Buildings and public infrastructures are required to support people's lives and a country's development. With the increasing construction, the waste of construction increases as well. Demolition wastes from existing buildings or urban renewal plans also increase the waste quantity. Construction and demolition wastes (CDW) are majorly inorganic materials and have high recycling potential. However, the recycling rate of CDW is not 100% and needs more methods to raise the rate. In Taiwan, the CDW has two authorities, one is CDW waste managed by the Ministry of Environment (MoE), and the other is construction spoil soils managed by the National Land Management Agency, Ministry of Interior. In 2022, the CDW waste is 2.12 million tons, and construction spoil soils are around 43 million m3. In this study, the current status of CDW in Taiwan was reviewed and material flow analysis was applied to link the materials sources to CDW. The results showed that 35% of waste concrete flowed back to the source materials and 65% was disposed of or used as secondary materials. However, 95% of waste steel was used back as raw materials and only 5% was disposed of or used in other materials. To increase the recycling of CDW, the priority method is to force the material separation onsite. Mixing CDW would increase the cost of recycling and decrease the market competition ability. New technology to collect and recycle the CDW as a new material is also recommended. Finally, a new law, the Resources Recycling Promotion Law, is coming in this year, 2024, which is expected to turn the waste into resources in Taiwan.

  • Nowadays a large amount of wastewater containing metal working fluids and cleaning agents is generated during the cleaning process of parts working in various industries of automobile, machine and metal, and electronics etc. In this study, aqueous or semi-aqueous cleaning wastewater contaminated with soluble or nonsoluble oils was treated using ultrafiltration system. And the membrane permeability flux and performance of oil-water separation (or COD removal efficiency) of the ultrafiltration system employing PAN as its membrane material were measured at various operating conditions with change of membrane pore sizes and soil concentrations of wastewater and examined their suitability for wastewater treatment contaminated with soluble or insoluble oil. As a result, in case of wastewater contaminated with soluble oil and aqueous or semi-aqueous cleaning agent, the membrane permeability increased rapidly even though COD removal efficiency was almost constant as 90 or 95% as the membrane pore size increased from 10 kDa to 100 kDa. However, in case of the wastewater contaminated with nonsoluble oil and aqueous or semi-aqueous cleaning agent, as the membrane pore size increased from 10 kDa to 100 kDa and the soil concentration of wastewater increased, the membrane permeability was reduced rapidly while COD removal efficiency was almost constant. These phenomena explain that since the membrane material is hydrophilic PAN material, it blocks nonsoluble oil and reduces membrane permeability. Thus, it can be concluded that the aqueous or semi-aqueous cleaning solution contaminated with soluble oil can be treated by ultrafiltration system with the membrane of PAN material and its pore size of 100 kDa. Based on these basic experimental results, a pilot plant facility of ultrafiltration system with PAN material and 100 kDa pore size was designed, installed and operated in order to treat and recycle alkaline cleaning solution contaminated with deep drawing oil. As a result of its field application, the ultrafiltration system was able to separate aqueous cleaning solution and soluble oil effectively, and recycle them. Further more, it can increase life span of aqueous cleaning solution 12 times compared with the previous process.

  • In the present work, a new separation system with rotating rakes has been developed to separate the film-based plastics from the recyclable materials, and environment assessment is also carried out during operation of the device. Capacity of the device was about 5.3 ton/hr at a rakes rotation speed of 26.0 rpm (the number of rakes in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd trials were 39, 52 and 48, respectively) and a belt conveyor speed of 38.5m/min, which satisfied the initial design capacity (5.0 ton/hr). Recovery ratio and purity of the plastic films were 92.6% and 96.5%, respectively at a rotation speed of 28 rpm. The levels of noise, vibration and particulate emission were below material standard regulatory limits. Plastic refused fuel (RPF) was also prepared with the recovered films. The calorific value and chlorine content of the prepared RPF were 9,740 kcal/kg and 0.18%, respectively which satisfy the first grade quality specification of the Korean RPF standard. As a result of this work, recovery of energy resources from the municipal solid waste is possible by adopting the developed separation device.

  • Polymers are widely used as membrane material for performing the separation of various gaseous mixtures due to their attractive permselective properties and high processability. The separation characteristics of $CH_4$ and $CO_2$ mixed gas using polyamide composite membrane has been studied in this work. The sample gas was prepared by mixing pure methane and carbon dioxide. Permeation tests were carried out at different operation conditions. Feed flow rates were varied between 800~1000 $cm^3/min$, and the stage cuts were varied between 50~60%. The gas inlet pressure and the temperature were varied as 6 bar and $30{\sim}70^{\circ}C$, respectively. The effects of the above mentioned parameters were investigated to estimate the permeability of $CH_4$ and $CO_2$, and the selectivity of $CO_2$ was also calculated for all conditions. The Arrhenius plots were also performed to obtaine the activation energies of $CH_4$ and $CO_2$ permeabilities.

  • A study has been carried out on the extraction chromatographic separation of fission products from spent pressurized water reactor (PWR) fuels for inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometric analysis. Impregnation capacity of tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP), which is well known as an extractant in the field of uranium separation from various nuclear grade materials, on Amberlite XAD polymeric macroporous support materials was measured. Amberlite XAD-16 of which the surface area is the highest was selected as a support material because its TBP impregnation capacity was the largest in Amberlite XADs. Sorption behaviour of this TBP impregnated resin was investigated for the fission product elements using acidic solutions simulated for dissolver solutions of spent PWR fuels. The parameters affecting the performance of the separation system were optimized. The fission product elements studied excluding Pd and Ru were quantitatively recovered with the precision of less than 3.1%.

  • This study is aimed to design a membrane process that systematically removes contaminants including microplastics in sun-dried salt using a separation membrane. In this study, we selected the separation membrane material, pore size, and module suitable for the sun-dried salt fields, and proceeded with the experiments under the salt fields and laboratory conditions. A pilot plant was constructed and tested in our lab and in the actual saltern with the selected 200 kDa, 4 kDa ultrafiltration membranes, and 3 kDa nanofiltration membranes. Most of the impurities in the sea salt were 0.1 ㎛ in size, and more than 7 types of various microplastics were detected in the impurities. After that, as a result of checking the filtered water through the separation membrane process, no impurities were detected. As a result of comparing the existing sea salt component and the sea salt component prepared with separation membrane filtrate, impurities were effectively removed without change in the sea salt component.

  • This research article explores the application of Polymer of Intrinsic Microporosity (PIM-1) as a cutting-edge material for CO2 gas separation membranes in response to the escalating global concern over climate change and the imperative to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The study delves into the synthesis, molecular weight control, and fabrication of PIM-1 membranes, providing comprehensive insights through various characterization techniques. The intrinsic microporosity of PIM-1, arising from its unique crosslinked and rigid structure, is harnessed for selective gas permeation, particularly of carbon dioxide. The article emphasizes the tunable chemical properties of PIM-1, allowing for customization and optimization of gas separation membranes. By controlling the molecular weight, higher molecular weight (H-PIM-1) membranes are demonstrated to exhibit superior CO2 permeability and selectivity compared to lower molecular weight counterparts (L-PIM-1). The study's findings highlight the critical role of molecular weight in tailoring PIM-1 membrane properties, contributing to the advancement of next-generation membrane technologies for efficient and selective CO2 capture-an essential step in addressing the pressing global challenge of climate change.
